Bed changing & washing… how?!

Myeyeballsareonfire · 17/11/2022 08:54

We are a family of 6 (4 children). 2 eldest DC have single beds, 3rd has a double, 4th is co sleeping. We (the adults) have a king size.

There are plenty of changes of bed clothes for the single beds, but we only really have one set of bed clothes for the double/kings.

I cannot figure out how people are managing to change beds weekly! Please tell me how?!

As it stands we do at least 1 full load of washing daily. With very changeable weather conditions here, the tumble dryer is also used frequently.

Bedsheets for each of the bigger beds are a full load each.

The ‘eco’ wash on our machine takes over 5 hours (absolutely insane, but there we are!), and then there’s drying time to factor in.

How the heck are people finding the time to change weekly?!

is it shorter cycles? More bedclothes? Lies?

We have two sets for each bed. We take one off and put a fresh one on.

PuttingDownRoots · 17/11/2022 08:56

Do you somewhere nearby with the massive macines/driers? I'd be tempted to take them there every couple of weeks in winter...

Activelyannoyed · 17/11/2022 08:57

Sorry also we have one child. You’re a large family. We don’t do eco cycles.

Two sets of linen for each bed - I agree it would be crazy/impossible to try and get them all washed, dried and back on in one day in this house too.

Notsympatheticenough · 17/11/2022 08:57

we’ve got 2 sets for each bed. Can’t see how you’d do it otherwise.

Roundlampshade · 17/11/2022 08:57

We have three sets of bedding for each bed.

mondaytosunday · 17/11/2022 08:59

I don't change weekly! If children are wearing pjs it seems excessive. Every other week is fine. And buy yourself another set of sheets - at least the pillowcases and fitted sheets. I wash them more frequently than the duvet covers.
Next time you buy a machine get the largest capacity. And consider a dryer.

LabradorEyes · 17/11/2022 08:59

I have 3 sets and I live alone. I think you need more sets

ApolloandDaphne · 17/11/2022 09:00

Several sets of bedding and only change every two weeks.

Jaffacakeorisitabiscuit · 17/11/2022 09:00

All of the above!

We have 2 sets of bedding for all beds - IKEA do some nice ones, usually some will be on sale.

I dropped from weekly wash to 10 - 14 days. Hasn't made a difference to how the beds feel/smell Grin. Keep an eye on the forecast to try and wash bedding when there's a chance to hang stuff out for a few hours (but don't have the number of beds you do so can fit stuff on the line).

We have a top loader so no 'eco' setting per se - even a heavy wash is only about 40 minutes but I can fill machine and leave stuff to soak for half an hour.

Spin dryer to remove excess moisture helps too - I get a couple of litres extra out of each load even after the washing machines fastest spin.

2 sets for each bed. That's the only way for us! We have 1 king bed, and 3 cots (plus a Moses basket) and I try and change all the beds on the same day as it's a task I despise! 😂

caffelattetogo · 17/11/2022 09:01

Yes, multiple sets for each bed. If you haven't got anywhere to store them, layer them on the beds with mattress protectors between, then strip each one off when you need to.

Yourloss · 17/11/2022 09:01

Don’t do it weekly unless you have to for a start.

gianfrancogorgonzola · 17/11/2022 09:01

two sets for each bed and change fortnightly not weekly. we are only four - six is a lot of people!

WalkingOnAcorns · 17/11/2022 09:02

2 sets for each bed, all white so any pillowcase will do. That works for us

Yourloss · 17/11/2022 09:02

Plus you can get basic duvet covers and sheets eg Argos.

Cafenero35 · 17/11/2022 09:03

This came up in work recently and everyone was saying “every week” or the odd “every two weeks” then one of the girls said “about every three months” Maybe try that approach

IntrovertedPenguin · 17/11/2022 09:03

I wash them in the morning when I get up, they are dry by afternoon. Never had an issue.

Beachhutnut · 17/11/2022 09:03

We have two sets per bed so have a week to wash the dirty ones. Either that or you could designate one day for bedsheets only in the washing machine (don't use the eco setting for this wash it uses less energy but much more water usually). Strip the beds first thing bung a wash on, dry that after work and wash the next load while load one is drying. Alternatively wash the sheets from bed 1 on Monday, bed 2 on Tuesday etc and fit other laundry loads in in the evenings.

RoseLemon · 17/11/2022 09:03

Don't change every week, if people are showering regularly, wearing pjs etc there's no need and it will save you money (and the planet). You're just making things hard for yourself. (Would def be easier to have more sets of bedding but money or storage may be a factor for you).

Athenen0ctua · 17/11/2022 09:04

We change beds four weekly, one at a time. Back up set for each bed but they usually dry in a day.

SalviaOfficinalis · 17/11/2022 09:04

Definitely need more than one set.
And don’t do them all weekly.

polycotton dries quicker than pure cotton.

toomuchlaundry · 17/11/2022 09:04

Some people use a top sheet underneath the duvet so you don’t need to wash the duvet cover so often

Dragonskin · 17/11/2022 09:04

We have multiple sets of bedclothes for each bed

Tubbyinthehottub · 17/11/2022 09:04

I nearly always put the same set back on as I can't be bothered folding and storing. I don't use the eco setting much because it takes hours. I wash the bedding, half tumble it and then hang it over the landing bannister to finish drying off. No ironing.
