Is weed really good for autism????

Mupett · 15/11/2022 09:45

So we have all seen the videos of kids and adults using cannabis in one form or another to deal with autism etc and I for one was convinced it would help my soni thought this it it the holy grail as I have and do see a lot of positives.BUT AND HERE IS THE BUT...I have first hand seen my sons dad who isn't diagnosed but deff has either and/or aspbergers schizophrenia we are not together anymore but he smoked A LOT of dope and all I saw was him having psychotic outbreaks and also a friend from college days had aspbergers and shee took drugs and all I saw was her having breakdowns etc and then another friend of mine she has aspberegrs and she smokes weed constantly and all I ever here from her is one psychotic or deluded breakdown after the other...so I'm really torn about how I feel about weed to help autism.. any thoughts? I could be missing the fact that there is a difference between weed on the street and the weed that is formulated into something different ie am talking about the legal stuff in country's where the have actual qualified doctors and its some type of oil etc..I mean maybe there is something in the processing of it and it is complicated as there are proffessors working on It Israel etc.

OP, you are the embodiment of the saying 'A little knowledge is a dangerous thing'. Seriously, just stop with this nonsense. You don't know anything about cannabis, and you seem to have a pretty basic understanding of autism as well. Your high degree of confidence in the face of numerous significant risk factors is terrifying.

One of DS friends got into a canabis habit at 16, he has autism. The result was that he is now depressed and stays in bed all day and has dropped out of college , very sad. He said weed helped his mental health... but I am not convinced

My DS with ADHD reacted terribly to smoking weed as well (sick and panic stack)

Keep that shit away from our teens. (I say this a Dutch liberal person... fwiw). Especially the vulnerable ones. One of my school friends become schizophrenic after developing a weed habit, he has never recovered .

Alcohol and weed are understandable but terrible ways to self medicate for the young

They need help. Not drugs

Mupett · 15/11/2022 10:53

For your information 1.i left his father as I did not agree with drugs and 2. I terminated a 20 Yr friendship with someone with aspbergers due to me finding out very late years later they were doing drugs and other hard drugs but had been hiding it very well from.me..I terminate that friendship because I did not want that influence around my son.3.the other friend.i have who takes weed has aspbergers and takes only that and has agreed that it is done in her private time and not in presence of my son 4.i took advice from the MephistophelesApprentice because that person deserves respect they have been there.5.i take thus very seriously how dare you imply I am in anyway flippant.. do u have aspbergers do you know or have any1 in your family with it..have you watched a loved one tell you they tried to commit suicide because of it? NO

And that message is for whomever commented implying I have a lax druggy lifestyle etc..no dear you will find its called life and if you look around you most people are not perfect.

You say: "have you watched a loved one tell you they tried to commit suicide because of it? NO"

Sadly yes though, for me

You are (sadly) not alone

Hi, Asperger's sufferer here. I was on the verge of killing myself just before the 3rd year of uni. Horrifically lonely, terrified of the future, failing academically. I'd tried weed before, but literally just a toke here and there.

Once I'd decided to kill myself, I thought "f*ck it, no future to care about, why not have a week just getting high like I've seen on TV?" Bought my first bag, rolled my first enormously shitty joint. Smoked every day for a week.

I just didn't stop, after that. My grades radically improved. I was able to seek support from my university. People weren't terrifying any more. A few months later I had my first girlfriend and lost my virginity. I slept for more than four hours a night. I've now had a succession of meaningful relationships, worked my way upwards in my job. I've cut back a little on the weed, but that's because I'm so much happier.

I've had friends who started weed way too early, they sound like your mates. I didn't try any until I was 18 and I was 20 before I went to a daily dose. It didn't just help me survive, it allowed me to live.

My advice would be: keep doses low, just enough for a comfortable head tingle, not enough for a wobble. Make sure it's blended with other activities, such as a part of a nice stroll. Keep moving, don't let it become a sofa anchor. Dried fruit and/or nuts for the munchies. Use a herbal vape to minimise lung stress. Sativa over indica, if given the option. Don't do it before work or in a lunch break, but it's a lovely treat for a commute home.

The thing is, it being "part of a nice stroll" for the person smoking weed can make it very unpleasant for anyone walking past, or out with their children etc. I live in an area where the smoke and smell is everywhere and it makes our lives so unpleasant at times. I've even had to cut a run short from feeling light-headed after the cumulative effect of running past so many groups of people smoking. I nearly left the local firework display the other night because people were smoking all around us and it's really not okay especially at an event where there are going to be so many children. I'm not saying you are this inconsiderate but please please don't encourage more people to smoke it out and about.

Mupett · 15/11/2022 10:58

What do you mean..and apologies if I came over a bit strong its just I didn't appreciate being judged like that..I do no there are low life parents out there who probably give there kids hard drugs..but I am not one of them ok.

OP posts:
Mupett · 15/11/2022 11:00

I have to agree with that actually and also it may encourage then to want to smoke in general and I'm talking about tobacco.

Yes I am hearing good things from some and bad things from others ..its a very tricky and complex thing and it is thus because we all have different brain chemistry ie it is as individual as a fingerprint I have read.

BooksAndHooks · 15/11/2022 10:13

There is a big difference in using cannabis and using cannabis oil. The links to poor mental health with smoking cannabis would be a disaster for someone with autism or ADHD.

And between cannabis oil and CBD oil. The difference being the amount of THC.

Mupett · 15/11/2022 11:05

Think you have hit nail on the head. That is what I was contemplating was moving to country where it legal to where there are actual genuine professional legal medical practices where they do something with it into an oil etc its very complex scientific stuff.

FarFromTheStart · 15/11/2022 11:06

Give over, you are asking about illegally drugging your child. If you do that you should be jailed, so drop the morality talk.

Thread reported.

Mupett · 15/11/2022 11:09

Yeah this is the thing..we all as unique as our fingerprint every brain chemistry different cannabis is not a one size fits all..it needs professional doctors scientists etc to determine and we are away behind that.
I mean it is happening in some cou trys buy UK that'll be a no..instead there is a massive alcholhol problem and this us because people are using it to self medicate because current drugs don't works for asd and other things etc.

Emmamoo89 · 15/11/2022 11:11

Cbd oil is known to help to reduce symptoms of autism.

Emmamoo89 · 15/11/2022 11:12

But don't give it to your child. Speak to a doctor first.

Mupett · 15/11/2022 11:14

Ahh yes that is excellent advice especially for people in UK as we don't have access to it legally professional from doctors helping to tell you when or how much etc instead people with these problems seek to self medicate with either alcohol or even other hard drugs..ie the advice guidance just isn't there nor will it ever be and so problem will continue..problems with opiate addictions alcohol addiction bad weed and not taking right amount t etc inducing and actually causing possible problems instead of solving them. But I appreciate your comment because it is actually very sound ballanced and responsible Thank-you.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 15/11/2022 11:16

Those are some mighty big assumptions, op.
I am autistic.
I have used cannabis, as an adult.
Most of the autistic people I know have tried various medications and illegal drugs because we do often struggle with distress and suicidal ideation.
I still don't think you should cherrypick advice from strangers on the Internet about whether to give your child psychoactive substances.

username8888 · 15/11/2022 11:20

Your talking about medical cannabis? Lots of studies underway so maybe ask your paediatrician. You can buy it but it's probably not recommended for children. It has the psychoactive ingredient removed so no like stuff you smoke

username8888 · 15/11/2022 11:22

I think it falls into the category of self medication and can be a disaster or a godsend.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 15/11/2022 11:31

Well, it's good that you've decided against giving illegal and harmful drugs to your vulnerable child. That's a start. However, you're now talking about uprooting your lives and moving to another country - potentially one where you would have a worse quality of life - solely on the off-chance that your child MIGHT be prescribed an experimental treatment which MIGHT help them.

A good starting point would be to talk through some of your thought processes with whatever support agencies are currently working with your child, so that they have a full picture of the various issues involved here.

Mupett · 15/11/2022 11:37

Yes Thank-you. Not cherry picking so much as weighing it all up. I'm right with you in what you say as for 1 you are saying it does help you but at same time you wouldn't be irresponsible enough to recommend. I feel as I have said that because brain chemistry is as individual as a fingerprint then you can not casualy make an assumption on whether its OK for one person and or not another. I feel it would need professional scientific legal aproach ie I wouldn't get it off the street here and give it him. I think more investigate where its being medical and scientifically used tested etc in county's where it legal etc etc. There aren't meds that work for aspbergers we have already tried that and there are encouraging results in these areas..which can at least give someone some respite from the difficulties experienced with aspbergers.

OP posts:
Mupett · 15/11/2022 11:39

Good results being had in country's where it legal where they responsibly prescribe some scientifically processed form of it and give advice proper medical advice and also they are doing brain scans now to tailor along side it.

OP posts:
guidedbythelightt · 15/11/2022 11:44

It really doesn't help me at all. And I'm autistic. It makes me worse.

WandaWomblesaurus · 15/11/2022 11:55

You need to get proper medical advice about this - it's not usually advised for younger people and if it is, it's usually not in the smoking form but taken as a tincture or tablet.
