I am mortified

Mortifive · 26/11/2022 14:40

Utterly and completely. And embarrassed.

At a petrol station earlier, returning to the car after paying for fuel, and I went flying. And when I say flying, I mean flying. I didn't stumble or trip, I flew.

And I couldn't have picked a more conspicuous spot to do it if I'd tried. It was a service station garage so a big and busy one.

Honestly, I am completely thrown beyond all proportion by this. It just made me feel old and stupid and pathetic :(.

Poor you! I don't understand why you're mortified though, it can happen to anyone. If I saw an incident like that all I would want to do is help the person.

afaloren · 26/11/2022 14:45

Oh no! Are you hurt?

FOJN · 26/11/2022 14:47

Why are you mortified? People trip or fall all the time, it can happen to anyone. I hope someone bothered to check you were OK.

You will think about this for far longer than anyone who saw it. I don't mean this unkindly but you're really not that important to randoms at the petrol station.

HowzAboutIt · 26/11/2022 14:48

How?

Mortifive · 26/11/2022 14:48

I don't really understand why I'm so mortified either but I am. I actually went home instead of going where I was meant to go :(.

I hurt my hands and knees, and somehow managed to get my lipstick all over my face! Thank

Nothing to be mortified about it was an accident and people would have just been concerned you were ok.

I flew down a set of concrete stairs at an airport once. I got up and just kept walking until I got into the airport and sat down right at the doorway clearly in shock. Someone who had seen what happened asked if I was ok.
Nothing to be embarrassed about

Mortifive · 26/11/2022 14:51

FOJN I know, you are 100% right. But it's upset me. I think it's because I've been feeling lately that I'm aging, and somehow this has fed into a useless older woman narrative I have going on in my head!

OP posts:
Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 26/11/2022 14:51

Aw what a shame. Yes it's the fight or flight thing I think.
I remember thinking I looked great, I had a new tartan poncho on and just looked really well put together then I fell. One of the buttons on my poncho ripped off and I had cuts on my hand and my jeans were torn.
I called my mum crying when I got to the airport lounge. It's horrible to fall as we just don't fall so we arent used to it and aren't used to pain.

Be kind to yourself and hope you feel better soon

20viona · 26/11/2022 14:52

You are never gonna see anyone that saw you fall again! Forget it!

OnTheRunWithMannyMontana · 26/11/2022 14:52

To be fair I would feel exactly the same so it's not just you. Even as a younger woman I would want a hole to open up and swallow me!

Hope you have got over the trauma and aren't as shaken up now. It happens to us all.

Mortifive · 26/11/2022 14:53

Thank you for the kindness. There was a lovely lady who came to help - I heard her gasp "oh no!" as I hit the ground!

@Hungrycaterpillarsmummy I'm sorry about your poncho and I bet you did look great in it!

I’m always falling over OP, I can trip
over dust lol, don’t sweat it. What pisses me off though is that no one comes to my aid, perhaps that doesn’t happen until we are a lot older? Hope you haven’t hurt yourself too badly.

OnTheRunWithMannyMontana · 26/11/2022 14:53

Just read that back and wanted to clarify.... I'm not suggesting you are old 😂😂

What I meant was that WHEN I was a younger woman I would have also felt mortified. I'm definitely not a younger woman now 😂

Cocopogo · 26/11/2022 14:56

I know how you feel. I went flying about a month ago outside Starbucks so lots of people saw and some passing person tried to help me up. I just felt awful. Still makes me shudder thinking about it now. It’s silly really and if it happened to someone else I wouldn’t give it a second thought but I can’t shake the feeling.

Mortifive · 26/11/2022 14:58

@OnTheRunWithMannyMontana I had a birthday last week - definitely on the wrong side of young!

I had to ring my ds who I was on the way to see. He was worried for me but didn't get it at all and was doing the "do you know how many times I've fallen" speech. It does seem ludicrous how pathetic it made me feel but I'm grateful for the niceness on here so thank you :).

Just to make you feel better.
Christmas a few years ago.
York city centre, packed to the gills.
I'd got a new black wool coat for xmas, it was a beast.
Felt like a concrete overcoat, weighed a tonne.
Walked up to the top of a hill, through the crowds.
I fell.
The coat overcame me, I went down like a sack of spuds.
But.
I rolled.
I started slowly, just capsized, built up momentum and rolled.
Down the hill, people scattering left and right, a huge black boulder thundering down like Indiana Jones.
All the way back down the hill, chicaned on some railings, round the corner and finally stopped at the feet of a Chinese tour group.
Purple faced and I'd pissed a bit.
The shame.

Mortifive · 26/11/2022 15:02

Oh Cilla! That has made me cry laughing! I'm so sorry. Did you hurt yourself? Did people take photos? Will you ever go back to York? (My advice would be - don't!)

OP posts:
Threadkillacilla · 26/11/2022 15:04

I think the steam coming off me obscured the pictures, the tour group thought I was a turn.
Never been back, dead to me is bloody York and it's festivities.

Beamur · 26/11/2022 15:05

Bless you OP and all the other people (including me) who have fallen over in public. It's weirdly embarrassing.
I fell over quite spectacularly in front of friends. Years later one of them still laughs about it!
Dust yourself down, put a cold flannel on your grazes and have a hot drink. Hope you feel better soon.

BeautifulWar · 26/11/2022 15:05

Oh no, poor you!

It could happen to anyone. I once fell over spectacularly when my heel (this was some years ago!) got caught in my turn up trousers. Mortifying.

I hope you're not too badly hurt. It's the hurt pride that often stings the most.

CellarBellaatemycoal · 26/11/2022 15:06

If you really were old you’d be saying you ‘had a fall’. There’s a distinct line between being young (fell over) and being old (had a fall). Given that you FLEW I reckon you’ve still got it going on. Life in the old dog yet.

And that’s how you do it in style lol

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 26/11/2022 15:07

I slipped on some liquid in my high heels and fell in the middle of a restaurant between some tables. I didn’t want to get up. Everyone was looking, i was sooooo embarrassed. I still think about it today. Awful.

FluffySocks0 · 26/11/2022 15:11

This happened to me a few years ago and I still cringe when I think about it. I was walking down a busy high street and I went flying, scraped up my hands and knees Infront of loads of people.

But I try to think how I'd feel if I saw that happen to someone else and I'd just be concerned with whether they were ok, I wouldn't laugh at them or judge them because it could happen to anyone. I hope you're ok now 💐
