The Giving Tree
The Sad Story (I think its called this. Might not be a kids book! By Michael Rose)

AxolotlEars · 18/11/2022 18:08

So so many! The Christmas miracle of Jonathan Toomey, When Jesse came over the sea, The worst/best Christmas pageant to name a few

MissCherryFruits · 18/11/2022 18:10

For older children but "goodnight mister Tom" and "back home" make my cry no matter how many times I read them.

’I’ll love you forever’ - I used to read that to my DS when he was baby (now 12) the mum was a bit of a stalker in the book but it made me cry so many times … ‘I’ll love you forever, I’ll like you for always, as long as I’m living, my baby you’ll be…. ‘’. Arrghh welling up! Need wine !

We have one called ‘kicking a ball’ and both dh and I well up when we read it to our boys. It’s just a classic one of those reflections of childhood through the eyes of an adult, and it makes me ache with sadness in anticipation that one day we will look back so fondly on these days.

Catnuzzle · 18/11/2022 18:14

Wibbly pig and his silly big bear, ends with 'and when he is gone, we will miss him more than anyone' tears and goosebumps every time.

Hernamewaslola1 · 18/11/2022 18:15

Giraffes can dance! Such a beautiful story

Oblomov22 · 18/11/2022 18:17

I haven't read most of these! How did I miss all this good stuff? Making notes.

I remember trying to tell a colleague the plot of The Velveteen Rabbit and having to stop due to getting choked up...

There's one called Nothing about a lost toy that also kills me.

Toys must be my kryptonite...

’Nothing’ is absolutely lovely. Mick Inkpen.

The Mousehole Cat always made me cry, and a book called The Mudmaid that my parents bought DD from the Lost Gardens of Heligan. It’s the adult perspective of knowing WHY the gardeners suddenly leave and never return.

Goodbye Mog … never read it, the Amazon description made me cry.

Guess How Much I Love You ~ Sam McBratney 😭

Georgeskitchen · 18/11/2022 18:20

Anything involving Rupert the bear. Not because the storylines are particularly sad, I just love the little band of animal friends, beautifully drawn, and reminds me of happy times as a child, and happy times when my own children were little ❤

trebarwith1 · 18/11/2022 18:28

oh paper dolls...the lovely granny in the girls memory. I read this book to my daughter after i lost my mum and her lovely granny. So poignant. An amazing book

raspberrycordial · 18/11/2022 18:30

Grandad's island, I can't even read the last pages without choking up

MadameSzyszkoBohusz · 18/11/2022 18:31

You Were The First. My cousin got it for my DD when I was pregnant with her little brother, and now I get it for all the little first borns I know when they're about to become the eldest:

"You were the first...to teach us how to be parents.
One day there may be a second - or a third - to sleep in the basket with the blue ribbon on it.
But you will always be the first."

I choked up just typing that.

Alacarde · 18/11/2022 18:34

'Daniel Duck Moves House'. I read it as a small child and cried when his new house fell down, and I still feel sad if I read it now.

thepawofdislike · 18/11/2022 18:36

'Nothing' by Mick Inkpen. So beautiful and sad but with a glorious happy ending!

TheHauntedPencilCase · 18/11/2022 18:40

Paper dolls. Bought a JD set and wasn't expecting it....proper cried (not a crier) and couldn't get through it. Never read it since but my oldest did it at school and the artwork brought it back. Horrific book.

TheHauntedPencilCase · 18/11/2022 18:41

Why am I reading this post it's made me cry!

Cookie79 · 18/11/2022 18:43

Grumpy Cat - just something about a lonely old grumpy cat and a little kitten refusing to give up on him 😫

Chasingclouds100 · 18/11/2022 18:43

TheaBrandt · 18/11/2022 16:17

Flipping Dogger. Couldn’t get through that without crying

@Cookie79 I love Grumpy Cat!

The saddest one I know is called Badger's parting gifts, about a badger that dies of old age.

MissyB1 · 18/11/2022 18:47

Alfie’s Christmas (Shirley Hughes), it’s just too beautiful and makes me nostalgic.

WonderingWanda · 18/11/2022 18:47

The Lorax gets me

Rosebud100 · 18/11/2022 18:49

Snail and the whale 😭
