Motherland - functioning alcoholics?

Now I LOVE Motherland and with the exception of Meg (who is far too full on for introverted little me) I would love to be friends with the gang.

But they seem to drink a lot and it's got me wondering. Is it fair to say they're probably functioning alcoholics? Not necessarily Kevin but definitely Liz and Meg... 🤔

My kids are older now but I do remember quite a bit of boozing in pre pandemic primary school years. Prosecco and crisps in the park, glass of wine when picking up kids from a Tuesday play date etc etc.

I also live somewhere where primary catchments are tiny and so we really were all within around a kilometre.

I think we drank too much tbh. Peri menopause did that in for me,

I don’t care if they are or are not. I love love love the programme. An exaggeration of the truth as a mum. So yes they do drink to much but the whole show is exaggerated and that is what makes it great. I bet we all know one of the characters at the school gates ? I sure do. Long may the show continue.

Same! I love it and as someone who is worried about her own weekly units it's kind of reassuring that maybe drinking too much wine is more common than I thought! 🙈

Love Motherland! The bit that stuck out to me was Meg saying she'll bring the 'beans' to their cottage holiday, and Liz pointing out to Anne that she meant drugs. Like is everyone just casually doing pills on a country weekend with kids in tow 😂

FayeGovan · 20/11/2022 21:21

Love motherland too

I've only just realised how much I love Anne, watching it now... "Kevin banged Amanda at the back of Hygge Tygge!!!"

Her facial expression afterwards LOOK how happy she is! 🤣

Its not real. Its a bit of fun, tongue in cheek.

Anne is amazing.

But Meg is an exaggerated character. And I don't think their lifestyles are meant to be aspirational- that's the point - they all have issues. I think they are also meant to show a relatively broad range of person from the posh sahm to the working mum to the single mum on benefits. It's fun!

geraniumsandsunshine · 21/11/2022 12:51

And it's one of the very few things that actually makes me laugh properly. I do like working moms too but that's a bit more edgy and the Australian one (The letdown) was a bit too real and not funny when you actually have a small baby although probably good contraception

I am always amazed by MN threads on alcohol. It must be the largest group of responsible drinkers /teetotallers on one forum .

My kids are all grown now but I can't recall a single abstemious kids-friend parent across 7 kids in 20 years.. almost without exception a pick up from a play date included a chat with an offer of a glass of wine .. (I will concede this was evening pick ups - not mornings ! )

Maybe it's a rural/mc southerner trait but over the years it has definitely increased . One mum friend was still on the the 'single glass of red' but the glass had increased in size to hold 3/4 bottle !

LoveShitJokes · 21/11/2022 19:52

I'd love to be in a gang of friends like that. All local, all comfortable telling each other to fuck off, having a laugh getting pissed and just being there for each other with no dramas or pressure just loads in common and no judging. I think it's bloody great ❤️
