Best thing to stop a cold in its tracks.

I know I know that bed rest is the best thing but this time of year is the all hands on deck/must have a voice/haven’t got capacity to be sick time for my job. I have that tickly/feel like a swallow a lump/sinus clarity of head that premeditates a cold for me. I need to take something that will stop it in its tracks… something that will keep me going all day but knock me out at night - what is your go to medicines?
Please no lectures about working - it’s just not possible at this time of year - it’s either working and feeling miserable or working and taking something to keep me going. I will be covid testing and wearing a mask. Other times of the year I have a much better work/life balance.

Whiskey.
Sudafed, paracetamol, high dose vitamin C, zinc. Garlic/hot curry.

SomeChickensAreJustTooBig · 25/11/2022 23:36

A hot toddy right before sleep worked for me once.
or just strong cold/flu tablets and coffee.

AlwaysFullOfQuestions22 · 25/11/2022 23:38

Cold / flu tablets taken regularly , drink hot lemon water , that's what works for me.

Tulipvase · 25/11/2022 23:40

A friend swears by echinacea

JaneJeffer · 25/11/2022 23:42

Antiseptic throat spray

Midnight00 · 25/11/2022 23:44

Vicks First Defence spray - you can't believe how effective it is until you use it

crazeecatladee · 25/11/2022 23:44

I swear by echinacea too. It takes away that shitty feeling and reduces symptoms. I could go to work (teacher) and get through the day feeling relatively normal.

Iknownothing · 25/11/2022 23:45

Thank you - will pop into boots tomorrow..

I read on here someone put a couple drops of hydrogen peroxide in both ears and their cold disappeared within a day or 2.

SchoolSurvey · 25/11/2022 23:47

Sudafed Max strength for sinuses. Covonia throat spray (chlorhexidine). Lots of warm drinks (I keep getting colds/sore throats and enjoy peach fruit tea with some nice honey in it in a travel mug and keep sipping). Bed rest as much as practicable. Warm baths. Hot/micro wheaty bags for comfort.

Good luck!

Vicks First Defence nasal spray! I swear by it.

I also just wanted to say that I switched to a Keto diet 2.5yrs ago and I have not had a cold since! Previously I would get back to back colds from being around the children, but not a single cold since! Had covid twice, but very very mild and wouldn't have known if I didn't test, but worked throughout it (I'm not jabbed either btw). Switching to a keto diet will take time to show the effects but it's done wonders for my health

Mardyface · 25/11/2022 23:54

Zinc, big vit C tablet, hot toddy and an early night.

Alysskea · 26/11/2022 00:04

First Defence or the Boots version! Miraculous. Not a Keto diet 🙄

Fizzadora · 26/11/2022 00:13

I can feel a cold coming on, that horrid tingly feeling at the back of the nose. I gargle with vinegar if the throat gets sore but will be off to the chemist for the first defence spray tomorrow.
I hadn't had a cold or flu for about 10 years due to practising social distancing at work well before it became compulsory in 2020.
I took early retirement at the end of 2019 so managed to pretty much stay at home and avoid anything contagious but then started to look after my (now) 18 month old GD 2 days a week and as she is also in nursery 2 days she seems to come home with a new cold every 2-3 weeks and I have caught every one of them.

Whiskey.
Sudafed, paracetamol, high dose vitamin C, zinc. Garlic/hot curry.

Closely followed by an indigestion tablet!

What a genius combination!

LunaTheCat · 26/11/2022 00:17

My husbands hot toddy… just on second one as I speak 🤣🤣

KnottyKnitting · 26/11/2022 00:20

Echinacea- the minute I feel I have a cold coming I take it and it either stops it in its tracks or reduces the length.

HopRockers · 26/11/2022 00:20

Extra nasal rinse
a fuck load of VitD
But mostly SLEEP

3luckystars · 26/11/2022 00:20

A hat! Leave it on, even in bed.

IDidntKnowItWasAParty · 26/11/2022 00:22

Lemsip Max All-in-One
It keeps me going when I am sick and need to keep going

StrawberryPot · 26/11/2022 00:23

Agree with others - echinacea

IDidntKnowItWasAParty · 26/11/2022 00:24

Also Strepsils medicated blackcurrant throat lozenges

LibertyLily · 26/11/2022 00:59

First Defence spray works for me - although only if taken really early on. Must admit I've not had a cold for about four years - since moving to our drafty old house!

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 26/11/2022 01:02

Eat a clove of raw garlic.
