Airport prices ...what on earth?

Haven't travelled in a few years.
Went on holiday last week
2 breakfasts and a pint and a gin came to £47!!
£47
Is this the norm? I honestly fell into my chair

We use the lounges as usually 20-30 pounds each - much better value

gogohmm · 10/11/2022 15:25

Wetherspoons isn't that much, more than the high street but think I paid around £32/33 last May

FuckabethFuckor · 10/11/2022 15:31

Airports have always been expensive. Captive audience, and lots of permissioning going on.

BarbaraofSeville · 10/11/2022 15:35

It's always been like that, I'm surprised anyone is surprised by this. These days it's more of a shock if I'm not thinking 'how much!!!??' when the bill comes.

We paid about that amount for two mediocre pub meals and two pints just before covid.

Do you not use service stations, theme parks etc? 'Captive Market' places tend to charge an arm and a leg for what is often poor quality, it's the norm in the UK sadly.

But the prices are on the menu, so if you don't like them, don't order. If we don't want to spend that much, we'll tend to just get a coffee and a Boots meal deal.

NCFT0922 · 10/11/2022 15:36

Yes, completely normal. They’re so expensive for what you get. Lounges work out better value.

Chesterdrawsseriously · 10/11/2022 15:36

Did you not look at the pricing before you ordered?

airports have always been expensive, but really you should look at pricing befor you buy. You can get meal deals etc and do it cheaper

We were at Bristol Airport in June and looking for something to eat. £18 for Macaroni cheese in one restaurant. We ended up at Tortilla having a burrito which was £7 and got to say it was amazing, the best one I've had since I was in california and great value for money as it was huge. We normally go to the mcdonalds or wetherspoons at Gatwick as they don't massively hike up their prices.

ivegotthisyeah · 10/11/2022 15:48

I paid over £15 for two bottles of coke in a Turkish airport last summer. I'm still not over it

Mary46 · 10/11/2022 15:54

Yes pricey. Dublin same 2 breakfasts is around 23 euro!

It depends on the lounge. Some are terrible value.

TheDogsMother · 10/11/2022 16:00

We decided to have a little treat at Gatwick last week. Two glasses of Champagne, smoked salmon, scrambled egg and toast. I obviously understood it wasn't going to be the cheap option but £74 !! It was the most expensive meal of our trip.

nowahousewife · 10/11/2022 16:05

Recently flying out of T5 LHR and paid £43 for a bowl of pasta and a glass of wine! Turns out they’d put a £1.50 cover charge on (what for, who know) and then put a 15% service charge on.

I was so shocked I actually paid it! Never again Gordon Ramsey.

And to add insult the pasta was horrible and bland, I left half of it.

Lockheart · 10/11/2022 16:10

Does noone look at the prices before they order these days?

DarkMatternix · 10/11/2022 16:13

How much was the food v the alcohol? I was going to have a glass of wine in the airport but decided against it when I found out it was 7 quid a glass.

user1471464218 · 10/11/2022 16:16

£7 wine sounds like what you'd pay in a Belfast bar so I'm surprised it's that cheap at an airport.

I think that was in the Wetherspoons so the cheap option!

CantFindTheBeat · 10/11/2022 16:21

I'd guess it was your drinks.

Lots of Giraffe-type places are around £11-12 for a breakfast, with additions for toast, avocado etc.

I imagine the gin they serve is double, so at least a tenner.

EllaPaella · 10/11/2022 16:26

I nearly choked when a glass of wine and a cup of tea cost me £24 at Newcastle airport this summer!

momager1 · 10/11/2022 16:33

18 dollars for a glass of pinot grigio at toronto pearson.. it was cheap stuff...same stuff i sell as our house wine at my restaurant for 6.99 a glass...a much BIGGER glass...but as PP say...captive audience. Plus most flying out and already in holiday mode and willing to pay more...or at least not care at the moment

Was that Dalaman airport by any chance? Its absolutely notorious for sky high prices

ivegotthisyeah · 10/11/2022 16:39

Me too.

MoggyMittens23 · 10/11/2022 16:47

Don't people check the prices before they order?!

WithIcePlease · 10/11/2022 16:55

Am I the only person who didn't know lounges do food?? Off to Google....

GlitteryFarts · 10/11/2022 16:58

Paid 22.50 each in the lounge a couple of years ago (pre-covid) at Manchester. Unlimited alcohol and food for 3 hours. Best sober -face boarding the plane! (Hammered) and stuffed to the brim with pasta and pastries!! Totally worth it!
