Corner kitchen cupboard

About to move into a new home and planning what's going to go where in the kitchen. Anyone have a good solution for the rubbish corner cupboards that you can only access half of? I want to get one of those fitted pull out units but DH says they are really expensive and result in only being able to fit half as much stuff in anyway. He wants to get a couple of large plastic boxes to store stuff in so that you can pull the whole box out of one side to get to the other side - I say that's easy to say when you don't do the cooking 😅

Any novel ideas?

My kitchen is tiny and very awkward and I don't have the money to really sort it.
At the moment we have storage boxes in the hard to reach part but I couldn't tell you what is in them as my arthritic back, legs and hands mean I find it very difficult to pull everything out.

We need new units after a leak.
My proposed solution is to have a double unit to house the sink, then the dishwasher then a single unit with either drawers or shelves.

In between the cupboard and the cooker I would get a unit on wheels, either a butcher block or a smaller larder type.
This could be pulled out when I need to access the corner cupboard.
For example pull out trolley

What do people think, is this an effective solution?

Wow, loads of replies - thanks everyone!!

Looks like carousels are actually the most popular, with double hinged doors a close second (issue with this is whether we can match the cabinets). I will have to see what I can find.

I literally agonised over this for months when planning my new kitchen.

I can't stand carousels so in my corner base cupboard I did find a box that fits on each shelf - one has all the party stuff in, bowls, plates, coloured and Christmas napkins, balloons, party banners, bbq utensils, serving platters etc. The other has other infrequently used kitchenalia that gets used infrequently so it's not a hassle to pull out, eg waffle irons, giant mixing bowl for Xmas cakes and industrial baking sessions, cake stands etc.

Frees up space from elsewhere, means I can get to the everyday stuff without lugging the whole thing out on a carousel.

We have a horrible kitchen in the house we rent (and no chance of landlords changing it!) there are no wall cupboards or shelves and the bottom range of cupboards are terrible. The room is rectangular with kitchen door to hallway in one corner and the doorway to dining room next to it on wall at right angles (so both in 1 corner of the room). The rest of the kitchen has worktop from doorway to doorway with low cupboards including double width ones in the 3 corners but, as they go back towards the corner and alongside the cupboard they’re at right angles to, they only have a single door on them and 1/2 the shelves are unreachable for every day bits & pieces.

I really struggle with things like cans, dry goods etc so 1/4 of the worktops have things like a veg rack, a can tidy (designed to go in a cupboard really) and a bookcase is utilised as shelves for condiments, spices and extras. It all makes the kitchen look incredibly cluttered and very small.

Climbie · 27/11/2022 14:38

Not sure from your OP what type of corner cupboards you have. The symmetrical ones I think are better with offset shelves or even just normal shelves, the one sided ones I think the magic corner things are worth it.

It depends how much other space you have in your kitchen. We had a one sided one with only a 50cm door and I needed somewhere to put rarely used casserole dishes etc so that was fine. I just kept a stack of baking sheets and a stack of saucepans in the accessible bit, both easy to pull out, and that worked really well. Carousels etc are better if you don't have better places to put your most used items.

We've just down our kitchen, and in one corner we have a full height corner larder.... it's huge and fits so much stuff.

I can't stand corner cupboards such a waste of space. But the corner larder is amazing!

I keep thinking of doing this. Could I ask what are the doors like? Are they the same as the corner cabinet (right angle) or is it on a diagonal. Hope that makes sense.

Flossflower · 27/11/2022 15:01

I had my kitchen done last summer. I knew I would have problems with corner units and I really didn’t want a carousel as they waste so much space.
My solution is to put the things in 3 inch deep trays. The length of the tray is the same as the width of the unit. (I think these are cat litter trays!) I store 3 trays side by side along the unit. When I want something from one of the back trays I only have to move the other 2 trays out. Obviously in the back trays I put the things I don’t use so much. I also keep a list in the cupboard of what is in the back trays. This is for the top shelf. For the bottom shelf I have a similar system except I use 2 plastic storage boxes. The one at the back is on wheels.
This does sound quite complicated but it works very well for me.

Delilah1234 · 27/11/2022 08:31

I second this, but we have a curved door and shelves, I’ve had carousels and ‘manic corners’ and this is by far the best in terms of space utilisation and access.

@Delilah1234 a manic corner sounds like what I have now!! 🤣

yes the curved door does make it look smoother/tidier!

I just hate curved corners on anything, I'm a very right angles type person!

they look nice in other peoples kitchens though!

Double hinged door and offset straight shelves. I've bored on about this before but we built it in our last kitchen and it was great. Somehow with the shallow shelves you can just see and reach everything better.
Second best IME is a straight corner with a magic corner version that pulls right out like this hafele

@NotMeNoNo I think im going to get hinged door like on your white photo, with offset shelves like your wooden unit.

@FatFilledTrottyPuss and in the other corner, a unit similar the one in your post, but the doors hinged and going into the corner not across it!!

I don't like things going across the corner AND I know I'd put things on the floor if the door did that 🤣🤣I'd hate myself for it, but I know it would happen!!

Oblomov22 · 27/11/2022 16:23

Interesting. I have one like Whee.
Herbs and spices on the top. Oils and vinegars on the bottom, behind them is the slow cooker and blender.

Dox9 · 27/11/2022 16:34

We have same as @NotMeNoNo white kitchen. It is from ikea, not expensive and works extremely well. I have all my dry cupboard foods in there. There's a bit of dead space in the corners but I use it for my tall vases that are a pain to store elsewhere.

inigomontoyahwillcox · 27/11/2022 16:41

We just had this problem in our new kitchen as the only corner cupboard that fitted one corner didn't come with a carousel., and the carousels I found online didn't come in the size I needed (the door is only 25cm across).

After much research I found the cheapest and easiest solution was to buy 2 baskets (per shelf); one larger one, which was the size of the hidden area, and one smaller one which was the size of the door/accessible area. When I want to get something out of the hidden basket I just pull the smaller one out and pull the hidden one over. It isn't perfect, as even when the hidden basket is pulled over you only have access to half of it and have to reach your arm in a little - but it's much better than not having them.

I've done a diagram :)

I didn’t think I’d like the doors going across the corner but it’s worth it as the cupboard is so spacious. I’ll admin to putting things on the floor though. It’s a good thing, you can hide a multitude of sins in there Grin

princesssparklepants · 27/11/2022 21:40

@Rummikub the door is on the diagonal. Will try find a snap of our floor plan

princesssparklepants · 27/11/2022 21:42

Hope photo has attached

We really love it.... as does DD... she likes to hide in it lol

We have a carousel cupboard and it really is a pain. Things fall off and you can't get to them and there really isn't a huge amount of storage on them tbh. When we get around to doing our kitchen and should we have any corner cupboards I want to have something like these www.amazon.co.uk/Close-Magic-Corner-Storage-System/dp/B00MBWJABK/ref=asc_df_B00MBWJABK/?tag=googshopuk-21&linkCode=df0&hvadid=344304724068&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=1887880109100207819&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=1007044&hvtargid=pla-351827448894&psc=1

@FatFilledTrottyPuss

i know myself too well! There would be an ever growing pile of crap & that would get in the way of the shelves.

other than the 'floor of doom' it doesn't make any difference if you have the door across or hinged so it folds into the shelves. Non floor storage is exactly the same 😊

Rummikub · 28/11/2022 01:07

@princesssparklepants

thank you for the plan. That’s exactly the sort of thing I’m after.
Do you have a worktop inside?

WhyWhyWhyMum · 28/11/2022 01:11

We have this from Wickes

I saw a simple idea, 2 doors opened out. Top shelf was half the dept of cupboard. This allowed you to see all of lower part of cupboard. Thought it would be ideal for storing pots and pans with casserole type things on top shelf. Hope I explained that clearly. The back board was bent so there was no corner at the back. Made it easier to keep clean.

No, no work top.. it's got about 4/5 shelves in from top to bottom.

The kitchen is from wren and they do have them instore so you can see how big they are

Jyn · 29/11/2022 22:55

Im in the hate camp. Sorry

Had a double one at the old house. It took up valuable space in what was already a small kitchen and became the cupboard where stuff you didn’t use got shoved. Things invariably ended up piled around it so it eventually didn’t turn at all. Hated it with a passion.
Main stipulation in the new house when designed the kitchen was a hinged double door, but full shelves. I find them so much better.

I know what I’m doing over the weekend! There’s a wren showroom not too far away.
