So dull but healthy teen snacks

I know. But dd13 is forever moaning there is nothing to eat. For school lunch, after school etc.

They eat a bit too much processed stuff as it is so I'm looking for stuff which is a bit healthy. They have access to toast, fruit etc of course. I try to get them to go for plain yoghurt and add bits but that's a non starter.

I don't have heaps of time but can do a bit of batch cooking if a Sunday and they can reheat in the air fryer - they are pros....

I feel your pain. DS almost 14 has 2 diners each night, as I just can't fill him up, he's a literal food machine!!!

He's good with his fruit and veg, but at 5f 9" and weighing only 10 stone, there is nothing too him. He's very broad, but his waist is invisible, I don't know where it goes!

It's costing me a fortune!

GiddyUpJingleHorse · 13/11/2022 18:19

My new favourite snack is homemade trail mix - my sister gave me the idea. Any mixture of shreddies, popcorn, chopped apricots/raisins/cranberries, pretzels, nuts etc... delicious!

Perfect28 · 13/11/2022 18:21

You can buy frozen dumplings that are so easy to cook and come with a dipping sauce.

GiddyUpJingleHorse · 13/11/2022 18:24

Meant to add I sprinkle a few dark choc chips on too

TheSausageKingofChicago · 13/11/2022 18:27

Mine get through dozens of fish fingers a week. I know they are processed, but fish is good right?

Potato waffles can be done in the toaster.

Yogurt, lots of yogurt.

Crackers and cheese

Tins of soup

FancyANewID · 13/11/2022 18:28

Bizarre with the fruit cut up thing.

My eldest 2 are 14 and 12. They'd sigh with mild disappointment if I handed them fruit as a snack - but they're delighted with a bowl of chopped apple, banana and grapes

Waterfallstop · 13/11/2022 18:30

Eggs - I buy 24 at time. My teen frequency has 3 egg scrambled egg when he gets back from school.

Ionacat · 13/11/2022 18:31

I tend to batch cook some loaf cakes - a favourite here is a carrot cake loaf (it has wholemeal flour and less sugar.) She also likes a tea loaf, spiced apple loaf, spiced banana loaf or yogurt loaf. They freeze quite well so I tend to do two at a time (adding a glaze when I defrost). Oaty biscuits are also a favourite. DD also enjoys baking and that kills two birds with one stone.
I also keep pizza topping in the fridge, muffins and crumpets bagged separately in the freezer - muffin pizzas are a favourite here. Bizarrely Rich Tea biscuits are also a favourite here - especially with a hot chocolate!

AlwaysLatte · 13/11/2022 18:35

My 14 year old makes smoothies with porridge oats, banana, peanut butter etc, or with berries. Or noodles with sliced chicken. Or cereal (weetabix with banana). Another thing he makes is whisked egg in a frying pan with a wrap placed on top, then flipped over and filled with ham and cheese before folding into quarters He finds most of the ideas on TikTok.

TheSausageKingofChicago · 13/11/2022 18:35

Crumpets
Croissants
Fruit loaf for toasting

AlwaysLatte · 13/11/2022 18:35

Best comment ever!!!

I really don’t want to be that mumsnetter but I’m really quite surprised by the amount of teens needing such substantial snacks.

If they’re getting in from school between 4/4:30 they’ll have had their lunch only 3 hours earlier and be due their evening meal 90 minutes(ish) after.

Do teens really need to eat every 3/4ish hours?

Ive had/got 2 teens and have never fed them more than 3 meals and sporadically 1 snack per day.

antiquisearchers · 13/11/2022 18:45

So many ideas here - thanks for starting the thread OP! My teens won't cut their own apples either, relieved to hear there are others out there too!

Mine like raisin bread and malt loaf. We quite often have crumpets in too. You've reminded me that I bought some popping corn which is languishing at the back of a cupboard.

I honestly don't know the answer to this. Mine are always apparently "starving" but I suspect much of the time just fancy a snack. They are both skinny, one v active, one less so, so I don't worry about it too much.

Happyunhappy · 13/11/2022 18:50

Baked beans in the microwave. Bread in the toaster.

Mummyoflittledragon · 13/11/2022 19:12

My 14 yo dd is the same about cut up fruit. At my insistence she has an apple after school and she takes some chocolate or biscuits too. I used to regularly bake reduced sugar cakes, which she ate plain and loaf cakes. But am not well enough atm. Really is something I should try to restart.

Mine doesn’t eat much at school. She says lunch time is so short, that there isn’t the time, so when she gets in, she’s hungry. Snack plus lunch probably equals a decent size lunch. Plus on a dance night she prefers to eat dinner when she gets back but needs something substantial before she goes to keep her energy levels up. She is a twig and sometimes eats everything and anything and other times isn’t that hungry so it clearly balances out.
