I find this sort of thing really interesting. I’m sorry, I don’t have a direct link so I don’t know which region it’s from - l hope the photo attached okay.

”Rising of the lights” - any ideas?

Look at the number for teeth!

Peteryougit · 21/11/2022 19:37

And that one poor bugger with piles!

Love that 'cancer and wolf' is all one category.

Jellykat · 21/11/2022 19:38

Interesting!

Quick google gives-
rising of the lights (uncountable) (obsolete or historical) An illness or obstructive condition of the larynx, trachea, or lungs, found as a cause of death on bills of mortality in the 16- and 1700s; possibly croup.

Emmelina · 21/11/2022 19:39

Kill’d by several accidents sounds like a story to be told! 😁

myrtlehuckingfuge · 21/11/2022 19:40

Rising of the lights is an obstructive disease of the larynx or lungs (croup possibly). I took a photo of this too when I saw it on Twitter. Surprised that witchcraft/curse/hex wasn't attributed to any deaths. Planet?!?

woodhill · 21/11/2022 19:40

Fascinating but awful

MangoDaquiri · 21/11/2022 19:40

Cancer… and wolf?

watcherintherye · 21/11/2022 19:40

It’s really interesting. ‘Made away themselves’ is quite a gentle way of describing it.

Doublevision5 · 21/11/2022 19:41

Very interesting! "Suddenly" as a cause of death made me laugh.

Violashift · 21/11/2022 19:41

Died of piles.Confused

minticecreamisjustok · 21/11/2022 19:41

And there's 'suddenly' when they aren't sure why.

StonebyChristmas · 21/11/2022 19:42

Kings Evil and Cut of the Stone?

really interesting OP, thanks for sharing.

myrtlehuckingfuge · 21/11/2022 19:43

It was from London 1632 according to 'No context Britain' tweet.

Doormatnomore · 21/11/2022 19:44

”Bit with a mad dog” nice and clear, sorta suggests they didn’t stand a chance. “Executed and press’d to death” scores more than I would have thought.

apalershadeoflight · 21/11/2022 19:45

Fascinating and very intriguing!

Planet?!

DuncanBiscuits · 21/11/2022 19:45

I think King’s Evil might be syphilis or gonorrhea.

AlphaAlpha · 21/11/2022 19:45

Overlaid, and starved at nurse?!

State of the NHS then to now...

(I'm aware the NHS didn't exist then, obvs)

Greybeardy · 21/11/2022 19:46

@Peteryougit Rising of the lights is ‘coughing your lungs up’ - ‘lights’ is apparently what butchers used to call lungs. Would fit with any infective respiratory problem.

viques · 21/11/2022 19:46

tissick sounds like a nice refined illness to die from, a slightly tickly cough that took a turn for the worse I imagine. Probably not.

Pixiedust1234 · 21/11/2022 19:47

I want to know more about these shady accidents 😮

Needmorelego · 21/11/2022 19:47

38 people really pissed the King off....

No, Scrofula - a type of tuberculosis I think

Wouldn't "starved at nurse" relate to failure to breastfeed?
