Do small, cheap (ish) dehumidifiers work?

I don’t have much space and can’t afford an expensive one, I’ve seen a few small £50 on Amazon, are these completely worthless or would they do the job?

What will you be using it for?

I have a large 10L one that that I got for around £100 a year ago. It really is a game changer when it comes to drying clothes and getting rid of damp.

What make is it? I’m looking for one as my bedroom is getting mouldy this winter.

we’ve got a small one and it’s really good effective. Collects so much water.

Have you tried Gumtree and/or Marketplace? I got both of mine 2nd hand.

Ballsaque · 22/11/2022 00:31

I used to have a small Probreeze one from Amazon,it was about £35 I think? It seemed to collect a fair amount but nothing can compare to the Meaco one I bought (10l one).
I also bought one from Currys (possibly Logic?) and it seems brilliant.

so i think it’s better to buy a bigger one. There are loads on EBay/Marketplace.

Hi @Miss03852 thanks for posting! Just wanted to point you in the direction of our page for the best dehumidifiers as recommended by Mumsnet users in case it's helpful at all. Hope it's of some use, please feel free to let us know if you've any feedback! Smile

formulatingAresponse · 22/11/2022 14:12

I'd read the reviews very carefully.

I've just bought a Meaco 10L which costs more but I'm amazed at how much water it's already sucked in.

4 pints yesterday but that did include the laundry which magically all dried overnight including a hoodie, has been taking up to 3 days recently in lower room temp of 17/18

So yes they're definitely worth getting

Dogtooth · 22/11/2022 14:22

I think the size can be adjusted according to the room they're working in, so a small one might work for a cupboard or caravan but not a big open plan room. You need to think how you will use it - a small one might also need emptying more regularly, are you around to do that in the day? Someone handy could probably rig up some kind of overflow system to increase the volume.

I got mine from appliances direct, they have some ones around £50 that might be better than amazon. I got Electriq ones, been working about 5 years so far with no problems.

JonSnowedUnder · 22/11/2022 14:31

IME no. We've got 2 medium mid-price dehumidifiers on the ground and 1st floor of our house and the performance of the cheaper smaller one I got for the 2nd floor doesn't compare. It does extract some water but there have been times where I haven't had to empty it for weeks compared to the bigger units which are every day or two.

If you can spend a bit more (and look for offers) and get a decent sized one and not one of Amazon's 'Sponsored Products'.

amicissimma · 22/11/2022 15:11

I just posted on the 'Who's got a dehumidifier' thread. I have a small one and a larger one.

It seems to be a case of the the more expensive, more electricity-hungry one doing a better job. So for each situation, it's a case of striking a balance.

Miss03852 · 22/11/2022 15:21

Thanks for all your replies, I’ll probably try and get a goodish one on eBay.

Do report back OP! I'm looking for same but don't want to spend more than 50 quid if possible.

SlipperySlope99 · 22/11/2022 15:57

After reading all the reviews, I’ve just purchased the Probreeze 1500, it’s £47.99 from probreeze at the moment- free delivery, same one on Amazon is £69.99
Fingers crossed for some good water sucking

Will do, when it’s delivered 😁

Comedycook · 22/11/2022 16:02

I have a small one...I found it useless to be honest

SlipperySlope99 · 23/11/2022 16:58

Miss03852
It came this afternoon- I had it on by washing that was finishing off after being on the line, for an hour and it’s been in the dining room for an hour now- have been getting mould dust on the wooden furniture in there
I’ve just emptied the collection tray - for you 😁and I have a 1 and half tablespoons of water in there
I’m impressed

Yes I think they don’t compare. I have a smallish one and honestlu I need a much bigger one, as it is just not able to cope with a larger room.

to explain, a large one will pull a litre an hour on average. So the table spoon shows how poor it is in comparison.

Tangerineartichoke · 23/11/2022 17:08

I have two big ones over that budget but they are well worth the money. Save up if you have to get a good one, that will cope with laundry too. My DH being cheap brought two small probreeze ones. They were useless.

Turquoisa80 · 23/11/2022 17:11

I bought this dehumidifier bit more expensive.. We got it for 80£ as we had a voucher. But it works, amazingly and pulls moisture and is really drying my washing.. The tank holds 2litres (I think) and after 5 or 6hours it's full and needs emptying. It also shows the humidity level of the room.. So before putting the washing near it, it's about 58% and it goes up 74% when wet laundry is nearby. It's honestly amazing

SlipperySlope99 · 23/11/2022 17:15

Oh well, I’m obviously easily pleased 😀

formulatingAresponse · 23/11/2022 17:21

Actually sorry the one I got was a 12L Meaco not 10L.

I'm getting approx 3 pints of water a day from it and our house isn't even damp.

I just wanted it for a room with externals walls at the back.
It really is amazing with laundry and I'll be testing it to see how it gets on in the bathroom after a shower or bath.

I usually keep the windows open but I'll try it out the dehumidifier with the windows shut and see what difference it makes.

Onthecuspofabreakthrough · 23/11/2022 17:22

Do you need one per room? Or can you just rotate which room you use it in?

Mines heavy but portable so I've moved it to a couple of different rooms.
