What do babies’ heads smell like?

Everyone raves about the scent of a baby’s head, but neither of my DC has a particularly distinct smell? Baby breath is very unique and sweet to me, but I don’t get the whole head-sniffing thing.

Malted Milk biscuits with something else that I can't quite describe. It's addictive.

Mummyboy1 · 10/11/2022 13:23

Thank goodness its not just me!! When my baby was a newborn people would often snuggle him and take a deep breath/ sniff, and love his 'baby smell?!' .. I had no idea what they were smelling 😅

IDontWantToBeAPie · 10/11/2022 13:29

Slightly concerned now because my boyfriend sniffs my head and says I smell like biscuits all the time 😂

Am I a baby??

The inside of my dad's flat cap! Very specific I know 😂

@SalviaOfficinalis : DD is 4 weeks and EBF, so the smell (or lack of?) is not related to feed for us! I suppose her smell is buttery to me but not like biscuits! Her breath is what is massively intoxicating to me!

Can't explain it but I loved smelling my babies head. When you think where it's been though... 😂😂😂

Heaven rolled into pure, unadulterated love. It was slightly sweet. Mine are mid to late 20s now and I still remember the profoundness of it.

Mine smelt like sick and shit most of the time TBH.

StandingON · 10/11/2022 17:36

sweet almonds

Shesasuperfreak · 10/11/2022 17:39

Warm biscuits

Herejustforthisone · 10/11/2022 18:22

Hot, musky skin and brain.

I cannot stand the smell of babies’ heads. Even my own. Blurgh.

Chloefairydust · 10/11/2022 18:47

I think it’s a myth that whole baby smell 🤣

Yes they are usually tiny and cute but every baby I have ever met has smelled of that vommity sour milk smell, saliva, and sometimes more unpleasant smells when they need a nappy change haha… It’s a good thing they are cute lol.

I think the smell people like is actually a synthetic smell we associate with baby’s, that baby powder, soapy, kind of baby lotion smell but that’s not the baby it rather the products we use on babies. I do love the smell of baby lotion/ powder though!

Brain … OMG I laughed so hard at this 🤣 … I’m sure you can’t actually smell a brain 😆

Toast. Lovely.

SirenSays · 10/11/2022 18:51

They definitely have a smell, I'm just not sure it's a good one 🤢😅

Swapshopped · 10/11/2022 18:53

Gorgeousness. A smell that I can’t quite remember, but can’t forget. Oh there’s nothing like rubbing your cheek over their fluffy head and inhaling ❤️

Babies emit airborne molecules called pheromones. When the mother inhales them, the pheromones trigger a response in the mothers brain so she gets a powerful feeling of satisfaction and love. It helps the bonding process.

I didn’t get this. Then I gave babe formula and he smelt disgusting to me. DP thought I was being mad. Then we tried a different one and now he’s complaining poor boy smells odd 🤣

I love it when he doesn’t have a bottle and he gets that baby smell back. I think it’s part your smell so you don’t really realise it until it’s gone.

My DS’s smell changed as soon as I stopped breastfeeding at 3 months - he lost the delicious “baby” smell immediately.

So that might be a factor - would be interesting to know if people saying their baby didn’t smell of anything were formula feeding.

Yes this is us. See above. When I go back to bf exclusively it’s fine. Throw in a bottle of aptamil and I know how the birds who disown their young must function. He’s literally a different smell entirely and if I was blind I wouldn’t be able to pick him out of a line up.

Rosieisposy · 10/11/2022 20:43

Ds smelled like warm candy floss.

Lmgify · 10/11/2022 20:45

My first baby smelled amazing, like breast milk but sweeter and warmer. My second smells like nothing though but he has CMPA so his breath always smells a bit sour

Lmgify · 10/11/2022 20:49

Actually just thinking about it, she still smells good at 2.5

MadOnHer · 10/11/2022 20:49

I breastfed for a couple of months and then formula fed both of mine. I know the biscuity smell but I didn’t think it was ‘the most divine smell on earth’. Maybe I’m
a cold hearted bitch?!

i adored my babies but I didn’t swoon at the smell of their heads.

antiquisearchers · 10/11/2022 20:51

Awwww
<eyes teenagers' heads>
<decides against sniffing>

I remember thinking that breastfed baby breath smelled like butterscotch angel delight 😊

lurchermummy · 10/11/2022 20:57

I think the smell I remember most was when my DDs were first born and not yet bathed. It's probably hormonal. But I always said they smelled like toast. Literally could not stop sniffing them. Once bathed they just smelled clean apart from the cheesy smell that they sometimes get in their little neck folds. Still delicious. Mine are 21 and 18 now and I still love how they smell.

Same here - slightly sour milk!

Yes. Cheesy pooof
