Just wondering if any pensioners have seen this payment yet?

We got ours last year on the 8th November so wondered if anyone has had similar this year.

Earlier I found the letter I received about the winter fuel payment, which I had mislaid. I am apparently going to receive £500 this month. That surely cannot be right!

Nope, that's correct.

Well I am surprised. I would rather it went to someone, or a family, who needs it. £500 would go a long way towards Christmas. I have no idea how the powers that be calculate who gets what but I am on my own and retired with pensions, not on benefits.

It's nothing to do with benefits. It's for pensioners.

It is a cost of living and winter fuel payment. You won't get that every year.

Well you have options. I went and bought a load of Christmas stuff for our local food bank who were requesting particular stuff especially for children (Not looking for any praise here) and I'm not finished yet. I guess the cost of making it means tested is prohibitive.

Despite being in receipt of a state pension I'm not eligible as I was born 12 days too late to qualify. The date for qualifying is totally arbitrary and anyone born after that date gets nothing rather than a pro rata amount. Not a happy bunny.

What was the date?

pedanticromantic · 02/12/2022 00:04

Received ours on 30th November.

Supergranster · 02/12/2022 00:16

Anybody with NI number starting with S received it yet ? .Last year got it on the 23rd Nov and nothing as of yet this year. I wonder if there is a delay this time round ?

LBFseBrom · 02/12/2022 22:09

I don't think it should be means tested. I'll think about what to do with the money. Thanks for your comments.

This year, on account of fuel prices going up, some people have been given a £150 rebate on their Council Tax, some are getting £400 rebate allowed against their electricity bills for 6 months and some are getting extra money on their Winter Fuel Payments. I'm not sure of the rules of the £500 although I'm sure I could look it up. I think there is an age aspect to it. (75??) Some people who would normally have received £200 are getting £300 more. This help is for this winter only, the Chancellor said.

It's a vexed question as to whether the WFP should simply be paid to all pensioners i.e. a universal benefit, or whether it should be means tested. Helen Mirren moaned years ago that she didn't need it and people have said they give the money to charity if they feel they don't need it.
It could be means-tested by allowing it to be paid only to people who qualify for Pension Credit but that would leave a lot of people who are just a little way out of Pension Credit struggling without any help.

Only certain levels of houses were given the rebate on council tax.
Everyone who has a utility account is getting the 400 fuel rebate
Only OAPs get the 500 pound or part of it.
