Come with me back to 1984...

I don't know whether it's simply nostalgia or whether as you get older you are able to see the past more clearly, but I was 14 in 1984 and I was simply in love with Eden by Everything but the girl ( massively underrated album!) The Unforgettable Fire by U2, The Smiths first LP had just come out, Brilliant Trees by David Sylvian- Rattlesnakes by Lloyd Coke and the commotions, Hatful of Hollow (remember waiting outside OurPrice in Hammersmith for that one!)

I was wearing DMs and dyeing my Levi's black because I couldn't find any in the shops, cutting sleeves off my brother's shirts and buying studded belts from Kensington Market. Taping The Tube on Friday nights before going out to meet my friends.
Free festivals in London Parks in the summers, saw so many great bands between 84-86. The Pogues, The Men they couldn't hang, The Boothill Foottappers, The Style Council, The Frank Chickens, The Communards...

Was just thinking about those years and wondering what other people's memories were of those years... no judgement here !

Used to see loads of bands at these venues.

The Clarendon Hammersmith
The Fulham Greyhound
The Bull & Gate Kentish Town
The Mean Fiddler Harlesden

Also The Rock Garden in Covent Garden.

Nolongerteaching · 17/11/2022 15:56

The Mean Fiddler was the best. - used to run Reading festival too which was like 3 days at the MF pub!

The Clarendon - yep
Kilburn Ballroom, too

Hammersmith Palais and Apollo?

Some places on Charing Cross Rd?

LadyOfTheCanyon · 17/11/2022 16:15

The Marquee was on Charing Cross road.

The Festival I'm thinking of was the " Jobs for a change " GLC ones in Battersea Park. But I've just looked it up and it was the 1985 one I went to, not the 1984 one. We saw The Pogues, the Communards, Ravi Shankar, Billy Bragg ( obviously, I think you used to get a Billy Bragg EP with every copy of the Socialist Worker back then) The Redskins, pretty sure The Style Council were there. It was the whole Red Wedge lot. Ken Livingstone gave a speech, we were delirious with hope, really thought we were about to change the world...

Red Wedge. Definitely Weller.

mad time, wasn’t it? I was only young but knew that musically it was something special. I loved the festivals - atmosphere was great as I remember.

MrsMoastyToasty · 17/11/2022 23:53

I remember dancing the night away in many of the nightclubs in Bristol- The Studio, R &J's, Vadims, the Granary, Busbys.

Onwayoutsoon · 23/02/2023 08:59

What a fantastic trip down memory lane !

Thecomfortador · 23/02/2023 09:44

Loving reading about these memories. I turned 3 in 1984 and was thinking I couldn't remember any of it, but then realised I spent a lot of time in hospital that year. I remember being in a hospital cot, having my hair washed by a nurse and getting stickle bricks from my uncle. And seeing a big kid opposite me in a normal bed that looked all cold and uncomfortable and being glad I was in a cosy cot. And also the pain of having a drip in my little finger.

I was 14. Tentatively experimenting with various looks and make up. Boot No. 17 Twilight Teaser was a favourite as was their electric blue mascara. My killer outfit was a white mini skirt, electric blue studded belt and silky electric blue top decorated with Chinese symbols. Perfume was either Lou Lou by Cacherel or Anais Anais.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 23/02/2023 10:23

I turned 30 in 1984 and DH and I went to Venice on the Orient Express. Two months later DH walked out to be with the OW, leaving me a note on the dining room table about 'not having been happy for a while' (yes, the script existed back then, as well). I wish MN had been around then, I wouldn't have wasted 2 years of my life on the lying cheating arse. I'm enjoying reading people's more positive and happy experiences, though 😂

Lostinadream24 · 23/02/2023 10:28

I was 8.
I have my Gran's diary from 1984. I love reliving those memories.
I was mad on Bucks Fizz.

cassiatwenty · 23/02/2023 10:45

Thank you for inviting me @LadyOfTheCanyon Flowers

LadyOfTheCanyon · 23/02/2023 10:59

Ah @MrsDanversGlidesAgain I'm sorry to hear that.
1984 also brought me my first boyfriend - in the year above me at school. He was into Prince and rode a BMX. We used to go into the fields behind the school after school and snog.

I was 22 and loving London life. Rumours cocktail bar and Maxwell’s in Covent Garden.

DatasCat · 23/02/2023 11:31

1984 I did my O levels. I was never into the music scene at the time, my tastes running more to 1784 on the piano than 1984 at a gig. But I do remember reading Jackie, and Smash Hits a bit later on so I didn’t completely embarrass myself. I remember raising my eyebrows at some of the very dodgy perms my classmates got, and I remember the scratch ‘n’ sniff stickers and scented felt tips.

That was the year I broke up with my best friend, an experience that still counts as one of the most traumatic of my life. With hindsight and maturity, I know that she was in fact a covert, manipulative bully, but it took a long time to understand it and it has been a very valuable inoculation against abusive relationships of all sorts.

ApolloandDaphne · 23/02/2023 12:59

I was 22 in 1984. I was living in edinburgh and having a lot of fun. I also got engaged and we married in 1985. Our 'song' was White Wedding by Billy Idol. We are still married and spend a lot of time reminiscing about the 80s!

That's OK, I went on the divorce diet and shed 12 stone of unwanted male 😂Happily single ever since. Nearly 39 years though, cripes. 😮

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 23/02/2023 13:40

I'm about a year younger than you, also grew up in London. I dressed mute from Flio than Kensington Market and was (bizarrely) into Roxy Music - but all those other bands and albums you've listed @LadyOfTheCanyon - they came to my life in my later teens. I still listen to EBTG.

Zuffe · 23/02/2023 13:47

1984 was a great summer. Used to drink cider on the beach at West Bay after harvest and smoke enormous Cuban cigars that we found in an abandoned lorry .

Always4Brenner · 23/02/2023 18:03

The year I left school 1 days before my 18th. Smalltown Boy a huge hit and still played to death by me it summed up how I felt, no not gay but a misfit a 007 misfit. A toxic family loved my music and 007.

Always4Brenner · 23/02/2023 18:03

Sorry 11 days.

PurpleReindeer2 · 23/02/2023 18:08

I was at uni in 1984. One of the best years of my life. Had a ball. Some utterly fantastic memories. Where does the time go????

RancidOldHag · 23/02/2023 18:17

The time difference between now and 1984 is the same as that between 1984 and the end of World War II. Ugh
