Boiler was mid range size for our house

Smart meter?
With that you could see exactly how much it costs.

Sorry that I can't be more help but we don't have a combi anymore.

Flavabobble · 10/11/2022 12:12

Take a meter reading an hour apart while the boiler is on, and work it out using your unit price. You'd need a recent bill to refer to

Our new boiler is set to 18.5 ° and I set to come on in the evenings 6-10 and mornings 6-9 doesn't always kick in as it been quite mild.

X2 showers per day
Gas hob so usually on for roughly half an hour per day

Oct to nov 7th cost £53 in gas not including ridiculous standing charge

Nowheretoogo · 10/11/2022 12:16

We used an extra £50 in gas in October, heating on for half an hour in the morning, new combi boiler fitted in July,7 radiators also, flow set at 55 on the boiler.

Hugasauras · 10/11/2022 12:19

Too many variables. You'll need to test it and see what it is for you. It's always highest in the first hour though.

Hugasauras · 10/11/2022 12:21

If you read gas meter before and after and times the difference in units by 11.2 (assuming your meter is m3) it'll give you the KWh use. Then you multiply that by unit rate.

FayeGovan · 10/11/2022 14:28

The smart meter isnt working and i cant get to the meter. tbh I'm more confused than ever. I just wanted a rough cost.

Look up the make and model and find the power output e.g 24 kW then multiply by the unit rate e.g 10.3p. I.e 24 kW X 1 h X 10.3p/ kWh = £2.47 assuming that it's running at full power the whole time. There's also a bit of electricity to run the pump.

MothBat · 10/11/2022 14:41

Ours is 34kW and looking on ou meter readings we used approx 20kW in 1.5 hours yesterday with heating on and 2 showers.

FayeGovan · 10/11/2022 14:46

Thanks it is 24kw

OP posts:
TimeForMeToF1y · 10/11/2022 14:53

You're not going to be able to get an answer to this, it won't even be the same amount every hour in your home

There are far too many variables, please don't assume that your cost will be the same as what are essentially random numbers that other posters will tell you

You can measure the historic cost of an actual hour but it won't be the same as the following hour

gogohmm · 10/11/2022 15:05

What size boiler 24? 28?

Hugasauras · 10/11/2022 15:10

Honestly, if I tell you what it costs me it may have no relevance to what it costs you.

For example: what temperature is your thermostat set to? What are your radiators set to? How well is your house insulated? How many people are in your house? Are you home during the day? How cold is it where you live? What time of day are you using your heating?

Those are just some of the variables. There are plenty more!

At a basic level, the KHw of your boiler will tell you how much it can use while pumping out heat constantly, but it's unlikely it will a) ever reach that amount or b) stay at that level for any length of time.

Our gas usage tends to peak at around 11KHw currently for heating our house and then go down as it nears temp and then up again, but again, that means very little to you because my house, where I am in the country, what my comfort level of heat is and how many people are in and moving around it at a time are almost certainly different from yours.

Hugasauras · 10/11/2022 15:13

For example, this shows how gas usage varies from hour to hour within the same house. So there is no 'hourly' rate. First pic was my house on Monday and second is yesterday .

It is almost impossible to answer your question directly as the boiler will be switching on and off at different times. However as a VERY rough guide in our house (3 bed detached with generally someone in all the time) in the coldest months of Dec, Jan and Feb on average our boiler uses about 50kWh of gas for heating every day between 7am and 9pm at a cost of about £5. Ctr Htg is supplemented by a gas fire in the living room in the evening.

Hope this helps.

Hugasauras · 10/11/2022 15:20

And I'm not meaning to be difficult or obstructive, it's just that I don't want you to get duff info that doesn't apply to you and for you to either think that a) it's too expensive to run your heating based on what someone else says and sit there freezing or in a damp and mouldy home unnecessarily or b) the opposite and you get hit with a large bill you weren't expecting.

If your smart meter isn't working and you can't get to your meter, you need to get your supplier to sort it out ASAP or you'll be getting estimated bills, which can be drastically wrong and you could end up either paying too much or get into debt on your energy account.

Do you have access to your bills from last winter?

FayeGovan · 10/11/2022 15:32

I think i wrote what i wanted to ask wrong. Im sorry im just confused. Boiler is 24kw. Thermostat at 19. What i wanted to know is, my Thermostat is turned off all the time. If i turn it on and it heats continously for an hour till it reaches 19, how much roughly does that hour cost?

FayeGovan · 10/11/2022 15:33

Edf only bill twice a year and am waiting on the smart meter being fixed.

Still too many variables. Is the starting temp of the room 18C or 8C?
Is your house well insulated and the boiler cut off after 5 mins or will the heat be pouring outside as fast as you can pump it into the room and the boiler is running full bore for that hour?
Even slight differences in these things will make huge differences to what the answer is.
Getting the house up to a temperature is going to use a lot more energy than to maintain it at that temp for a longer duration.
Other than reading your meter before and after all you could really do is time how long your boiler is actually running for in that hour and a bit of maths (and even that won't account for boiler efficiency etc) - what fraction of an hour running x 24kwh x unit rate = (very) approximate cost

The question will be unanswerable how ever you ask it unfortunately, there is just no way to get to a reliable answer

MrFlibblesEyes · 10/11/2022 19:34

My smart meter is always on 78p when I wake up at 6am (assuming g this is the standing charges) My heating is set at 16°c overnight and 18°c for the day. It seems to cost about 90p to heat it up to temperature on a morning and I don't think it can be on for more than about 30 mins to do this. It kicks in and out over the course of the day to keep it at 18 but so far this year we've never gone over about £3 in gas. Boiler is nearly 3 years old, set to eco. 3 bed semi, quite well insulated.

Wheretheskyisblue · 10/11/2022 20:28

We have a 38kwh boiler and it comes on at 6am and goes off when house reaches 18 degrees, normally takes a couple of hours and uses about 50kw gas, costs about £3 on old fixed tariff. 5 bed detached house so lot of area to heat.

If your SM isn’t working and you can’t get to the meter what are you doing for readings? Your bills will likely be estimates which will likely be higher. We had this for a while when our smart meter
stopped working and didn’t have a clue how to read the new meters. Ended up being refunded £300+

Madcats · 10/11/2022 20:42

Sadly, you are going to have to get to the meter and read it regularly.

Certainly round here it is abnormally mild. I keep seeing pics of DD with a snowman and sledging from 10 years ago whereas I am now nipping to the shops in a jumper with a brolly this week thinking it is a bit warm.

Read the meter at the same time per day for a week or two. Repeat once it gets colder.
