I love this idea and it seems to be increasingly popular.

At about 9.15 am this morning I put out a camping chair, some carpet tiles and a large plastic bowl. All gone by 10.00 am.

DH came home with a couple of books last week.

What have you given away or found?

I found a pink floor lamp with working bulb

QueenOfWeeds · 19/11/2022 14:55

We have given away books, and some plant pots I ordered online which were the wrong size but couldn’t be returned. They went in the time it took me to make a cup of tea!

I hadn’t come across it until I moved in with DH, but I think it’s brilliant, as long as people take things in at the end of the day <glares at next door>.

AppleCreamSlice · 19/11/2022 14:56

I've not seen this, how does it work? Do you just set up a table and write 'Free' on it?

FourChimneys · 19/11/2022 14:56

That's a great find. Do you use it?

Our neighbours put out some good quality outgrown toys last year. They went quickly and the next day they found a box of chocolates on the step with a note saying Thank you for the toys.

We got rid of a scooter that way.

Winterfellismyhome · 19/11/2022 14:57

Our neighbour gave away a rocking unicorn. Im going to give it a wash and a fresh coat of paint and it'll be DDs birthday present

FourChimneys · 19/11/2022 14:58

Apple If it's lots of bits then people might put up a table. But often it's just put on the drive or wall. Yes, usually a note saying FREE or PLEASE TAKE.

Thanks, I might try it! (When the rain settles ...)

Winter that's amazing, your DD will love it.

I do this all the time as it saves me going to the tip (where they would grab the stuff to resell) or to a charity shop.

I have also put a sign on expensive items asking for people to pop a £10/20 in the letter box and every time people have paid when taking the item even though it is clear we wouldn't see if they took it without paying.

lightand · 19/11/2022 15:02

A relative I know put out two things, with the take for free.
Few hours later one had gone and one hadnt.
I asked if I could take the remaining one[I had been helping her move house]. She said yes.

IcanandIwill · 19/11/2022 15:05

A few outgrown scooters and some garden toys! Thankfully our road is a popular walk to a nature reserve with plenty of passers by. Sundays are fab for putting stuff out.

StaceySolomonSwash · 19/11/2022 15:05

A lawnmower. It was still plugged in though. 😎

RandomUsernameHere · 19/11/2022 15:07

I've never thought of doing this! I always just advertise free stuff on Facebook and it always goes.

Bloatstoat · 19/11/2022 15:08

Someone round the corner from us regularly put things out on a folding table, which worked well until the table was taken too 😂They had to put a message on the local Facebook group asking for it back.

Penguinsaregreat · 19/11/2022 15:09

I gave away a working tv, toys, garden chairs and table.
I downsized so it had to go.
I usually get plants for free.

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 19/11/2022 15:13

We do this, biggest thing we gave away was a drum kit my husband finally agreed to let go of. I didn't have time to list it for sale, he might have changed his mind! It was gone within 5 minutes.

BMW6 · 19/11/2022 15:13

Happens a lot around here and has for years. I've had a large perspex sheet which made an ideal lid for a cold frame, have left out old but working vacuum cleaner, saucepans, CD's and DVD's.

FourChimneys · 19/11/2022 15:13

BloatStoat our neighbour attaches his table to the gatepost with a bike lock.

Stacey that's horrible, did you find out who did it?

This is well-established in my area. I have passed on so much stuff this way. I love it, so much easier than Freecycle and obviously better than having to throw it out. I have put out a trampoline, desks, chairs, books, toys, plant pots, scooters, crockery, shelves and even paint tester pots!

Facecream · 19/11/2022 15:18

Yes! I do this. I used to live on the main road in our village and I’ve given away at least 100 books that way, a working stereo system x2, toys…
We collected a beautiful Victorian coat stand (that won’t match our shitty current house but will once we get the renovations done).

Garysmum · 19/11/2022 15:19

My uncle downsized from a large house. Every day for a few weeks he left assorted items in boxes near the road - kitchen equipment, cutlery, crockery, lamps, vases, rugs, bed linen, books, the odd item of furniture, ornaments etc. nothing antique or that special- few bits could have sold on eBay. Someone asked if it was okay to take early on, uncle said yes - he came several times and was very grateful.
I suppose a charity shop missed out but overall unwanted items found new homes and didn’t get tipped as they might have done otherwise.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 19/11/2022 15:20

I recently helped my parents empty 40 years worth of stuff out of their house so they could move away.
A good amount of that was put on the end of the drive for people to take. The nicest day was when I put out a boxed kenwood mixer with all the extras, nipped out to the shop and when I came back I saw a woman with two young children carrying it up the road with the biggest smile on her face!

MassiveSalad22 · 19/11/2022 15:22

Fairly common around here - I put out baskets of toys and books if the weather is ok every now and then. Also recently got rid of some storage boxes and a coat stand thing.
Couldn’t have done it in our old house in the same neighbourhood, as no one came past, but now we’re on a good road for passing traffic!
DS’ first food was some cooking apples I took from a please-take box outside a neighbour’s house.

MadKittenWoman · 19/11/2022 15:26

We do this round our way. Any items left on the wall or next to the gate are for taking. Nearly walked off with a mirror that some people had left next to the gate when they were moving in (not aware of local culture) and returned it to them when saw them walking down the road with a table. Some visitors of ours left some sleeping bags on our wall when they were packing the car to leave and were outraged to find them gone!
