What do you eat at the theatre

I’m going to the theatre for the first time next month and I know it sounds silly but I don’t know what to expect.
Because of work and travel time I won’t have time to have dinner first, do I buy snacks there, or can I take food with me? Is it like the cinema? Or do i just need to be hungry until it’s over.

also do I have to get there much earlier than it starts? Or is 10 minutes to find my seat ok? I don’t have the tickets yet just the booking which says 7.30pm.

Tickets usually state what time to get there (usually 30 mins before curtain up).

Late comers annoy me much more than wrapper rustlers. It pisses me off that grown adults can't organise themselves in order to get to a performance on time! Same with toilet goers, stop faffing about and go before it starts, then if you need it again go in the interval.

id try and aim for about 15 minutes before-depending wher eyour seat is-i went to see Six the other day and people were coming in less than 5 miinutes to go and in our row it really annoyed me

just eat a sandwich on the way in your car

Worse when they arrive just after the start time

SomethingNastyInTheBallPool · 14/11/2022 18:47

I usually take a Pret sandwich or similar to eat in the interval. I don’t generally have time to eat beforehand, and I’d keel over if I had to wait until after the show.

Take a ham/ cheese sandwich. Have this in the office at 4:30.

Buy/bring another sandwich for the interval.

Newcatbrowntail · 14/11/2022 19:30

Well the bouncer who checked the bags last time I went to the theatre with a sandwich hadn’t read that memo.

I’ve never eaten in the theatre. I’ve never let my kids eat in the. Ice-cream during the interval!

SomeChickensAreJustTooBig · 14/11/2022 19:40

I’m not a big fan of people eating in the theatre.

Nitgel · 14/11/2022 19:44

Banana

mindutopia · 14/11/2022 19:46

Definitely just eat before or after depending on the time of the show. That’s one of the joys of the theatre, having an early dinner or a late one.

Alighttouchonthetiller · 14/11/2022 19:47

One of the many things I love about theatre is that it keeps me away from food for a few hours.

I hate it when I end up near someone who can’t even go for a few hours without pushing food into their face and chatting to their pals.

Banana

Please don’t eat a stinky banana in the theatre! Or a hard-boiled egg, or some ham, or any other silent but deadly food.

Bananaman123 · 14/11/2022 20:03

You could take a smoothie to help keep the rumbling tummy at bay

I meant before u go in

Isithotinhere · 14/11/2022 23:19

Maltessers, in a box for fancy.

WindyHedges · 15/11/2022 02:49

No, not Maltesers. Not while you’re sitting watching the show.

It is possible to go 2 hours without eating, funnily enough.

PeeJayDay · 15/11/2022 03:35

Just eat a sandwich on your way from the car to the theatre. Easy

Kennykenkencat · 15/11/2022 03:37

I would say aim to get there at around 7ish as there are usually quick eyes for the bag check and if you have to get your ticket from the box office.
Also depending on where you are sitting there are stairs to climb and you might need the loo, order a drink for the interval etc.
We always find it is quite slow to get in and move around and get to your seat
I would take a sandwich and drink for the drive there

WindyHedges · 14/11/2022 15:31

You do not eat at the theatre.

Have a meal before, or after. Eat something in the interval if you really must.

But do not eat during the show. Ever.

Absolutely agree. It's so disruptive and disrespectful.

caroleanboneparte · 15/11/2022 05:28

Eat a packed lunch on the way there.

Arrive at least 20 minutes before.

Snugglemonkey · 15/11/2022 06:17

alongtimeagoandfaraway · 14/11/2022 14:48

Totally agree with the above comments but I have been to a musical (Wicked) where seemingly massive amounts of food and drink were available to buy beforehand and in the interval. The auditorium was full of people munching and slurping.I’d never seen anything like it. Good merchandising opportunity I suppose but a really negative experience for me (wasn’t keen on the show either, too many plot holes and screechy singers)

We recently saw wicked and there were so many people with giant buckets of popcorn. It was disgusting.

balalake · 15/11/2022 06:27

Never eat in the theatre, go on days when I can eat beforehand.

hellocleveland · 15/11/2022 06:46

I cannot bear anyone eating noisily near me in either the cinema but especially the theatre. I once had someone eat Pringles behind me very noisily for the first half of a show. After putting up with it for half an hour, I turned round and asked them to eat more quietly and the friend I was with told ME off for being 'rude' and that they were entitled to eat as noisily as they liked!!Hmm

user73 · 15/11/2022 06:55

Dh runs a theatre. They do sell bags of sweets but they are deliberately priced extortionately high to dissuade people. They’re about £6.50 a bag.

Ice creams in the interval only. Loads of people sit there with drinks though (in plastic glasses) and you can pre order drinks from the bar for the interval.

LozzaChops101 · 15/11/2022 06:58

Think you’ve got all the food advice you need, but just wanted to pop in and say I hope you enjoy your very first theatre trip! That’s so exciting, I hope you have a BRILLIANT time!
