What do babies’ heads smell like?

Everyone raves about the scent of a baby’s head, but neither of my DC has a particularly distinct smell? Baby breath is very unique and sweet to me, but I don’t get the whole head-sniffing thing.

Mine smelled like parsnips- but in a really lovely way.
I suppose they smell of the inside of your womb, especially when brand new, which is a slightly unsettling thought.

I never understood this idea until I had my third, she smelled AMAZING! All girls, all EBF. Strange!

Popcorn, sunshine and pheromones

It's the smell of world peace
Like if you could bottle it and somehow send it out into the atmosphere so everyone could smell it and breathe it in...all the wars would stop.

minipie · 10/11/2022 22:01

Never smelled anything particular from either of my DDs’ heads. Both EBF.

Breast milk however does smell and taste like you’re all describing (like vanilla ice cream and sweet biscuits) so guess that makes sense. But never smelled it on the girls.

I’m not a naturally maternal person and didn’t love (ok, hated) the baby stage, maybe it’s related? Would baby smell have helped? Or did I not smell it because I don’t have the right hormonal response 😟

Delicious. Mine did anyway. Like love and sweetness and snuggling up to someone when you are absolutely loved up, and everything about them is good.

I wonder if the fact that I couldn't smell my baby was related to me absolutely hating having a newborn? I don't identify with what a lot of you are saying at all - it was the most hideous, anxious, terrifying, painful time, I was recovering from a c section and my nipples were blistered and raw. Mine was breastfed for 10 days but lost way too much weight and was jaundiced, was in and out of hospital for a few days, and I couldn't express enough for the doctors to be happy so went onto formula (thank god).

My cat smells of biscuits though.

This is the most beautiful thread 🥰

I never noticed any smell at all on DD. I didn’t get the smell thing at all.

I much prefer the smell of horses. They are divine.

Apollonia1 · 10/11/2022 23:17

I don't remember their heads smelling in particular, but there was a very distinctive scent off them. I think it was the smell of milk coming out their pores - they smelt totally different after drinking pre-made liquid formula, compared to powdered formula.

This is going to sound weird but mine smelt of a mixture of vanilla, sausages and black pepper.

I don't know if anyone remembers those "hedgehog" flavour crisps from the 80s but it was a bit like a sweeter version of that. Really distinctive and addictive!

Franticbutterfly · 11/11/2022 00:20

Mine didn't smell of anything. I always bathed them though so maybe I washed it off.

And the back of babies' necks 😍

This a million times. My phone is full of pictures of my DCs necks. DD is 5 and I still get a thrill from her neck.

KitchenSupper · 11/11/2022 06:34

You can’t always smell your own baby. Other babies smell great to me but I couldn’t smell my own (no PND or anything). I remember several people in the office saying independently that my son smelled of lilacs, but I couldn’t get a whiff of it.
In the early stages the baby smells of amniotic fluid, so what you are smelling is mostly fetal urine I guess.

waitingwaitingwaiting2 · 11/11/2022 21:57

Wouldnt you know this morning I’d be nursing DD at 4 am and have a strong whiff of butter and sweetness from her hairline, and remember that’s also the smell I’d get from DS. I suppose I do know what this biscuity smell is, and it is delightful, though still not as divine as the baby breath smell 👃👃👃 ahhhh
