What did you earn at 40? Trying to make a realistic plan for the future. Had my children so no childcare/ mat leave/ part time working to take into account.

If we are just talking basic
At 30 40K
At 40 55K
At 50 115k
At 57 132k

I would say I am now ready to wind down. More importantly is ensuring you are saving in your pension that dictates when you retire. I could retire now if I wanted to or if anything happened to my job. I have been made redundant 3 times in my career. So have needed to bounce back each time.

AperolWhore · 20/11/2022 14:28

45k full time at 30, now 36 and on 60k plus 20k bonuses working a 4 day week.

I work in a very male dominated industry and have worked my ass off to get this.

Meltingsocks · 20/11/2022 14:32

42k at 30
90k at 40

olivehater · 20/11/2022 14:35

Doesn’t it depend on your kind of work? I earned 40k at 30 and don’t earn much more now as I work for the NHS and it’s practically impossible me to go any higher in the field I am in.

jackstini · 20/11/2022 14:42

At 29 it was £23k, got poached by a similar company
At 30 I then earned £31k, but it was 20 years ago
At 32 it went to £45k - poached again
Then up to around £85k until I was 48 - redundancy due to Covid

Now self employed and varies from £70k to double that. More work, but very flexible

mamabeeboo · 20/11/2022 16:19

At 30, I was on £43k.
Just starting a new job now at 32, and I'll be on £65k

bloodyeverlastinghell · 20/11/2022 16:23

23K I had twins and gave up work as I was a sleep deprived mess. Got back into work but for the council which is flexible and easy so I can pick up DC and do activities and make up the time.

Jenasaurus · 20/11/2022 16:27

Doesnt always work like that, I earnt 24k at 30 and now at 57 earn 32k so not good but I work for the NHS now, when I was 30, 24k was quite a good wage for a receptionist.

My DS at 20 earned 20k and now at 29 he earns 55k but he retrained and took his career into a different route. He wants to earn 100k by the time he is 40, but not sure how realistic that is.

BigBunkers · 20/11/2022 16:27

I earned £53k at 30 and halfway to 40 I earn close to 6 figures but I’ve been promoted twice since 30

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 20/11/2022 16:28

Ha ha! I thought it had made it at age when I was earning £20k!

I’m 40 now on £45k

Same as you on this one, work for NHS and its all banded scales, I would need to move up a band to earn more

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 20/11/2022 16:28

Ha ha! I thought it had made it at age when I was earning £20k!

I’m 40 now on £45k

The difference is for me at 30 I had a mortgage that ate my money, so at 57 and mortgage free my earnings go further

Workawayxx · 20/11/2022 16:30

I earned 38k and up to £5k bonus at 30 then the eurozone crisis hit (I worked in a small publishing company) and I earned £30k fte (£18k pt salary for 3 days p/w) by 40. Not the direction I hoped for 🤔😣.

GlasgowGal82 · 20/11/2022 16:43

I earned about £40K when I was 30 and I am now 40 and I earn about £40K 😂

In the last the years I have had one promotion and a sideways step job change and I dropped to PT (0.8FTE) so FT I would be earning more like £50K, however with public sector pay freezes for much of the past decade I sometimes feel like my salary flatlined at 29!

Robinredred · 20/11/2022 18:12

All these posts are making me realise it’s not always linear and improving salary overtime. Thanks everyone.
I think I need more of a plan. I would like to earn more - but not sure how to get there yet.
If anyone has worked as a paraplanner (financial advice report writing) and has managed to increase their earning potential, please let me know how.

Not much more as it was top of my band, many jobs are like this and have a ceiling

Lozzybear · 20/11/2022 18:20

At 30 I earned £28k but I’d only just qualified into my profession. At 46 I earn £80k.

Classical24 · 20/11/2022 18:23

I'm currently 26 and earning equivalent to £38k. Basic is £26,500 (sales). Would like to be earning around £50k when 30, but with the current climate, it appears very difficult to get a well payed job (for me anyway)

WonderingWanda · 20/11/2022 18:30

£25k because I went part time after kids

Baconand · 20/11/2022 18:30

Less, because I now get £42k for part time. But it’s about £54k FTE

SmellyNelliey · 20/11/2022 18:31

I dont work I'm a sahm but my partner whos 25 earns 52,000 a year next year I also will be going into his line of work.

WonderingWanda · 20/11/2022 18:32

I'm a teacher and if I was full time it would be the same as it was when I was 30 because I'm at the top of the upper pay scale. Can't really get promoted to leadership while part time so am stuck.

RobinRobinMouse · 20/11/2022 18:33

At 25 I earned 25k (seemed a lot at the time) , then we moved countries several times and had a child and I now do a completely different job part time and earn very little. I am happy as it works around school for my little one and means I can spend holidays etc with her. Not sure how long they will keep me on for as it's in a school and the government seem determined to underfund them, but I'm taking each day as it comes.

Kimmicat · 20/11/2022 18:36

Well I’m 40 next year, I work full time in a school and I come out with 14k a year!!
I love it but clearly I’m in the wrong sector

healthadvice123 · 20/11/2022 19:40

I was earning £18 k at 23 now at 47 im earning £23 k
Change of career , having kids , moving down to south west have all meant I earn less in real terms, but I have a job with good work life balance and I could go up and earn more but I don't actually want to
