My dentist would like £150 for a white filling for DS - id this the standard rate?

Apparently, they are able to fit a silver filling on the NHS but not a white one for the area of the mouth in which he needs it. The surgery is really grubby and the dentist is extremely heavy handed.

Could anyone recommend a private practice in London with more reasonable rates and cleaner conditions who offer both NHS and private? Thanks

You're not gonna get a composite filling in london for less than that.

PilatesPeach · 23/11/2022 10:11

Find a different dentist but that is normal for a medium white filling in the Home Counties (Surrey) in my experience - pay for someone you trust but unlikely to find it cheaper in London.

What I don't understand is that regardless of the filling, they would have to undertake the same preparation and procedure which is presumably NHS funded. So are they charging £150 for a tiny bit of composite filling?

Is it a baby tooth or an adult tooth?

Same here , North London.

Threadkillacilla · 23/11/2022 10:15

It's £135 in SY so not that much cheaper up north.

Kerfluffle · 23/11/2022 10:16

If that is the going rate regardless of where you have it done then I suppose I could still look for a cleaner surgery. I know about the shortage of dentists everywhere but it is really hard to feel grateful when the equipment is caked in dirt and grime.

It really shouldn't be dirty.

HundredMilesAnHour · 23/11/2022 10:20

I think that's pretty cheap for a composite filling in London actually.

HanSB · 23/11/2022 10:24

I was charged £68 in London during the summer at an NHS dentist

Lastqueenofscotland2 · 23/11/2022 10:27

I recently paid £165…

TiredButAlive · 23/11/2022 10:27

The last time I had a white filling - a year ago - I think I paid £55 on top of the standard NHS charge for a non-white filling. So that would have been £120-ish? Near Cambridge.

That's the exact price I've been quoted for DD (In the midlands, if it's relevant)

Could you possibly share the name of the practice or PM me please? I know it is likely that they will not take on new patients but the difference is huge!

£144 in South Devon.

SylvanianFrenemies · 23/11/2022 10:28

My DD (11) got one on a back tooth for no charge. Baby tooth.

thebestsellingshow · 23/11/2022 10:31

I've just had a white filling on the NHS and just paid the normal charge for a filling, so surely they have some discretion especially with a child?

3peassuit · 23/11/2022 10:33

I paid £180 for a small white filling last year.

FTM2022SS · 23/11/2022 10:34

3 years ago in the North West I paid £110.00, it's deemed as private and cosmetic if a silver filling would be sufficient for the area. I chose to pay the extra given the placement of the tooth that cracked. Just to make you aware too they don't last as long so will likely need to be replaced in the future is what I was advised too.

I wouldn't be getting NHS work done there, let alone private.

£150 sounds about the norm. But get it done somewhere clean.

AdoraBell · 23/11/2022 10:37

I’m not up to date with London prices but with the grubby surgery and heavy handed dentist I would look for a different dentist. Are there any others in your area that you could check out?

Kerfluffle · 23/11/2022 10:41

They either seem to have no capacity or do not even bother calling back. After my basic clean I spat out a mouthful of blood. I don't generally suffer from bleeding gums but I cannot recall this ever happening before. A basic clean should not be excruciatingly painful and bloody, should it?

This is the first time we have had appointments since the pandemic so I could have forgotten. I would appreciate any recommendations within London.
