What did you earn at 40? Trying to make a realistic plan for the future. Had my children so no childcare/ mat leave/ part time working to take into account.

£70k but then I moved up north from london and my salary dropped to £35k!

Woolandwonder · 20/11/2022 13:17

22k. Chronic illness means I am only work p/t now.

TitInATrance · 20/11/2022 13:18

I earned the equivalent of that in real terms at 35, hadn’t increased much by retirement from the same role.
May or may not be due to my career going on hold/stalling when I became a single parent.

LunaLoveLemon · 20/11/2022 13:21

Surely it depends on your field?

I’m top end of band 6 in the nhs so earn 40k but if I wanted to earn more, I would have to take on a level of responsibility that frankly doesn’t seem worth it, and I would have to work for years to eventually get to 47k or apply for a matron/managers role that looks nothing like what I do currently. Basically I’m stuck at 40k unless I want to make my life miserable 😂 (I’m actually about to take a pay cut so I can move into another area and have less stress)

Overthebow · 20/11/2022 13:21

I earned around £40k when I was 30, and a few years later I now earn £54k. I should earn £65-70k by the time I’m 40.

Surely though it’s entirety dependent on your career so what others have earned by that age won’t be relevant to your situation?

GorgeousLadyofWrestling · 20/11/2022 13:23

There’s really no correlation between age increasing and salary increasing.

At 30 I earned £35k. Then I had 3 children and was half a SAHM and half freelanced. At 42, I have been back in full time permanent work since 39 and I earn £85.

Stayed doing what I am doing but moved sectors and was given a couple of big pay rises in quick succession.

LimeSupper · 20/11/2022 13:24

I was earning 42k at age 30 and now at age 33 I’m earning 61k. I never could’ve predicted the opportunities I have had and now I’m aspiring to a role that would bet circa 100k - hopefully by age 40 but who really knows. We live up North and it’s a lot of money to us.

Cuddlywuddlies · 20/11/2022 13:25

This is field and age (as in the year a person is 40) graduates in my field start on 40k (age 22/23)

ThereishopeafterAll · 20/11/2022 13:30

75k by 37 - my goal is 100k by 42
I live just outside London though and have childcare costs and old debts to clear off, so it doesn't go as far as you might think

Whataretheodds · 20/11/2022 13:30

I earned £55k at 40, £90k at 40, i plateaued career-wise, stayed with the same company moving sideways when i should have moved company, and failed to translate my hard work and long hours into a promotion.

If I were giving advice I'd say move every 1-3 years, find your niche and get good at telling people what youre going to do, abd and telling them that you've done it.

LivingOnAPrayerYes · 20/11/2022 13:32

Earned slightly more than 40k at age 30, 50k at age 35 and set to earn 10k at age 40 next year.

^not a typo!

So no idea how that impacts your earnings. Surely it completely depends on your work. A teacher will reach a ceiling usually around 50k unless they become a head teacher of a large school, whereas someone on 40k at 30 in financial services or IT may have the opportunity to be at 100k plus

Robinredred · 20/11/2022 13:32

I should have said I work as a paraplanner for a bank. I don’t really want to go into giving advice myself. So hopefully I will have some progression although not sure what yet.

I’m not 40 for a few more years but it should be £65k ish FTE by then (I only work part time).

Fleur405 · 20/11/2022 13:39

I earned 32k at 30 and now earn 80k at 41 (having taken mat leave x 2)

FunnysInLaJardin · 20/11/2022 13:39

I earned about £45k at 30. I am now 51 and if full time would earn about £80k. I am a solicitor

Lndnmummy · 20/11/2022 13:56

£110k

GiantWotsit · 20/11/2022 13:56

I earned £40k.at 30 and at 40 earned £105k. Same company, just a number of promotions over that time.

MintJulia · 20/11/2022 13:57

£70k but that was for an international job, 20 years ago.

GetOffTheRoof · 20/11/2022 14:00

I was on about £40k with massive and frequent overtime. I'm now on £32k after taking a massive and deliberate cut for a better quality of life. So much less stress!!

Dontaskdontget · 20/11/2022 14:05

I earned £80k at 30, £35k at 32, and now earn nothing. I think I’m doing something wrong 🤔

Lurkerlot · 20/11/2022 14:08

According to a calculator I was on £52k. But it was in London, type of industry I worked in was extremely social, and lots of cash splashed on networking in private member’s bars and such like. Outgoings were high.

In depends what you want from life. In 2006 I took stock, and a massive pay cut, I changed industry, left London, and my friends. I found myself less well paid, having loads of spare cash, a 20 minute car ride commute, and now I’m mortgage free, and Planning for my early retirement.

Rudolphscarrot · 20/11/2022 14:12

When I turned 30 I was on £32. I'm now 37 and have just been offered a job for £42500 (although I'm now part time so that amount will be pro rated). I've had 2 kids and a sort of career break in that time though.

Grumpycatsmum · 20/11/2022 14:14

£80k at 30. £20k at 40. £62k at 50. Now at about £80k again.

GristleToesAndWhine · 20/11/2022 14:17

whirlyhead · 20/11/2022 13:15

£70k but then I moved up north from london and my salary dropped to £35k!

Similar.

I earned 70k at 30.

I earned 125k at 37.

I left London and chose an easier job and am now 42 and earn 70k again. My point being, it can be very hard to plan future earnings because life and your decisions may alter it dramatically.

Paq · 20/11/2022 14:20

Between 30 and 40 I had a baby, changed sectors and there was a final financial crash, so my earnings were pretty stagnant. Between 40 and 50 it was a much better story.
