Teen bathroom blocked sink hell!

coffeerevelsrule · 12/11/2022 11:41

My dc have sole use of a bathroom as I have an ensuite. I do enforce regular cleaning of it but it has come to light that the sink is completely blocked. Water isn't draining at all. I have used soda and vinegar to no avail, though loads of delightful black bits are now swimming about in the water. I've also used hot water and washing up liquid, with the same result.

Any other recommendations? I've bought fairly expensive products in the past that have done nothing for less serious cases than this and have always had success with the above, but have obviously acted on past cases a lot sooner!

Help - please!

Drain unblocker, leave it to work, then block the overflow, add some hot water and plunger away.

ItsNotReallyChaos · 12/11/2022 12:27

If it might be hair you need a really thin long bristly brush to stick down the plug and twizzle to try and trap the hair. Then pull.
It's rank when it comes up but it's a quick fix of the problem.

Wheelyweddingwipedout · 12/11/2022 12:28

15 and 13!!! Please either get the tools and have them do it or you do it and write out an invoice for tools and your labour that they will have to pay in kind somehow. They won’t do it again and will bring them a new adult perspective on things.

Just unscrew the u bend?

ThirtyTwoGoingUnder · 12/11/2022 12:46

Mr Muscle drain unblocker is amazing - I'd try that before the soda. Leave it in overnight for maximum effect and then flush down with kettle hot water tomorrow morning. Was very effective in a repetitive blockage in our shower and minimal effort really

I can second this

Teen son and toothpaste and hair down it.
Done exacty what @ThirtyTwoGoingUnder done and it worked a treat.

God I've never gone so far an unscrewing a U-bend before...

Have been plunging frantically, I forgot to say. All that's happening is it's all splashing out of the overflow thing.

But I do want one of those snake things.

You need to plug up the overflow hole whilst you plunge. Plunging creates a vacuum which forces the blockage to move.

Bluekerfuffle · 12/11/2022 13:02

Mr muscle sink and drain unblocker usually works well.

backinthebox · 12/11/2022 13:03

I have to confess this is not just a teen problem.

It is in our household! 7 years me and my husband had the bedroom with the en suite. Never blocked once. The family bathroom, otoh, blocked all the time. Then we swapped bedrooms, DD had the en-suite and we had the family bathroom - within the first month we had a major flood of the kitchen because her shower drain was blocked but she just carried on showering with the water pouring over the edge. Son is in that bedroom now, DD has moved out to a different room with its own bathroom - that one also floods. It’s not difficult to conclude that the linking factor here is DD! I don’t know what she does in the shower, but 3 showers in the house have all blocked only when they are used solely by DD.

Wire coat hanger, undone, with a little hook made at the end. Worked for me when Mr Muscle didn’t.

binkiel · 12/11/2022 13:07

Does she have extremely long hair @backinthebox I think that's the problem we have, but she does keep brushing her hair in front of the mirror over the sink.

Rockersversuswalter · 12/11/2022 13:13

I use the plunger with the sink full of water and the overflow blocked.

Stravaig · 12/11/2022 13:45

Get a sink strainer too, OP, to sit over the plug hole and prevent it ever happening again.

CottonSock · 12/11/2022 13:51

I put one of those snakes down my bath plug just for fun recently. Wasn't blocked. I was shocked with what I extracted. Even took a photo for the memory.
I use caustic soda sometimes, carefully!
And plunge away (not with the caustic soda in there!)

TwinklingStarlight · 12/11/2022 13:56

Soda crystals and a kettle of boiling water have cleared many a blockage here. I think I'd be buying branded drain unblocker if that doesn't work.

dottiedodah · 12/11/2022 14:00

Mr Muscle clears up most things TBH. Really stinks though!

Gunner1510 · 12/11/2022 14:15

Tesco and B&Q sell a brand called HG they have a great unblocker for hair and soap scum works every time I’ve used it, it’s about £6 or £7

iamjustwinginglife · 12/11/2022 15:23

Mr Muscle-leave it overnight

CornishTiger · 12/11/2022 15:28

@coffeerevelsrule I’d do the u bend first before you stick any more chemicals in. Take photos if necessary it will be accessible somehow.

Then I’d Mr Muscle it - all with teens helping of course.

You can't say that and not post the photo!

I second what @Gunner1510 said about HG brand, good stuff. I think Lakeland might have it as well.

AlwaysWalkingOnEggshells · 12/11/2022 15:51

Can someone please explain how to use the £1 wire snake thing. I bought one from tesco last time my shower was blocked and couldn't figure it out.

Shopaholic123Go · 12/11/2022 15:52

Make the teens clear the blockage OP. If they have to deal with the stinky mess once they'll be more careful to avoid it occurring in future.

Onnabugeisha · 12/11/2022 15:55

I like block buster. If they shave, that will be what’s doing it. I put block buster down the drain every three months to keep pipes draining well.

CellarBellaatemycoal · 12/11/2022 15:56

fabulosa foamo v cheap and very good

Just feed it through the biggest hole in the plug. It might take some wiggling as it gets to the bends in the pipe or the blockage. Try winding/turning it. Use one hand to hold it and stop it spring back and the other to feed it down the drain. Then PUUUULLLLLLLLL!

The first time I used mind I thought I could not get it in! Then I thought I would never get it out!
