Has anyone else's dc never been ill beyond a cold?

My dc are 15 and 16 and I was thinking today, beyond a sniffle and a cold, they've never been ill. Seems quite a rare thing?

We are a normal family as in they go to school, we're not overly cautious on cleaning the house top to bottom, they socialise and live fairly normal lives as teens. I hear of people and children getting flu/sickness bugs/bronchitis/general illnesses. I myself have suffered tonsillitis/strep throat over the years.

Has anyone else's dc not been poorly in their childhoods?

No, I've never had d&v or a sickness bug either.

Oblomov22 · 24/11/2022 10:42

Ds's had chicken pox and conjunctivitis as nursery. Nothing at school that I can remember, both had about 3 days off school in total schooling, primary and secondary. Ds1 reckoned he had a bit of uni freshers flu but he just got on with it.

2 of my friends the same. My closest friend, her dd aged 14 hasn't had a day off school so far.

Oblomov22 · 24/11/2022 10:44

I have about a total of a week off work in 15 years.

My DD has been pretty clear of sickness. Never really had a proper sickness but. Colds don't really bother her. She had Covid once and you wouldn't have know. Even when she had chickenpox she was only really ill for a day or so. Now I've said that I've prob jinxed it 😂

@Beginningless

I can’t believe how often it happens and I now get quite anxious about it.

Do they go to nursery? I think it's a breeding ground for sick bugs.

@converseandjeans , each only started nursery at 3 so that wasn’t the cause for the first few years, but I suppose the older one was bringing things home to the wee one before she went herself. Eldest got her first vomity bug at 5 months I think, I remember holding her and trying to direct the puke to easy clean places on the floor! I always catch it from them, and DH is much less often. They were breastfed, stopped sterilising stuff early, let them roll in the mud etc, all the things they say build the immune system. Just how it is I guess.

Rockingcloggs · 24/11/2022 11:30

He's had a couple of colds and had pneumonia when he was 4 but he has never not once been sick! He never had so much as milk coming up as a baby and now after 11 years I think he'd be scared to death when he does eventually vomit!

It does come across as a bit braggy.

I wouldn't consider my DD to be particularly sickly (in the past year she's had covid, a chest infection requiring antibiotics and has another virus right now) but I think that's pretty normal, so to hear about children who apparently literally never get ill is a bit irritating.

I can't imagine how I'd feel reading this if she had a more serious condition or had ever been hospitalised which many many children of MNers will have been.

By that logic people would never post anything in case someone was offended by it.

In the same way someone who's struggling with fertility wouldn't click on a pregnancy thread if it upset them, you wouldn't click on a thread with people talking about their dc not getting ill if yours had serious conditions or hospitalised and you were going to be upset by it. The onus is on the person not to click on obvious threads that may upset them, not on the other person to not start threads in case it upsets someone. If that were the case we'd have hardly any threads in fear of upsetting someone on a subject.

My son is 7 and never had a sickness bug ever. When he was a newborn I had the nourivirus when he was only 6 days old, and he still didn't catch it.

touch wood though as you never know Grin

Tiggy321 · 24/11/2022 19:10

My kids- now young adults / teens are never ill either. Neither am I ! No vomiting bugs, ear infections even when they were small. Amazing immune system clearly tho sometimes I wish I could have a day off work when colleagues are always off 🤣

That's not the same at all - pregnancy isn't a rare occurrence in the same way a child never having been ill is. Also, there's generally some point to pregnancy threads such as wanting advice, sharing worries etc. What really is the point of this thread? A better example would be starting a thread called something like "has anybody else never had any kind of money troubles" and you'd rightly watch them getting their arse handed to them.

Do you know what blood group you are OP? It's thought A or AB don't get sickness bugs so much.

Grey23 · 24/11/2022 19:25

I also have children than have need vomited in their lives. That said I have not been sick for about 40 years.

Grey23 · 24/11/2022 19:26

We are all blood group AB-

PicturesOfDogs · 24/11/2022 19:27

I don’t recall either of mine ever having a sickness bug. Other than as babies sicking up milk etc. They are 11 and 13 now. I think I’ve only ever had to clean up sick for one of them once.

They get other things though, the oldest tends to get coughs/chest infections, and the youngest tends to have problems with digestion.

I think people are usually more susceptible to getting a ‘type’ of sickness, some a lucky that they don’t get anything

There's a point to this thread too, people talking about how their dc have never/rarely been ill. No one on here has come on saying its something they've done specifically and have put it down to luck/said how bizarre it is.

Nothing like someone bragging about never having money troubles at all in a smug way.

If someone is going to get upset, the title is clear and they can easily avoid clicking on it.

My daughter had one ear infection requiring ABs and a few colds and viruses until she was about 12. She would run quite high temperatures at the end of term and take to her bed and sleep it off.
Second-born child— more immunity?

I don’t think she had stomach things either.

Her older brother had pneumonia and bronchilolitis at 11-12 months.

user564576 · 24/11/2022 19:33

I had a friend in secondary school who had never vomited, it blew my mind! I wonder if she has yet?!

AntlerRose · 24/11/2022 19:34

Chicken pox, slapped cheek, hand foot and mouth, norivirus 3 times, chest infection, ear infection, covid twice, shingles.

This is interesting, I’m A+ and don’t tend to get a lot of the vomiting bugs.
I have had them before, but only once or twice.

Oh how interesting, I remember she was a rare blood group because she'd always make sure she gave blood. Oh I'm going to have to message her on FB even though we haven't spoken in like 15 years 😂

O negative is the best blood re donating as anyone can receive it, so may be that

FTMworrier · 24/11/2022 19:41

Oh my goodness, I am beyond jealous of you! My little one isn’t even two and we’ve had Covid, HFM, chicken pox, colds including snot coming out of his eyes he was so bunged up, multiple viral infections and countless vomiting bugs. Including one this week that the whole family has now had 🤷🏻‍♀️

user564576 · 24/11/2022 19:42

@PicturesOfDogs oh ok, I only remember that she wanted to donate blood because she had an unusual one.

Champagneforeveryone · 24/11/2022 19:49

DS(18) is that child.

We've done the usual colds and coughs and on one occasion a burst ear drum. He's recently been diagnosed with IBS that he's managed to very quickly be able to control (something I wasn't able to do for some years at his age) Never any vomiting bugs etc, and he also managed to avoid Covid while holed up in a small cottage with DH and I who were positive.

As a family we are all relatively healthy, have always had pets and while we don't live in squalor, our home can in no way be described as a show home. When he was younger (and compliant!) we spent a lot of time outdoors but there seemed no change in his overall health once he chose not to join us.
