"For what it's worth: it's never too late to be who you want to be. I hope you live a life that you're proud of, and if you find that you're not, I hope you find the strength to start over."
F. Scott Fitzgerald

I did start over in my 40s, and I'm now leading the life I dreamed of since I was a little girl, so it resonates. I am becoming the person I always wanted to be. Smile

'Rules are made for the obediance of fools and guidance of the wise'

'Only seek shade under a tree which will bear fruit,

' Only dead fish flow with the stream'

'Good manners and courtesy cost nothing, but are priceless'

I like ‘when you can’t find motivation, find discipline’

I use it a lot when I cannot drag my sorry carcass out to the gym or for a run. Motivation is chance, discipline is a choice.

Ooh that's a good one!

'The only easy day was yesterday '.
I think it's from the US Navy Seals, but I find it applies well to parenting.

Everything changes in a week.

This too shall pass.

It isn't my favourite, but one I intend to bear in mind is Hitler saying 'What good fortune for those in power that people do not think'. This one encourages me to question what I hear, and feels particularly relevant currently.

”The past is a foreign country: they do things differently there,”

L P Hartley : How we understand the past and how we come to terms with our own memories, is an unpaid debt that all humans share.

Ooh I love that one. Thank you for sharing

"Punch today in the face" has been a favorite of mine for a while.

"There is no elevator to success. You have to take the stairs".

"Motivation is the fuel. Discipline is the fire"

Kabbalah · 12/11/2022 12:32

Motivation is chance, discipline is a choice

Wow, I’ll do my best to remember that one.

WinterLobelia · 12/11/2022 12:35

I love one attributed to Galileo; 'Wine is sunglight misxed with water'.

i LOVE the MN one 'Not my circus, not my monkeys'. That was a life changer for me when trying to mediate between my mother and her older sister. Both are as batshit as each other on occasion.

'You can't go back and change the beginning, but you can start where you are and change the ending'. C S Lewis

"If you tolerate this, then your children will be next" MSP

Makes me keep fighting

Dust only gets so deep (Quentin Crisp I believe)

No one can make you feel inferior without your consent (Elenor Roosevelt)

Foolme once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.

The grass is greener where you water it.

"I like these cold, grey winter days. Days like this let you savour a bad mood."

I know it's not deep or meaningful, but I do love the feel sometimes of just savouring a bad mood (by myself, you know) instead of 'fixing' things, just for a little while.

dun1urkin · 12/11/2022 13:11

’Feeling bitter is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die’ (can’t remember the source, CBA to google)

and the thing from AA (I think) that applies to so many situations

"And in the end the love you take,
Is equal to the love you make."

You might be done with the past, but the past is not done with you, from the film Magnolia

It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

Vigneau · 12/11/2022 13:18

In a defining moment for the company, George W. Merck gave a talk at the Medical College of Virginia at Richmond, during which he made a famous statement about how the medical and pharmaceutical community could be successful:

"We try to remember that medicine is for the patient. We try never to forget that medicine is for the people. It is not for the profits. The profits follow, and if we have remembered that, they have never failed to appear."

Vigneau · 12/11/2022 13:21

The challenge of leadership is to be strong, but not rude; be kind, but not weak; be bold, but not bully; be thoughtful, but not lazy; be humble, but not timid; be proud, but not arrogant; have humor, but without folly.

Be a warrior, not a worrier.

Trez1510 · 12/11/2022 13:26

"Not everything that counts can be counted, and not everything that can be counted counts."

Albert Einstein.

I've never been materialistic, and my wee Gran used to say "There's someone who knows the cost of everything and the value of nothing ...." about people who were/are extraordinarily motivated by 'things'.

How I see it is there must be something in this idea if it captured Albert Einstein and, much more importantly, my wee Gran's ideals.
