Literally can’t stand after c section?

Had c section this morning and can’t get off the bed to stand. Pain is so bad. Is this normal? I’ve read people tend to be able to get up after 7/8 hours.

What pain relief have you had? Some hospitals like to withhold anything stronger than paracetamol, which is bafflingly evil. I had oramorph, it's great. Only needed it for a few days.

Yes I got paracetamol. I never had another child.

IsedtoK · 16/11/2022 17:59

They’re saying one paracetamol one ibuprofen then the one beginning with ‘d’ later on.

im worried it’s so bad! I have anxiety though so probably making it worse

You should test for at least 24 hours I thought?

@bumblebeemumma i literally couldn’t do it though, pain was horrific. I couldn’t get up, it’s scared me a lot.

Were you on your own when you tried? How long ago did you have pain relief? 100% buzz your call bell and ask for some stronger pain relief and give it some time to kick in again before trying to get up again. And ask for someone to help you get up when you're ready too. I know maternity wards are busy places but the staff are there to help with exactly this sort of thing so don't lay there in pain unnecessarily. And don't forget a c-section is major abdominal surgery and there aren't many other ops where you'd be encouraged or expected to get up and about soon soon AND look after another little human being at the same time. One part of my job that I enjoy the most is helping c-section mums up and helping them freshen up or get showered, into fresh clothes and sitting out in a chair or back into bed with fresh sheets. Makes you fee a bit more human.

They get you up and about asap now, better for recovery apparently. I was up about seven hours after my first and 14 after second as they left catheter in overnight. I was home after 24 hours with both!

IsedtoK · 16/11/2022 18:03

They’ve offered oramotph but isn’t that morphine?? So confused now

Yes it's normal in my experience (2 c sections). I had a catheter and I think I was able to very slowly make my way to the hospital toilet after about 24 hrs. It's major surgery, will take a while to feel back to normal. Take care of yourself xxx

Hugasauras · 16/11/2022 18:04

Yes it's morphine.

amter · 16/11/2022 18:06

My first c section I couldn't get up at all, although it was crash c-sect and I had been in labour 3 days prior. The next 2 c-sections were much more manageable. Congratulations on your baby.

kilo · 16/11/2022 18:07

that's nuts....paracetemol and ibuprofen would not have cut it for me, I was on something much stronger (sorry can't remember what it was 10 years ago!) and when I was due my next dose and it was wearing off, the breakthrough pain was severe. poor you! ask for something stronger!

Yes its oral morphine. Excellent stuff, works very quickly so should improve how you're feeling and get on top of your pain.

Garman · 16/11/2022 18:08

You've had 7 layers of your abdomen severed, they rummaged around in your abdominal cavity and stitched it all back together just a few hours ago, and you're wondering why it's sore to stand up?! Of course it's normal for it to hurt/be difficult to do things hours after a major surgery, even with painkillers.

Funandgamestill · 16/11/2022 18:12

Take the pain relief !
I was up and about hobbling to the loo etc after about 5 hrs. I actually went home that night . I was taking cuprofen , codeine and paracetamol at the same time though .
when I got home I had a big meal and a glass of wine and slept for most of 12 hrs ( picked a winner with DH) When I woke from that I could walk pretty normally and do simple things like wipe the worktops , make bottles , water my precious window plants. That bent over sort of feeling took a good couple of weeks to fade away. I was told by a few people that I’d had an easy time of it compared to most and I really needed those drugs tbh .

ForgetBarbie · 16/11/2022 18:13

When I had my C Section the pain was literally unbearable. I couldn’t even sit forward it was so bad. DS got taken to NICU so I literally had to force myself out of the bed and into a wheelchair because there’s no way I wasn’t gonna see what the hell was going on with my baby. I still had my catheter in!

I think it all sounds normal but ask for pain relief and keep taking it even when you feel okay. I was in the hospital for 13 days and I kept taking every medication I could for 10 days😂 congratulations on the birth of your baby! Take it easy as I found the pain got more intense in the first few days before it calmed down

ShowOfHands · 16/11/2022 18:16

I was told I shouldn't be in pain and was up and about within 3hrs, showering and looking after the DC. I was home after 12hrs.

You really shouldn't be in pain on adequate painkillers.

If it's that horrific you can't move, why aren't you happy to take what they're offering?

Rainbowcat99 · 16/11/2022 18:19

A midwife had to help me shower 24 hours after my c section and I'd been completely out of it until then.
Then the second 24 hours I was up and toddling very, very slowly down the corridor.
I recovered very fast after that though so fingers crossed you feel better soon.

WimbyAce · 16/11/2022 18:29

My pain was hideous. I still remember shuffling to the car to go home and that was after 3 nights in hospital. Took me a while to be able to push the pram and walk any distance. Definitely put me off a second section!

saltofcelery · 16/11/2022 18:35

Is this your first C-section? Only asking as I know a few people who were totally fine with first one then on subsequent ones were knocked for six.

I've only had one and I felt strange down there, but didn't feel any pain.

saltofcelery · 16/11/2022 18:36

Also just to mention that I didn't take any painkillers afterwards, just whatever was left in my system from the surgery so I would ring for a midwife to check.

CookPassBabtridge · 16/11/2022 18:37

Yeah not until the next day!

Melonapplepear · 16/11/2022 18:38

Everyone experiences the pain differently. I could move around relatively fine although it was uncomfortable but my friend was how you are.

Melonapplepear · 16/11/2022 18:41

To add I only used pain killers as I made the choice not to have anything opiate based due my previous addiction issues. You have had a major surgery, no other surgery expects people to up about within hours either. You'll be fine.

CookPassBabtridge · 16/11/2022 18:42

I couldn't move first day for my 2 sections and hysterectomy. Second day start moving once catheter out but very slow and painful but needed to get rid of trapped wind. Third day shuffled out of hospital. After 2 weeks I was getting back to normal.
It's amazing how quick we can recover but first it feels like we never will!

disconnecteddrifter · 16/11/2022 18:50

I've had 2 sections and was not in pain. Twinges yes but pain no. You need to tell thr midwives.

Eranzer · 16/11/2022 19:13

I was in agony. It was hellish. I don't think the midwives actually believed me, I think they thought I was being dramatic! They wanted me to stand up about 6/7 hours afterwards, and I promise you I usually have a really high pain tolerance and get on with it, but I remember saying "fuck that".
I won't lie, it was really, really shitty for about 3/4 days afterward, too. Weirdly, by day 4, it just suddenly improved to a manageable level, and by 7 I was completely sound bar the odd mild twinge.

Do not fret, you will get there, let the midwives know, and take all the meds (especially the lactulose!!!)
