Fumming

Confused

Sounds like they have no manners or idea about how to do a customer-facing job?

I wouldn't "cry and shake". I'd just have to ask for management to come and resolve the situation because as someone with autism, this would be impossible to cope with. How stressful.

Shopping at Waitrose using Scan as You Shop is the way to go. No conveyor shenanigans and a free coffee at the end. 👍

Are they back doing free coffee again? The coffee machine at our Waitrose has cobwebs on it since 2020.

and they don't give away free newspapers either. Just £1.50 measly vouchers.

it's their version of shrinkflation- I don't go in there anymore in protest.

Mentalpiece · 13/11/2022 04:14

It actually was a mumsnettet.
I remember her posting about it.

I fucking love Aldi - that frisson of excitement at the check out, the speed, the lack of chat. It's why I go there and the cheap prices are a bonus.

I like the order of priority!

To be fair I find Aldi and Lidl really stressful for this reason and avoid them like the plague 😂

… I don’t understand why they rush so much, nobody can bag their items that quickly

You're not supposed to bag them at the till, that's what the shelf behind the tills is for.

Free coffee was reinstated last Monday. You have to make a purchase first and take your own cup.
Free newspaper thing-never took that up, I’m still surprised people read an actual paper these days.

MyLovelyPen · 13/11/2022 10:39

@Mentalpiece me too! I remember the thread 😄

@Sparklingbrook Waitrose have probably cottoned on to the fact that people aren't doing their big shop there any more and using the cheaper supermarkets for that. A big shop in Waitrose costs around £15 more, even with their weekly vouchers. So they're obviously trying to give a bit of value-add with the coffee. I've got several of their reusable lidded cups which I use all the time, and we always used to put a couple into our shopping bag pre-COVID. So I may go in there this week, as I used to enjoy their cappuccino!

Butitsnotfunnyisititsserious · 14/11/2022 05:54

A checkout lady in our local supermarket said that they are timed by the till on how long it takes them to scan through all the items and if it takes too long they get told off. She said “take as long as you need before I start scanning and after I finish but in between I have to go very fast or I’ll get in trouble.”

I was about to say this. There's a reason they do it fast.

From what I’ve read they’ve teamed up with Café Nero and using their coffee for the machines. I’ve not had a taste yet.

I always do smart shop and just scan as I go, no free coffee but much better

Sparklingbrook · 14/11/2022 07:22

I don’t know why more people don’t use Scan as You shop.
Yes you get the odd random check but on the whole the shopping goes in the bag then doesn’t come out again until you’re home. So much quicker than unloading it onto a conveyor and double handling everything. And it adds your spend up as you go.

Gone are the days that most supermarkets employ people solely for tills the whole time the staff do everything everywhere.
