should I report this?

Not sure if this should really be in AIBU but just need some advice.

I went to the GP today for a blood test with the HCA. At one point she left the room to consult with the duty GP about one of the symptoms I was having. She was gone about 5-6 minutes.

She left the computer on, unlocked and with her staff card in it. I could easily have looked up another patient. Obviously I didn't, but it is a potential security breach. I feel like I should alert the surgery, just so they can remind staff to lock the machine if leaving it unattended.

What would other people do in this scenario?

I'd not be an arse and not go looking for trouble, myself.

I would have just sat there and appreciated that this is what was required of me. I wouldn't have dreamt of attempting to invade the security of the surgery; but then, that's me.

Next time, if you go in, get a needle, then get that needle removed and told to go sit on your car until you're recalled to get another needle- remember why.

Choice4567 · 25/11/2022 20:26

@Fordian huh?

EmmaGrundyForPM · 25/11/2022 20:30

I'm not sure I understand that response? As I said, I had no intention of looking anyone up, but I could have. If she regularly leaves patients alone with the PC unlocked, then someone might well be nosey. It's a village surgery, lots of people know each other.

no harm was done. Why complain? She trusted you so accept that.

???
Have you been on the wine?

WeDontNeedToTalkAboutJamie · 25/11/2022 20:33

Personally I think that's a massive potential security breach. You didn't look at anything, but another patient might.

When i worked in Healthcare we weren't allowed to leave our computers logged in if else left the room, and the only other people in the office would have been colleagues who could technically access all the info themselves.

Comedycook · 25/11/2022 20:33

No I wouldn't report that. Can't believe you're even giving it headspace to be honest

Purplecatshopaholic · 25/11/2022 20:34

Only here to find out what Fordians needle story means!

RememberedForAllTheWrongReasons · 25/11/2022 20:35

Do Nothing. Whilst, theoretically, you could (if you knew their system AND a name to search for) access another patients details, the reality is you wouldn’t have even attempted it because she could have been 1 min rather than 5 for all you knew. At most you could have had a look at the screen at your own notes in that times.

I’ve been in a similar situation where a GP left me in the room with her computer unlocked. I work on the same system at my surgery so it briefly crossed my mind to click on the bit to have a look at the figures for my last blood test but I didn’t because, you know, decency.

I think PP is referring to vaccines and the hassle is could mean with increased security? Due to patients snooping? I tried.

NippyWoowoo · 25/11/2022 20:35

Oh and no I'd leave it OP

namechangedx50 · 25/11/2022 20:35

Agreed that's a huge security breach but I can't say I think I'd take the time out of my day to go back and make a complaint.

Don't know wtf that first response was about. Why are we talking about sticking needles into ourselves?Confused

Maybe report is the wrong word, maybe I mean make the surgery aware. I'm a social worker and would never leave my computer unlocked, even if no one is in the room. And certainly not if there are clients in the room. I just think it's open to potential abuse.

NippyWoowoo · 25/11/2022 20:36

Oh wait no needle = vaccine doesn't make sense due to having it removed. No idea.

Greenshake · 25/11/2022 20:37

Why didn’t you just mention it to the HCA at the time if you were that concerned by it?

Bouledeneige · 25/11/2022 20:39

No I'm not that kind of person.

sloanedanger · 25/11/2022 20:41

Christ don’t bother. When my DC had to have an x day the doctor had left the x ray of the previous patient on the screen, name and DOB.

nopenotplaying · 25/11/2022 20:42

A similar thing happened to me. Small town. An acquaintance from the school gates saw my records on the screen. She'd been for her antenatal appointment the nurse left the room briefly and my details were showing. She'd called me to make a booking appointment that day. The acquaintance told me it had happened, we'd not announced pregnancy but she was very discreet. I called and complained it was a data leak, staff should always remove their cards and lock the screen. I'm now close friends with the acquaintance, but it could've been a different story. What if I didn't want anyone to know etc. you should report this

MonkeysNeverLie · 25/11/2022 20:43

Yeah I wouldn’t report either.

The needle thing though… so many questions 😂

dudsville · 25/11/2022 20:44

I'm only hear for the needle story clarification!

BobbyBobbyBobby · 25/11/2022 20:45

No need to report unless you are especially a nasty person.

SunshineAndFizz · 25/11/2022 20:48

Here to find out what the needle thing means.

PS no don't report it.

Dotingmumandgranny · 25/11/2022 20:48

No, because I wouldn't want to get anyone into trouble.

MajorCarolDanvers · 25/11/2022 20:52

Don't be a dick

HCP have enough on their plates.

If you felt that strongly why didn't you say something to her at the time.
