Anyone just never THAT ill?

I may live to regret this thread, tempting fate and all that....

But is anyone else just never ill enough to be in bed all day?? I am always seeing on Instagram and Facebook people /influencers are ill in bed, so full of cold or whatever. I get colds but I just carry on with it, dose up with day nurse and be on my way!!

I remember once in the last 5 years since having kids I was in bed for a day with a sore throat but that was because I was heavily pregnant and absolutely terrified it was covid, and didn't want to pass anything on to my other kids and DH. I wasn't actually ill, more scared!!

I actually crave a day in a cosy bed with a book, hot drinks on tap 😅😅

I've had real flu and I've had COVID, they're the only times a bug has left me in bed. They've also left me with lung damage and breathing difficulties which mean colds turn nasty pretty quickly, so yes you may be able to carry on with the sniffles but not all of us can sadly.

mast0650 · 09/11/2022 17:03

I wonder how old you are?

I'm 51 (see my "never ill" response) above. Husband is 61 and the same. My mum was the same until she got a cancer at 65 and died at 66. I am under no illusions that I am immortal! In fact I think awareness of my mortality means I don't want to waste it on a duvet day!

SisterAgatha · 09/11/2022 17:15

Key difference between flu and generic cold viruses is the speed of which they come on

Additionally the pressure of a temperature. Colds rarely give you a temperature.

My flu took 2 months to recover from, I never fully recovered till I had the baby.

When I was 21 I came down with flu very suddenly at work. I got home and spent the next two weeks delirious and it was a further 4 weeks before I was back at work. I lost about a stone and a half.

A total of 6 weeks off work. I religiously have a jab each year.

This is the start of my fourth year in a school. I catch lots of things! Most recently was a 24 hour vomiting bug. I felt hideous and was in bed, but ok next day. Today I've come home, had paracetamol and a nap, I'm not sure if it's going to develop into 'something' or just as a result of a noisy class!

DH is rarely hardly ever ill. He worked outside for 40 years. He's very unsympathetic, but at least he never catches anything from me so can hold the fort!

soberfabulous · 09/11/2022 17:45

Never ill here either OP. Ten years since I had a cold.

I take really good care of myself, exercise a lot, eat well and take loads of vitamins. I know people scoff at vitamins sometimes but hey; I'm super healthy and feel great so I'll continue to take them!

DatasCat · 09/11/2022 17:49

Does anyone ever NOT get floored with norovirus? I have a bad sick phobia and would love to hear anyone… just one person… say it’s not so bad!!! Or at least not terrifying! 🙈

It is possible to get a ‘mild’ form of noro where you’re only sick a couple of times in the night and then just sleep it off. And some people carry the virus but don’t show symptoms. That’s how it spreads!

(And to add to the fun, 48 hours is nowhere near long enough to clear the virus from your system. It hangs around for a week after you feel better. Try telling that to your employer/child’s school teacher. 🙄)

Turmerictolly · 09/11/2022 17:58

Me, until 2020 when I got floored by covid and developed pneumonia out of the blue - mid 50's. Now every other cold goes to my chest and the fatigue and pleural pain return and I'm in bed for 2-3 days.

GreenShadow · 09/11/2022 18:01

Yep. I've not had a day off work in my current job and been there 16+ years.

I've never had flu or a serious illness. I did eventually catch Covid last month but it was so mild it wasn't even as bad a cold and I just worked from home.

I think in previous jobs I had one day off for sickness and maybe a half day for a really bad headache but then spoilt it all by having a miscarriage and needing over a week off! I am now almost at retirement age, so not bad going.

I take vitamins and other supplements, eat well, I exercise 3/4 days a week and walk everywhere. I still pick up every bloody cold going from my germ-ridden toddler and I've had covid twice despite having all the jabs.

I blame my parents for fucking my lungs with passive smoking.

Athenen0ctua · 09/11/2022 18:27

Agree with others saying that you can get mild 'flu, it's the virus that makes it 'flu not the severity. A nasty cold can be more debilitating. You can often tell from the symptoms or if you are a contact of other cases.

My sibling was at school with pneumonia, they had been off sick then sent back in after a few days. Only found out after going to the GP as they weren't getting better.

I've never been ill enough that I had to be in bed all day either. Feverish night, or watching Netflix on the sofa feeling a bit crap, yes.

CantSleepCountingSheep · 09/11/2022 18:47

About once a year yes.

Wallywobbles · 09/11/2022 19:00

The 2nd time I had pneumonia I was completely out of it, delirium, the works. A mate came in every evening to put me in the bath and change my sheets. I lost 2 dress sizes in a week. And that's how I spent my 40th birthday. Upside never been able to smoke since.

Hbh17 · 09/11/2022 19:01

I am nearly 60 and have never had flu - so many people think they have flu when it's just a bad cold.
Haven't had a day off sick for 12 years (hope I'm not tempting fate!).
Over the years, only the occasional day in bed with a tummy bug.
I think there are people who are far too quick to claim they are sick - contrast those who are self-employed with employees, and there will probably be quite a difference.

georgarina · 09/11/2022 19:02

Depends on the illness I think. I've had bad viruses that have properly taken me out and I've just been feverish, aching and exhausted sleeping in bed all day. Recently we got something vile and even my hyperactive 4 year old was sleeping all day with it.

A580Hojas · 09/11/2022 19:04

I have had the odd day ill in bed for most of the day. Can't remember staying in bed all day though! even after 3 operations under GA the hospital staff got me out of bed and sitting up.

The most ill I have ever been was a chest infection in 2018 and another chest infection earlier this year. I might have been a bit useless for a few days during those but not actually stayed in bed all day. They lasted about 2-3 weeks both times.

Aworldofmyown · 09/11/2022 19:05

I was 'bedridden' about 14 years ago (I know because it was before DD) I suspect it was flu. Since then I've been ill, and would have liked to stay in bed but been able to keep going!

Varasnapars · 09/11/2022 19:13

I got the flu 10 years ago. It makes me so angry when people say they have flu when they are clearly standing in front of you able to function. I couldn't move, I was so ill. I can't even describe my symptoms now but I remember being absolutely freezing with terrible muscle pain in my legs and back. I had absolutely no strength. I knew there were paracetamol downstairs but my husband had gone out. I went down the stairs on my bottom as I couldn't stand up. I remember at the time thinking 'now I understand how people die from the flu'. About 3 days later I could walk and felt a bit better. I went to the walk-in clinic and spoke to a practice nurse. I just sobbed as I had felt so awful and had been so ill with my husband away for the weekend. It took me a long time to recover fully but left me with weakness in my back and the membranes in my eyes (strangely) that still flare up over a decade later. I had no symptoms with Covid but this flu I had years ago was the sickest I had ever been.

turtledovelove · 09/11/2022 19:20

One of the only times that I can remember being physically unable to get out of bed due to illness was when I was heavily pregnant with my youngest - virtually 3 years ago to the day.

Covid wasn't quite a thing yet however had I known then what I know now I would have been convinced it was Covid! The cough was horrific so much so that I thought I'd cracked a rib from coughing so much. My bump didn't allow for much room to breath anyway. I felt ghastly and even had to call my mum to take my older children to school. I've never not been able to get out of bed for them before.

Thankfully it's rare I get ill....touching lots of wood now!!

luckylavender · 09/11/2022 13:26

Nobody can 'carry on' with flu. Anyone who says they can doesn't have flu.

That’s absolute rubbish. You can even have asymptomatic flu.

bluetongue · 09/11/2022 20:25

Yes, and if you have symptoms then they tend to be different to a cold. Rapid onset, fever, muscle aches, headache, more likely to be the 'flu.

Ocampa · 09/11/2022 23:26

Cholera, proper flu and norovirus all had me abdolutely floored.

The sniffles? Nah, can still do stuff.

DatasCat · 12/11/2022 20:09

There were some properly nasty bugs circulating when my DCs were little; the sort of colds that put you in bed with throat and ear infections (and might have been a type of coronavirus for all we know).

When I was still a student I went down with a really horrible flu bug, which today might well have looked like Covid - hacking cough, high temperature, and every time I seemed to be recovering I got knocked back worse than ever. Took me a full fortnight to be up and about, and I still felt knackered for another fortnight.

Doublevision5 · 12/11/2022 20:14

So you've never had actual flu then! I had it for the first time in 2019, I literally spent a full week in bed. I had chills, full body aches, I was too weak to reach over and change what I was watching on the telly so I just watched whatever netflix automatically played next. A proper flu virus genuinely does knock you out.

Athenen0ctua · 12/11/2022 20:34

A proper flu virus genuinely does knock you out.
Myth. 'Flu does not always make you more ill than a cold. You can have mild 'flu or severe cold symptoms.

Ragwort · 12/11/2022 20:56

No ... I have been incredibly fortunate with my health, had the occasional cold and maybe had an early night or afternoon nap but never been so ill that I couldn't get out of bed. Never had Covid. I think it just down to luck and good genes ... I absolutely don't lead a healthy lifestyle... no exercise, over eat and drink and don't have much fruit or veg ... and mix with the public Grin. Just good luck Confused.
