Stupidest reasons for skiving

Today I've had to pull someone up for refusing to come to work because it's raining 🙄 It's a nice cosy office job, they live 10 minutes away and AFAIK they are not the wicked witch of the West.

The best one I've had previously is someone calling me from the motorway saying they had to turn around and go home because they'd forgotten their trousers.

Any other good ones?

Trousers? Grin

MissNowt · 22/11/2022 07:14

I used to work with a serial skiver - she rang to say she wouldn’t be coming in that day because she had to rub lard on her cat’s boil. 🙄

Gemmanorthdevon · 22/11/2022 08:03

My favorite one was from a colleague, amazing lad but we despaired!

Took evening medication in the morning by mistake which included a sleeping tablet.

Got locked in the house by girlfriend.

Was SO tired.

Next door house on fire, had volunteered to take care of the elderly lady owner alongside her own family and WAS NOT leaving her.

If I had more time I could go on!

LaBobkin · 22/11/2022 09:12

A member of my team had to take a day off work because 'the office was cold yesterday'. It was cold for everyone that day (and the day she missed, too) because the heating was broken.

😂 😂 😂

To be fair- my husband, who is the most dedicated workaholic alive, once took about 20 mins to walk up our driveway as it was so icy. I was pregnant and watching from the upstairs window at the time and I nearly wet myself laughing 😂

I work with 3 ‘sick notes’

a married lady, her husband and her lesbian lover-they come in for a few weeks, all go on the sick together and once those run out, there’s endless moaning if they do have to go in or endless excuses as to why they can’t do that shift

the latest one is the wife bought her girlfriend a kitten-but from a backyard breeder-so it’s only a surprise to them that the poor kitten was ill and has sadly died-cue,two weeks of moaning, tears or sick days (they hoard animals-not one gets walked or taken to a vet)
all pictures of the dead kitten have been put on fb and the fb work page for our pleasure

Another excuse was that they’d all broken down on the way to work-3 of them in two cars-that both broke down on the same bit of road-together
work believed them until about 3 hours into their shift-they walked in,sat down and ordered for themselves and the kids
they all got defensive when it was pointed out that they could have worked from that point but where choosing not to

All 3 once went off with ‘period pains’
hubby included

they once rang in saying that their kid had been hit by a car-and was in hospital, all 3 parents just had to go with her
the truth was they where not keeping an eye on her,(on a busy road)she ran out in front of my dps car-he missed her,but did hoot to get her to move-she ran back to her parents who picked her up and put her in the car
next thing I know, they’d rang in to take the day off-thankfully it was all on cctv so they where proved to be liars but for some reason they’ve kept their jobs

for some reason they’ve kept their jobs

This is the baffling part.

I had one particular team member who called in sick at least once a week. Covid was great for him because every time he sniffed he would gleefully inform me that he had to isolate.

Think manual job, no option to WFH.

Anyway I was getting the ball rolling for occupational health and disciplinary procedures and one day he actually called up and said "I'm out of excuses - I'm just not coming in today". As if it was optional.

I tip my hat to him! What happened?

Tiredasamf · 22/11/2022 14:31

Just yesterday I was 45 minutes late to my 4th shift at a new job because I got almost all the way there and realised I had my husbands car keys in my pocket and he needed to go and pick our daughter up from dance class. I didn’t even have a contact number to call to let them know so just had to be late without warning them!! Felt like such a stupid excuse but was actually true!

NCgoingdry · 22/11/2022 14:47

@Edam1 I mean the gall was impressive - but it really really screwed everyone else over. Every single time.

After exhausting the disciplinary procedure he called up again to say that his mother in laws dog was unwell and I told him not to come back. AFAIK he got a new job shortly afterwards but only lasted two weeks, as surprise surprise, he rarely showed up.

Frozenhandsandtoes · 22/11/2022 14:51

One team member had beehives on his large balcony (in the city centre). Rang to say he'd be late 'cos they were swarming and he had to go catch them in a box and rehome them 🐝
They did make great honey!

LivingForPinkGin · 22/11/2022 15:06

We had somebody who used to call in sick a lot.

One Friday she called in sick saying she had pulled a muscle in her back and could not get out of bed. That night she was uploading pictures of herself onto social media swinging around a pole in a night club in a different city!! Think she had forgotten that she had all of us as friends on there!

Longjohn21 · 22/11/2022 15:11

One just msged the group chat saying, it looks like there's enough staff on the rota, so I'm not gonna come in.
Yes there was an extra on but they had only just started so we're training.
Or have had, I don't like who I'm working with so not coming in.
My partners locked themselves in the bathroom & won't come out to look after the kids (2 y/o & baby) he was at work at the time, had to spend 20£ on a taxi to get home.
Had a few just not turn up & then say, oh I didn't realise I was on the rota for that day.

MammaWeasel · 22/11/2022 15:12

I once missed a lecture at college because I was stuck in a car wash. Automatic car wash malfunctioned and we were in there for ages!

Murraysmum · 22/11/2022 15:17

A woman I once worked with rang in to say she wouldn't be in to work that day as the holiday company she had booked her Florida holiday with (in six months time) had been on the news that morning to say they had gone bust. She had to stay home to look for an alternative holiday to book apparently.

viques · 22/11/2022 15:25

We were once left with three Y1 children after school finished,no sign of their mothers - who were sisters btw- and no response from home phones ( pre mobile days). Then we had a call from the police. All three had been picked up in Oxford Street doing a bit of pre Christmas shop lifting. Cue embarassed Nanna turning up in a police car that had been sent to pick her up……..

RedRobyn2021 · 22/11/2022 15:25

When I was a teenager, I missed first period because my cat followed me to school and I was worried he wouldn't be able to find his way back home so I had to carry him back.

The teachers were not impressed but what could I have done?

MammaWeasel · 22/11/2022 18:27

Bump

SlatternIsMyMiddleName · 22/11/2022 19:52

Not an actual job but at an interview for a full time post in an office, the interviewee advised that she wanted the job but wouldn’t be available to come in on days the weather was good. The reason - she liked to garden when the weather was good.

Why apply for a full time office position then?

Jules912 · 22/11/2022 20:03

I once forgot to wear a bra to work, thought I could brazen it out and no one would notice as I was young, not particularly well endowed in that area and had a baggy jumper. Forgot it was the team Christmas party, for which we we're going bowling.

justgettingthroughtheday · 22/11/2022 20:16

On New Year's Day one year I came out the house for an early shift to find the village swarming with police. Armed police! I was shouted at to get inside and had to call work (I worked for the nhs) to tell them I couldn't get out of my house let alone the sleepy village in which I lived. It was clear they didn't believe me at the time but within an hour it was all over the local news.

I do like the idea of one day just saying “i’m
not coming in today because honestly, I’m just not feeling it. Got a shit load of jobs to do at home and then I need an afternoon nap. I’ll be in tomorrow bright as a button.

Kind regards”

I once worked in a place that had "duvet days" you could ring in and say just that!

You were allowed one per quater, it came out of your annual holiday allowance, and there were certain caveats like not after a works Christmas night out or bank holidays.

It reduced sickness, and people would be careful not to waste it, but felt like they had a choice whether to go in so it improved moral.

I think this is a really good idea. It stops people taking 3 days to "prove" they're actually ill, when they only need one.
