I am mortified

Utterly and completely. And embarrassed.

At a petrol station earlier, returning to the car after paying for fuel, and I went flying. And when I say flying, I mean flying. I didn't stumble or trip, I flew.

And I couldn't have picked a more conspicuous spot to do it if I'd tried. It was a service station garage so a big and busy one.

Honestly, I am completely thrown beyond all proportion by this. It just made me feel old and stupid and pathetic :(.

Everyone’s done it op. Brew

ZeroFucksGivenToday · 26/11/2022 15:13

Oh lovely. It's horrible isn't it?

a few years ago, at blackpool seafront with my then 7 year old. In front of the concrete seating, just after the high school had kicked out. I told my daughter to watch the kerb, the same kerb I flew over, did a slow motion roll and splatted on my back. I just wanted to die on the spot!
In fairness a few of the teens did ask if I was ok. My daughter was laughing her head off 🤦‍♀️. It's so bloody awful isn't it. I played it over and over in my head so many times. :(

ProperVexed · 26/11/2022 15:14

As a teenager ( over 40 years ago) I was on a sixth form coach trip to the theatre. We stopped at a motorway service station. My friends got off the coach and were waiting for me. As I walked down the three steps to exit the coach my heel got caught in the hem of my skirt. I went flying out of the door and landed on my knees, with my face kissing the pavement like the pope.
I was mortified then, as a young person, and obviously still remember it in detail to this day.
At least you fell with style, OP!

Mortifive · 26/11/2022 15:16

Thank you so much for sharing falls with me, it's made me laugh (with you not at you) and feel less embarrassed. I can't unsee the line of cars who's drivers and passengers had a front seat view. I suppose I should be grateful no one started hooting horns!

I think getting hurt physically makes many of us emotional. The immediate feelings that I experience if I fall or get hurt aren’t logical. I think it will pass soon.

CellarBellaatemycoal · 26/11/2022 15:06

If you really were old you’d be saying you ‘had a fall’. There’s a distinct line between being young (fell over) and being old (had a fall). Given that you FLEW I reckon you’ve still got it going on. Life in the old dog yet.

I definitely flew not fell so I must still be young! It's almost like I dived, very puzzling.

This is true unname - I did real ugly crying once safely back in the car, and I haven't done that in ages.

I walked smack bang into a huge glass window in a packed restaurant during the summer. The whole place went silent. I just wanted to run away too but was there with lots of friends. Definitely know how you feel.

Nishky32 · 26/11/2022 15:25

Years ago I had a job that involved appearing in court. I have fallen over in court - twice

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 26/11/2022 15:26

Are you ok?

Snoooozzze · 26/11/2022 15:28

Hope you're ok OP!

We've all been there! It is inexplicably mortifying isn't it!

I went out one time as a young'un and had put black tights on under my dress with a pair of knickers over them (a tip from my mum and it was the 90s when I was a teen! This is relevant I promise!)anyway, I was dancing and walking towards my friends and my heel caught on something slippery and I ski-ed on my heel until landing on my back with my dress entirely up over my head! All the local boys saw my knickers over tights combo and I was cringing so hard and red faced for the rest of the night! Mortifying!

bpirockin · 26/11/2022 15:34

I once bumped my car with my backside as I bent over to pick up a dropped letter, and went flying into the road. Being disabled, the only way for me to get yup was to bum walk myself to the pavement and roll to one side. A guy in a waiting van said "Get out the way you fat cow!" as I moved towards the pavement. Only my pride was hurt but I posted the letter and got back in the car and cried all the way home. I believe that it's shock more than anything, and felt lucky not to have flown into the path of an oncoming vehicle, but oh, that comment stayed with me just as much. I have a few 'falls' I could relay, but none with such style as Cilla's - wow!

I hope you're feeling less shaken now.

nopuppiesallowed · 26/11/2022 15:39

I think Naomi Campbell fell off the catwalk at a fashion show and Ian Dale fell off the stage and into the orchestra pit. They are not old - and neither are you! Big hugs......

Kindthoughts · 26/11/2022 15:42

I'm glad there was someone to help.
I fell when pregnant with baby number 3.
We were at a Children's Farm and I slipped on the muddy car park. Fell on my back (baby was fine thankfully) and broke my elbow.
No-one came to help (but I did have a full audience), including my now ex partner (children's father) who snarled at me to "Get the fuck up! You're embarrassing me!".
I was just glad baby was fine.

I did this a few weeks ago, tripped on a paving stone , loads of people around, I went down like a felled tree. I lay on the pavement for a bit in shock and nobody asked if I was Ok . Then DH appeared out of the shop and helped me up and I cried. I felt a total fool ! I had really hurt my knee and had dirt all over my face.
I then limped off to the car and sat there having another little cry.
I am in my fifties.

Norachance · 26/11/2022 15:43

I bought this birthday card earlier for someone...

I am mortified
Sandunesandseashells · 26/11/2022 15:46

Not a fall but the same embarrassment ensued: When I was 8 months pregnant, I bent my knees to get something from the bottom shelf in WHSmith and then realised my knees weren’t strong enough to push me up again.
I looked around and whimpered “Please help, I’m stuck!” The whole queue just stared at me. “Could someone help? I can’t get up” No one did - so I kneeled on the floor and then shimmied sideways and pulled myself up on the display case one knee then one foot at a time in front of the ignorant audience queue and slunk out of the door.

Just to make you feel better.
Christmas a few years ago.
York city centre, packed to the gills.
I'd got a new black wool coat for xmas, it was a beast.
Felt like a concrete overcoat, weighed a tonne.
Walked up to the top of a hill, through the crowds.
I fell.
The coat overcame me, I went down like a sack of spuds.
But.
I rolled.
I started slowly, just capsized, built up momentum and rolled.
Down the hill, people scattering left and right, a huge black boulder thundering down like Indiana Jones.
All the way back down the hill, chicaned on some railings, round the corner and finally stopped at the feet of a Chinese tour group.
Purple faced and I'd pissed a bit.
The shame.

That made me laugh so much! Please tell me it was Clifford's Tower?

Sandunesandseashells · 26/11/2022 15:48

@Kindthoughts It must be something about pregnancy that scares people!

BobbyBobbyBobby · 26/11/2022 15:52

Hope you’re ok.

Youve probably made it to the garages compilation tape of people falling over, putting the wrong fuel in and parking on the wrong side to fill their tank etc. Think of if it as your being entertaining.

IhearyouClemFandango · 26/11/2022 15:52

I did it at 18, walking into a pub on NYE. Tripped on the doorway going in, straight onto both knees.

And then fell out of a minibus taxi on the way to a show once, again landing on both knees.

It's a huge shock for sure x

Ravageur · 26/11/2022 16:00

I'm a nightmare always tripping over my own feet. I was in Byron burger once and my heel just skidded under me and I ended up in some blokes lap!! Oh dear haha everyone laughed and kept looking over at me even after I'd sat down at my table. The poor bloke bless him got more of me shoved in his face than he was expecting 😊

In my classroom I had warned anyone out the their seat to be carful of the overhead projector cable, you'll guess where this is going. I went absolutely full length, felt a total idiot and I've never heard my Yr 11 so silent, I would have expected much laughter! When I'd got my self up one pupil even told me to go and sit down, she'd make me a coffee in our little kitchen area and was annoyed when I said No to lots of sugar, for shock!

I’m always falling over OP, I can trip
over dust lol, don’t sweat it. What pisses me off though is that no one comes to my aid, perhaps that doesn’t happen until we are a lot older? Hope you haven’t hurt yourself too badly.

I, too, can trip over dust - or the pattern n the carpet if available. I hate it when people try and help me. Please, please ignore me.

Hope you’re OK @Mortifive and all that’s really hurt is your pride.

MrsClatterbuck · 26/11/2022 16:07

I have fell a few times and it is mortifying. I once fell off my chair at work. The whole floor went silent about 60 odd people. Think some of them thought I had died. Only thing hurt was my pride.
I fell early this year and broke my foot plus the pain in my side was horrendous. Turning over in bed was extremely painful. It did take a lot out of me tbh. Hopefully you are not hurt.
I fell outside my house and there wasn't anybody around. Not sure if that was a good thing or bad.
