What do you eat at the theatre

I’m going to the theatre for the first time next month and I know it sounds silly but I don’t know what to expect.
Because of work and travel time I won’t have time to have dinner first, do I buy snacks there, or can I take food with me? Is it like the cinema? Or do i just need to be hungry until it’s over.

also do I have to get there much earlier than it starts? Or is 10 minutes to find my seat ok? I don’t have the tickets yet just the booking which says 7.30pm.

My kids school take them to the panto to every year for free, I'm shocked the OP has reached adulthood without experiencing a theatre. And I worked in inner London schools for over a decade - every kid had been in a theatre. Even the ones with four kids to a bedroom.

My sons school have never took them to a theatre and my daughter school did but then covid hit and they haven’t bothered since.

@Mistlefrog Often the theatre website will say how long the show is. If you tell us someone here might know as well! A reasonable rule of thumb though would be about 2.5 hours including interval.

Do not eat in the theatre fgs. It's antisocial, makes a noise, and can't you manage two hours without food???

Excellent reading comprehension from you. Thank you for being rude.

What are you going to see @Mistlefrog?

Im going to come off this thread now, because I think it’s stopped being helpful.

I’ve never been to the theatre because I was never in a position to afford it.
now I can, I wanted to treat myself but got a bit anxious because I didn’t know what to expect and didn’t know the social etiquette. plus I work long hours and actually logistically it’s a bit of a faff.

I’m very happy for many of you that you have been able to enjoy the theatre so much but perhaps you may want to make it a more welcoming environment, or you yourselves could be more welcoming to people, not everyone is as lucky as you and many more people would love to enjoy it too. Clearly, some things that may be obvious to you aren’t obvious to us all.

thank you for the people who helped, I’ve booked a restaurant for after the performance.
I’m really looking forward to it.

Have a lovely time! Sometimes you can pre-order a drink for the interval too, saves queuing ;-)

I don't even know where to start, but let's just go with 'people exist outwith London' for starters Confused

boopan · 15/11/2022 20:06

Ice cream in the interval only

Have a lovely time @Mistlefrog & pay no attention to the smug, sanctimonious twats on here. No one knows everything.

Have a lovely time. What show is it?
