I find this sort of thing really interesting. I’m sorry, I don’t have a direct link so I don’t know which region it’s from - l hope the photo attached okay.

”Rising of the lights” - any ideas?

Could jawfain possibly be something like severe loss of appetite? Presumably a symptom of another unknown illness?

Lockjaw possibly, aka tetanus.

Spambod · 21/11/2022 22:11

Thank you for posting. The infant mortality is staggering and so sad. 27 poor buggers died of worms. So many illnesses here that we would not die of just minor irritations.

ButAmI · 21/11/2022 22:12

I’m pretty sure overlaid is still used. I have a recollection of reading it in a paper recently about overlaid statistics because it took me a second to work out what they meant.

Motylanoga · 21/11/2022 22:12

Let's all pick a way to go.... me

Rising of the lights 😆

I can’t quite get over dying of piles.

I wonder if piles is what we would now know as a type of bowel cancer or something like that?

ScottBakula · 21/11/2022 22:16

Oh heck excuse my typo, the list of thing women died of

  • *though who ever wrote that list would probably say woman could die of lust too 😀
ShakeYourFeathers · 21/11/2022 22:17

What was cut of the stone??

EmmaAgain22 · 21/11/2022 22:06

Have we got an answer for "planet"? Maybe an asteroid landed on them? Are they double counted because of the people who died of several accidents? 😂😂

Planet was a way of explaining away the unexplainable by kind of saying “just bad luck”. Think of astrologers talking about how the alignment of the stars/planets influences our lives.

Not sure how you measure it though!

In the past I’ve seen a list of reasons for women being admitted to Victorian asylums. I’m sure “lust” was one of them!

ShakeYourFeathers · 21/11/2022 22:25

With all these unexplained deaths I.e planets you could literally get away with murder. Posion could easily pass for many of these. Especially with lack of police and forensics and things

What was cut of the stone??

Surgery to remove bladder stone.

LearnerCook · 21/11/2022 22:28

This is fascinating, OP.

Sciatica!!

ShakeYourFeathers · 21/11/2022 22:28

Surgery to remove bladder stone. Good to know thanks

Here we go, the list of “reasons for admission” for women in an asylum in West Virginia.

Turns out its not quite all it seems (as per this link which explains it a bit more www.snopes.com/fact-check/reasons-admission-insane-asylum-1800s/ ) but it’s amusing all the same!

With regard to lampreys, this is what they look like. How could anyone eat even one let alone enough to kill you?

They remind me of the Sarlacc in Return of the Jedi

Eat them before they eat you!

Some of those are really sad. Especially when many of those are very easily treated these days

Wonder what scarlatina is.

Want to know the back story to Marriage of son

Hmm
I'm not sure I can make sense of that as an explanation for the inexplicable....

I've got the giggles now so I'm imagining someone being strangled by cartoon worms. Thanks for posting this OP.

@ShakeYourFeathers I imagine “marriage of son” to be a MIL driven mad by the undeserving wench her PFB has chosen to marry - classic MN material 😜

I had scarlatina as a small child. I think my parents were told it was like scarlet fever.
