Dropped sterilised teat on floor of cafe…

babyteh · 20/11/2022 10:05

And my other half didn’t realise and used the same one to feed our three day old. I’m exhausted and now terrified. Do I need to call midwife or anything? First time mum, I know this is my fault

Oh bless you: no need to call midwife unless your baby is unwell. They will in all likelihood be absolutely fine.

Congratulations

clary · 20/11/2022 10:06

It’s fine OP I promise. You do need to sterilise feeding equipment, but not anything else. In eight months’ time they will be crawling around and licking the pram wheels.

I'm so sorry, just reread your post and saw baby had already been fed using the teat. Try not to worry. Any potential symptoms can be dealt with if they occur.

sidsgranny · 20/11/2022 10:07

It will be fine, please don't worry. Congratulations on your little one!

mynameiscalypso · 20/11/2022 10:09

I took the view that sterilisation was mainly to do with formula and making sure that any leftover powder in the bottle was safe. Every day dirt was less of an issue. DS is 3 and thriving. Congratulations on your baby.

babyteh · 20/11/2022 10:10

Thank you!! Felt absolutely horrendous! What should I look out for with being unwell? Just going off food etc? It’s my fault as didn’t tell dp quick enough and he just cracked on!

The reason you sterilise teats and bottles is because of the formula residue possibly left in them.

It's why you don't sterilise breast milk bottles, or anything else your baby uses.

You don't want to keep them away from germs as that will make their immune system crap.

Your lovely new baby will be just fine.

Congratulations! Flowers

Shouldbedoing · 20/11/2022 10:15

Plus your baby has your immunity at this age

Twizbe · 20/11/2022 10:17

Baby will be fine. It's not your fault either. These things happen.

For future if it helps you, Milton do sterilising wipes for when you're out and about and things like this happen. I used them lots to wipe down high chairs in cafes lol.

MelchiorsMistress · 20/11/2022 10:19

It’s fine, don’t worry. You will know about it if your baby gets unwell. It’s still very early days so if a call to your midwife will reassure you then call.

Remember there are plenty of healthy people around the world that were successfully raised without any sterilisation facilities.

Congratulations 💐

mynameiscalypso · 20/11/2022 10:20

If your baby were to get I'll - which I very much doubt they will - I'd bet it would be nothing more than a particularly disgusting poo.

Bells3032 · 20/11/2022 10:22

As everyone else said she will be fine. Sterilising is about the bacteria in formula not making things clean. A few second on thr floor won't hurt her... If worried just keep an eye on her for the next 24 hours and if concerned call doctor but I think it's unlikely

Bells3032 · 20/11/2022 10:22

Ps not your fault. These things happen to everyone

YellowCarChampion · 20/11/2022 10:25

Don't worry OP, as previous posts have said the main aim of sterilisation is to make sure the milk and bottles aren't harbouring bacteria from the formula and are safe for the baby. Your baby will honestly be fine.

You can get sterilising wipes in Boots for bottles etc and I had a spray bottle of sterilising water that I bought in Jojo Maman Bebe (but is almost certainly cheaper elsewhere!) that I used in emergencies when out with my baby. She will now happily eat food off the floor and even once licked bird poo off my car door as a toddler 🤢 It was rank but she was fine.

MrsMontyD · 20/11/2022 10:26

You wouldn't sterilise your nipple if you were breast feeding, it's easy to get obsessive with these things with your first, it'll be absolutely fine.

You don't need to sterilise breast milk bottles?

I didn't know this.

When mine eventually took a bottle I didn't bother (I used to sterilise pump and storage bottles etc)

It concerns me how many people don’t even know why they’re sterilising things.

perhaps if people knew they’d take more care in their bottle prep too and not add formula to cool water.
i remember telling a friend it was pointless she was sterilising her babies bottles to the point she wouldn’t touch the teat but was prepping formula by using cool water.

Bunnycat101 · 20/11/2022 10:40

Yes agree with others you don’t need to worry. The sterilisation is for the residue milk. you baby will soon be sucking fingers, putting all sorts of rubbish in their mouth etc. it does feel so overwhelming when you’re knackered and they are so tiny and helpless but please don’t beat yourself up about this. There will always be something to worry about and you can’t be prefect all of the time.

WakingUpDistress · 20/11/2022 11:09

1- your baby will be fine. Babies don’t need to live in a sterile environment.
2- it’s not your fault. It’s your DP. Your role isn’t to look after baby AND check on your DP to be sure he isn’t making any mistakes. Your DP, as the father, should have learnt about not reusing stuff that has ended in the floor. Not your role to parent him.

jamoncrumpets · 20/11/2022 11:10

If it happens again you can run it under the hot tap with a bit of soap, rinse, dry. It'll be fine.

Sprogonthetyne · 20/11/2022 11:17

It's fine, your baby will put alsorts in their mouth in time, and even now is probably touching you then putting their hands in their mouth. Bacteria is going to gey to baby one way or another, you can't stop it and shouldn't try. The reason to sterilise bottles is the risk from the particular type of bacteria that multiplying in old milk that can be dangerous, not to stop all germs. Most bacteria on a cafe floor will actually be fine, or at least no worse then anything else you touch.

I mean this kindly, but get an effing grip.

Do you remember being on day 3 of having a new baby? I remember crying all day. I couldn't get an effing grip about anything.
