2 year old. Sick bug. Will he choke over night?

The internet isn't giving me answers!

My two year old has a bug. He's been sick (large amounts) about five times today. The last time was about an hour ago and he's now clean and dry and fast asleep on his front in his cot. I have the monitor on full volume with me and our bedroom doors open.

Will he be safe overnight? Should I get him out his cot and bring him into my bed?

I wouldnt bring him into bed. You'll hear him and worry all night anyway and pop in.

RedRobyn2021 · 09/11/2022 19:54

Personally, I would be bringing him in with you or sleeping in his room. So the opposite of the last poster lol

LivingChess · 09/11/2022 19:54

I wouldn't want them in my bed unless I had a proper mattress cover. Usually I put a mattress on the floor of their room and bunked in there. Now they're older, I sleep on the sofa.

I'd have him in my bed.

StopsWalkingToSneeze · 09/11/2022 19:56

If you’re really worried do what you think is best for you and your child. Could you sleep In his room?

cantforthelifeofme · 09/11/2022 19:56

I'd be in the same room. Otherwise I'd worry and wouldn't sleep.

BiasedBinding · 09/11/2022 19:57

Mine has had a sickness bug this week. I brought them into my bed, which has a proper mattress protector, and we both slept on top of another duvet cover just in case

serenghetti2011 · 09/11/2022 19:57

Why would he choke? He’s 2, he’ll prob be sick then cry, none of my 4 ever choked they usually woke up puked everywhere then cried for me. he’s big enough to be ok in the cot with you listening out for him

LivingChess · 09/11/2022 19:57

Get a spare set of bedding ready (not within projectile distance). Plus spare pjs for you.
bucket or bin bag
bowl
pile of towels.
line the edge of the bed and floor by the bed with towels and those nappy mats if you have them.

Amoozbooze · 09/11/2022 19:58

I don't think you are supposed to put them on their front, if he is sick he will be face down in it. When they are in their back they will spit it out, the same as babies

roarfeckingroarr · 09/11/2022 19:58

Really mixed responses! I don't really care about my own bed. I've been covered in vomit and rinsed clothes / sheets / the baby so many times today I'm immune to caring 😂

He will get more rest in his own bed so I don't really want to wake him up and bring him in with me (already in bed, 7 months pregnant with number 2). But I'm scared just in case. DP is out watching football, won't be late or drunk, I'll ask him to sleep in the baby's room.

@Amoozbooze he always sleeps on his front, as do i when not pregnant.

Having read more responses I'm going to get him in a bit.

I’d sleep on the floor or a mattress in his room. In my experience you get a bit of fussing / warning that they are going to be sick again and can get them over a bucket rather than throw up on their sheets! I did this with 3 kids once and it was like a game of whack a mole!

roarfeckingroarr · 09/11/2022 20:01

Thanks everyone.

@LivingChess excellent advice, almost like you've done this before 😂

bravelittletiger · 09/11/2022 20:01

He's 2 so ignore the post about not putting them on his front- when they are old enough to move they can sleep in whatever position they find comfortable like adults do.

I've got a two year old and I wouldn't be sleeping on the floor or moving them into my bed. I would let him sleep off the bug. Tbh it wouldn't occur to me to worry about him choking at age 2. If he feels sick he will just wake himself up and be sick in his bed most likely and you will know about it!!

CaronPoivre · 09/11/2022 20:01

The answer is that is highly, highly unlikely that he’ll harm himself vomiting. Assumedly his stomach is now empty and so risk of vomiting is significantly reduced. The body is clever and children tend to wake to vomit unless actually unconscious- which tends not to be the case with tummy bugs.

As people suggest, have a bucket to hand beside his bed, a bucket of water with disinfectant to clean up. Some baby wipes and fresh clothing/nappy, lots of kitchen roll and a bin bag.

Think thats a good compromise. Whatever helps you sleep easier.

I just checked for some advice and it seems stomach is OK if not babies. I hope they are feeling better soon.

My DD had a spell of vomiting at night with no illness, temp etc so we saw the GP about it. I asked him about choking and he said children won't choke on vomit when they're sleeping because of our reflexes and the only people who choke on their vomit are drunk/unconscious (not sleeping) people.

tunthebloodyalarmoff · 09/11/2022 20:17

A two year old has more than enough strength in their neck to get them selves to the side and if his been sick loads it won't be lumpy enough anyway

Helenloveslee4eva · 09/11/2022 20:20

A toddler will clear there away if they vomit.
the reason you hear of excessively intoxicated people inhaling vomit is the intoxication ( drugs /alcohol ) not the vomit

Myleakycauldron · 09/11/2022 20:28

I always bring them in my bed and kick DH out when being sick - I can help them be sick in the bowl and tbh I worry so i wouldn't get much sleep anyway as would be checking etc.

pimlicoanna · 09/11/2022 20:32

I always bring them into bed with me if they are sick like this.

Isthatmcormac · 09/11/2022 21:23

Oh no 😷 I hope you manage to get some sleep and the little one feels better soon @roarfeckingroarr.
Wash your hands 5000000x times a day 🤣 DS (just turned 2) had it a few weeks ago and I ended up with it too. Typically, DH was away with work so I was trying to deal with a toddler with D&V while projectile vomiting myself 😅 it was quite a sight 🙈

My DS slept on his front the entire time - he does every night. As others have said, keep plenty towels/wipes etc to hand so you can do quick changes. DSs bug came on during the night - he knelt up and was sick while half asleep (first time he’s ever been sick since he was a tiny baby!) lay back down in it face first (😭) and had it all over him. Wouldn’t let me put him down while I ran about gathering stuff to clean him/his bed etc 🙈 projectiled all over my kitchen and bathroom and me. It was horrendous 🙈🤣 don’t be like me, be prepared 🙈
