Has anyone else's dc never been ill beyond a cold?

My dc are 15 and 16 and I was thinking today, beyond a sniffle and a cold, they've never been ill. Seems quite a rare thing?

We are a normal family as in they go to school, we're not overly cautious on cleaning the house top to bottom, they socialise and live fairly normal lives as teens. I hear of people and children getting flu/sickness bugs/bronchitis/general illnesses. I myself have suffered tonsillitis/strep throat over the years.

Has anyone else's dc not been poorly in their childhoods?

Not even vomiting bugs?!

Redwineandroses · 23/11/2022 22:39

No, never 🤔

I once read a blogger describing her kids bedding and bunk beds and saying her kids had never vomited so they only had once set of bedding each. It stuck in my mind and I still find that very unusual! We however have a B&Q wick bucket in the airing cupboard just in case!

Oh they definitely have more than one bedding set 😁 Especially when little, my ds used to be a bed wetter!

My eldest vomited once at around 18 months and once about 7 when we all got norovirus and that was it until she discovered alcohol.

Younger ones far far far more!

Beachdays44 · 23/11/2022 22:44

My 3 have never really been sick (aged now 7 to 11). No vomiting (except a little as babies). No colds. Never had to take antibiotics.
My husband and I are fairly similar.. very rarely need to see doctor thankfully. Think we're just lucky - diet is average..a lot of room for improvement. I'm not very fussy about cleaning hands or sterilising surfaces! We all got covid but were largely asymptomatic.

Redwineandroses · 23/11/2022 22:44

They must have one hell of an immune system! I can't even credit it to anything I've ever done so maybe they just got lucky!

Crikey that’s amazing! So they haven’t had chicken pox? I’d be inclined to get them immunised if they haven’t had it already.

Katapolts · 23/11/2022 22:50

Mine have never been seriously ill but have all had stomach bugs, chicken pox and covid.

I'd be a bit concerned about yours getting chicken pox as adults.

EnglishGirlApproximately · 23/11/2022 22:51

My ten year old has had chicken pox but other than that never more than a mild cold. He's only vomited once in his life (thankfully as I'm not the best at dealing with it). Thinking about it though I don't think I've vomited for probably 30 years, certainly not in recent memory.

Amboseli · 23/11/2022 22:51

Mine are 16 and 19 and touch wood have only ever had the odd mild cold. DS 16 has probably missed about 3 days off school since he started age 4. I'm the same, might get the odd sniffle but only lasts 24 hours. Never had covid.

The house is clean but not pristine. It's just luck I think. DH has has had far more colds and ailments than me but I think that's because he was brought up on antibiotics by his hypochondriac mother.

Beees · 23/11/2022 22:52

Goodness me one child is impressive but 2 is bloody amazing!

No sickness bugs, no chickenpox, HFM, chest infections, tonsillitis, ear infection etc that's got to be almost unheard of?

wishing3 · 23/11/2022 22:55

They should be studied by science! Lucky them!

They had chicken pox but weren't poorly with it. My dd had about 20 spots when she was 2 but no other symptoms, so as we had to stay away from nursery that week I potty trained her! My ds who was a baby at that time only had a few spots but also never has symptoms.

Mine don’t tend to get things you can catch - eg colds, viruses and vomiting type things much. Never had a vomit bug related bed change over three DC.

Covid got the whole house but only once. They’ve all had chickenpox once each but didn’t catch it from each other and none were ill with it - felt fine with a small scattering of pox.

No HFM, ear infections, chest infections or tonsillitis.

One got a UTI once.

Wailywailywaily · 23/11/2022 22:58

DS1 is 22 and never had a vomiting bug or flu. When he got chicken pox he had three spots and that was that. He did get Covid this year and his world collapsed as he had a his first high fever.
DS2 is 13 and had every bloody virus and bacterial infection going including pneumonia. But not had Covid, yet.

To be fair I've never had a sickness bug either. I've never had diarrhoea or been sick (outside of pregnancy or alcohol induced sickness).

My 13 year old DS is like this. He had chicken pox when he was 2, and he's been sick twice in his life - both times just "one-offs" and not part of a bug or anything.
He has never had a cold or flu or anything like that. He did get covid but was completely asymptomatic - none of us quite believed he had it until 2 pcr tests confirmed it. But he wasn't just "not ill" with covid, he was actually really well and full of energy.
I'm so jealous of him.

thaegumathteth · 23/11/2022 23:01

@Redwineandroses I think I'd get their immunity tested for chickenpox especially your youngest as they say a mild case can mean they don't develop immunity if they're little. Dd was a baby when she caught them off ds and although she wasn't that unwell she did have hundreds and hundreds of spots.

Beginningless · 23/11/2022 23:02

That’s amazing. We have literally had a vomiting bug at least once a year every year for the 7 that we’ve had children. I don’t remember vomiting much as a child, I can’t believe how often it happens and I now get quite anxious about it.

Wherearemymarbles · 23/11/2022 23:02

ours are 16 an 13 and between them have only missed 3 days of school.
pre school the did get sick bugs.
im 54 and have never been bed ridden with flu and probably had fewer than 10 days off work my whole career and never taken 2 consecutive day
lucky i guess

Beees · 23/11/2022 23:03

How? I mean genuinely how is possible to have never had sickness and diarrhea that's bonkers. I'm seriously finding it so hard to comprehend. Honestly very very lucky.

welshweasel · 23/11/2022 23:04

I can't recall either of mine having a fever. They've been vaccinated against chicken pox, I think the youngest may have had mild HFM but nothing else. Neither have had antibiotics or been to the doctors for anything other than routine immunisations.

They've had the odd one off vomit. I realise we've been very lucky!

urrrgh46 · 23/11/2022 23:05

My eldest Ds was like that - never had more than a cold. Never had a vomiting bug even when his siblings did...then age 17 developed very severe ulcerative colitis, which is autoimmune - took 18 months to get him into remission. He's 20 now. Fortunately, despite the immunosuppressive drugs he takes he got Covid only mildly - I think we were more unwell than him!

Redwineandroses · 23/11/2022 23:05

I don't know 🤷🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️ I just never pick up bugs. I have suffered awful tonsillitis and ear infections though so maybe that's my "thing" 🤔
