I find this sort of thing really interesting. I’m sorry, I don’t have a direct link so I don’t know which region it’s from - l hope the photo attached okay.

”Rising of the lights” - any ideas?

My relative from long ago, did that operation on Samuel Pepys!
I have been married, so not outed myself.
Its facinating.

imbacktoshowyoumydress · 21/11/2022 21:18

@NormalNans
I did a normal history BA then I did a Masters in Early Modern History and my specialist area was the construction of masculine identity and the primary research I did was study thousands of Old Bailey murder trials during 18th century.

It was so interesting!

ShakeYourFeathers · 21/11/2022 21:19

If anyone has the opportunity to go to the old operating theatre in London. It's worth it. Good for kids too. Its fascinating

That sounds amazing! I would have love to do that or similar

With regard to lampreys, this is what they look like. How could anyone eat even one let alone enough to kill you?

They remind me of the Sarlacc in Return of the Jedi

I'm loving this thread. David Baddiel did a tour about 25+ years ago and analysised a chart like this. I can still remember the stitch I got from laughing so much but actually I much prefer the explanations I'm getting here.

imbacktoshowyoumydress · 21/11/2022 21:27

Aw thanks everyone! Over a decade ago now! But I still adore history, just not many jobs in this area.

If you are interested in this area, the old bailey proceedings are available online they were all digitised. There are also some excellent books about Newgate prison and law/order in London I can recommend.

AdaColeman · 21/11/2022 21:27

Tympany was a general term that covered swellings of the digestive tract which gave a hollow sound when tapped, the cause could be liver disease or infection of the intestine amongst several other causes.

I've got sciatica myself at present, and am definitely at death's door.

AuntieJoyce · 21/11/2022 20:35

Do you think purples and spotted fever is meningitis?

Septicaemia I would hazard a guess.

ShakeYourFeathers · 21/11/2022 21:30

I thought tympany would have something to do with the ear

Because of tympany drums and the tympanic membrane in your ear

Ogonek · 21/11/2022 21:39

immbacktoshowyoumydress I was just about to post that Old Bailey trials link!

I shudder to think of being cut for the stone. Without anaesthetic. No wonder Pepys gave a feast to celebrate surviving it. It’s fascinating though that they now think he was probably inadvertently given a vasectomy in the process - he and his wife remained childless, to their great regret.

Nat6999 · 21/11/2022 21:40

The plague figures are better than covid, where are these figures for?

Toddlerteaplease · 21/11/2022 21:40

Fascinating, someone put a similar list from a parish in London a few weeks ago. Does it say where this one of from?

Oh yes please! Phone is about to die but this will keep me occupied while DH is watching football

CaveMum · 21/11/2022 21:44

I would have guessed that Tympany was gut related as in horses we refer to different types of colic and tympany is one of several types, usually associated with bloating and gas.

AdaColeman · 21/11/2022 21:46

@Cherrypies How interesting! I must get my Pepys out and read that part again. I remember he talks about his operation and the preparation for it in great detail.

imbacktoshowyoumydress · 21/11/2022 21:53

@NormalNans these ones are great!

The Gaol: The Story of Newgate - London's Most Notorious Prison

Newgate: London's Prototype of Hell

Blood and Guts - a short history of medicine by Roy Porter

London: a social history by Roy Porter

Actually Roy Porter has soooo many great books! I love them all

"Suddenly" 😳

Unforgettablefire · 21/11/2022 21:56

AdaColeman · 21/11/2022 20:18

Prest to death must have been a horrible way to die. A form of torture and execution that involved heavy weights, usually stones, being piled onto a prone person.

Sometimes, they put a stone beneath the person first, so as the weigh on top of them increased, their back was broken. It was often used during questioning a suspect, and is where "to press someone for an answer" comes from.

Makes sense "pressing questions"
Quite brutal in those days what a time to be alive!

RedToothBrush · 21/11/2022 21:57

A world without antibiotics and anesthestic is terrifying. Many of these causes of death are so preventable just with those available.

It puts a lot into perspective.

Life expectancy was so short. It would be easy to get an ear infection and that's it, dead. Or have a minor cut on your finger and that's it, dead.

Now we worry about cancer but i think these are scarier in a way because death was often so sudden and immediate.

EmmaAgain22 · 21/11/2022 22:06

Have we got an answer for "planet"? Maybe an asteroid landed on them? Are they double counted because of the people who died of several accidents? 😂😂
