Motherland - functioning alcoholics?

LoveShitJokes · 20/11/2022 18:51

Now I LOVE Motherland and with the exception of Meg (who is far too full on for introverted little me) I would love to be friends with the gang.

But they seem to drink a lot and it's got me wondering. Is it fair to say they're probably functioning alcoholics? Not necessarily Kevin but definitely Liz and Meg... 🤔

Don’t know where they get the energy for the socialising!

LoveShitJokes · 20/11/2022 18:55

Same! I love a good drink myself and a bit of socialising but that episode where Meg pretty much forces everyone to go on a massive session then ends up falling down the stairs inside a bus? I kind of get the impression that was a Monday or Tuesday night.

Fuck that. I'm in bed by 9pm!

I think I’m trying to live my life through them and really need to cut down on the wine!

Bad Sisters, Workin Moms and Catastrophe are the same.

Got to say I was really disappointed when it said new series on Netflix when it’s not really!

worldsoyster · 20/11/2022 19:05

I love motherland but there’s a lot of mid week socialising that I don’t have the energy for so it’s good live through them.
I remember characters like these from the school gates who probably were functioning alcoholics looking back .

Speedweed · 20/11/2022 19:15

Yep, agree. It's that funny thing where female characters are always presented drinking wine, with apparently no hangover or ill effects.

Whereas the reality is you have to be a masochist to care for children with even a small hangover.

Alighttouchonthetiller · 20/11/2022 19:19

It is possible to drink more than a few units a week and not be a ‘functioning alcoholic’.

Plus it’s pretend. It’s not a documentary.

midsomermurderess · 20/11/2022 19:19

There are so many programmes now where people come in the door and immediately pour a glass of wine or are drinking wine alone, not getting plastered but working through a bottle, all of which would have raised eyebrows a few years ago. It does normalise a fairly large amount of frequent drinking.

clockapp · 20/11/2022 19:27

It's not real you do know that right?

Fuck, seriously? 🙄

We must all be grateful for your clarification.

But that was the whole point of that episode wasn’t it, that Meg is loud and lairy and that the ‘normal’ parents couldn’t keep up with her?

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 20/11/2022 19:49

I love a midweek wine and don't get a hangover from it.

I've just discovered the show and find it uncannily relatable.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 20/11/2022 19:55

It is an genuine issue with these sort of TV programs whereby things that happen in real life are just glossed over or omitted.

I remember in Lassie, she'd be running home to tell Timmy that someone had fallen over and broken their leg and they were lying on a railway line, but never stopped to sniff a tree or take a poo and then run off in a different direction because there was a big puddle to lie in.

It rather spoilt it for me. At least with Flipper you knew where you were.

BocolateChiscuits · 20/11/2022 20:06

Women on TV drink so much wine. They're forever coming home from work and drinking wine, or cooking and drinking wine, or chatting with friends and drinking wine, or doing something on a laptop and drinking wine, or having a bath and drinking wine.

It all looks a bit weird to me - but I don't drink, so what do I know 🤷‍♀️

Love Motherland so much. Especially the theme music, I hunted it out on SoundCloud 😁m.soundcloud.com/olijulian/motherland-theme

I thought so! It was basically about how they'd all need to be tucked up in bed early on a school night, wasn't it?

Soscrewed · 20/11/2022 20:10

There is quite a bit of drinking on tv shows and sometimes I wonder what is normal. I drink maybe 10 times a year and I can't remember the last time I was more than tipsy, certainly before kids. But my father (and brother now) was an alcoholic so I know I'm super paranoid about alcohol and probably not "normal".

Is it normal to drink a few nights a week? I don't know. It is something I too have really noticed.

Grin Excellent comment!

Me too. I love trumpets.

With Motherland, it’s easy to get distracted by all the relatable parts, like waiting at the school gate in a Uniqlo puffer; and forget that it’s a tv programme full of mad things, like basing your entire social circle around the school mums who live in a 0.25 mile radius.

DorritLittle · 20/11/2022 20:20

But people their age do generally drink a lot.

Also agree that the whole point of the Meg episode was that they were roped into it. Julia wanted to be sat watching Holby in her baggy sweatshirt eating yoghurt!

SheCameRoundAMountain · 20/11/2022 20:21

I only get proper tipsy when my dc are at their dad's, eow. Can't drink in the week due to evening clubs / child ferrying, and I don't want an even mild headache on a Saturday/Sunday morning when I'm woken at 6am by a small child emanating large noises.

I'm usually in bed by about 9.30 with a cup of mint tea. 🥱

lollipoprainbow · 20/11/2022 20:22

@BocolateChiscuits I'm getting that for my phone ringtone !

PMSL 🤣
Good one!

Highfivemum · 20/11/2022 20:40

I don’t care if they are or are not. I love love love the programme. An exaggeration of the truth as a mum. So yes they do drink to much but the whole show is exaggerated and that is what makes it great. I bet we all know one of the characters at the school gates ? I sure do. Long may the show continue.

Stardustkid · 20/11/2022 20:43

It also moves on quite a bit so I kind of see it as maybe 6 drinking sessions over a year perfectly reasonable
