Anyone just never THAT ill?

I may live to regret this thread, tempting fate and all that....

But is anyone else just never ill enough to be in bed all day?? I am always seeing on Instagram and Facebook people /influencers are ill in bed, so full of cold or whatever. I get colds but I just carry on with it, dose up with day nurse and be on my way!!

I remember once in the last 5 years since having kids I was in bed for a day with a sore throat but that was because I was heavily pregnant and absolutely terrified it was covid, and didn't want to pass anything on to my other kids and DH. I wasn't actually ill, more scared!!

I actually crave a day in a cosy bed with a book, hot drinks on tap 😅😅

I’m a pretty sickly person and always catching colds. DP on the other hand never catches anything. I’ve known him 4.5 years and he’s not even had so much as a cold in that time. He’s not particularly healthy food wise but does a job that requires him to be outside for 8+ hours a day so I do wonder if that helps.

He did have Covid once but only knew because he had to take a test to get into a concert.

TheRookie · 09/11/2022 13:49

I'm not including chronic illness and make no comment regarding chronic illness either. That is completely different. I have stated colds which we all get. Of course chronic illness is awful and I don't think anyone needs to comment on how they're so lucky not to be actually ill with a life altering illness.

I am clearly talking about people on the internet, including influencers and people at my work who are always bedridden with colds and bugs. I may be just fortunate that I don't come down with things as badly as others but I was just looking for anecdotal stories of illness to see if I am in the minority or not. Jeez. Why does everything have to get so god damn serious here.

I am afraid to say anything too as it is tempting fate but I am never ill.The last time was laid up in bed was 2011 with some sort of tummy bug (Norovirus)that I picked up at a soft play area when there with my kids.I was really sick then barely able to stand and the time before that was after moving Stateside in 2003 and picked up some bug that led to sinusitis that took ages to shift.Other than that I was never sick at school and didn't miss a day for 10 years .Never missed work either as a nurse for years and years until I had wisdom teeth removed .I count my lucky stars that I never get colds or flu and still haven't had Covid despite being in close contact with it umpteen times .I do have massive problems with one leg though that has really caused me heartache after a bad break when I was young so its not all plain sailing .I do try my best to soldier on with it but sometimes it is just too painful.

I'm not often that ill, no.

Covid wiped me out. As did norovirus. One bad bout of labyrinthitis had me out of action for nearly 2 weeks. But all this is spaced over a decade of my working life.

EBearhug · 09/11/2022 13:53

Nobody can 'carry on' with flu. Anyone who says they can doesn't have flu.

Not necessarily - flu can be asymptomatic or like a mild cold as much as it can confine people to bed for a week. Unless you actually test for it (which we don't,) you might not know you have it. It's like covid in that sense - it can kill, but others will be pretty much unaffected.

ChickpeaPie · 09/11/2022 13:57

The only thing that has sent me to bed is a bad migraine when I vomit if I open my eyes. Luckily haven’t had any since o stopped using hormonal contraceptives (touch wood)

adiosamigoo · 09/11/2022 14:03

I’ve been literally dying (blood clots in my body and lungs, barely able to breathe) but still got up and looked after my children

TastesLikeFlavourlessFizz · 09/11/2022 14:04

Covid put me in bed for 3 days (flu-like symptoms and the headache from hell) and I'm still knackered a week after testing negative but I consider that mild on the spectrum of covid!

I do sometimes take to my bed on a weekend day because I have a crazy job and a chronic condition that can leave me absolutely ruined. And sometimes I lie down for a bit if I have a migraine or my insomnia has been bad. Those are all a bit different though. I'm not actually bedridden and I would very, very rarely take time off work for those.

Years ago, food poisoning had me in bed for about 4 days. I remember lying on the bathroom floor thinking I was about to die and not really caring if I did.

Agree with @luckylavender that nobody can carry on with (symptomatic) flu. I've not had it but I've seen others with it and it absolutely brings them to their knees for a week or two.

adiosamigoo · 09/11/2022 14:04

The only thing is sometimes I have horrendous period pain and I can’t get off the toilet for about 2 days, and have to take time off work. But it’s once every few months it’s that bad. Colds and flu there’s absolutely no need to lay in bed all day

Blankspace35 · 09/11/2022 14:06

Ive only been that ill twice in my life, the first I had flu and could just about crawl to the toilet, my husband had to take a week off work to look after our baby

the second was when i had covid and i was pretty much the same

both times the last thing id be doing was posting on social media though

mickandrorty · 09/11/2022 14:16

The kids got a sickness bug while i was still recovering from covid, was up all night sorting them out, then i came down with it! I slept for 20 hours straight after that. It wasn't cute pictures in bed with tissues etc posted on Instagram though i felt like absolute death.

DarkAndDusty · 09/11/2022 14:19

The only time (thankfully) I have ever been genuinely bed ridden was with a sudden crazy flu that lasted 1 day. Aches, chills, weakness... could barely make it across my flat it to the loo. Couldn't eat.

But yeah I don't buy it when people (especially my DH) claim to be incapacitated by normal colds

CassandraBarrett · 09/11/2022 14:19

I was sick for about a week at the age of 19. Probably flu (not just a bad cold).
Was sick for two days at the age of about 28 - stomach bug I picked up from house mate.
Then spent about a week in bed last year with a bad cold. Was heavily pregnant and probably very tired in addition to the cold. That's it for me. (I'm 40 now so 2 weeks possibly 3 weeks total sick days ever!)

fleurdelee · 09/11/2022 14:21

I am basically like the influencers
Get sick a lot
It's very boring

MavisChunch29 · 09/11/2022 14:24

Not these days. I've had jobs that were stressful and made me ill previously. I never need sick days now.

The closest I came was when we had an online management meeting last year, I'd just come down with a cough and cold and had to leave the meeting as I felt unwell.

But I was fine the next day. When I had Covid I worked from home - there was one day I felt very unwell but it was at the weekend and I felt ok by Monday- just tired. I did shorter days though and finished earlier so I could lie down. If I didn't have the sort of job where I could do that then I'd have had to have taken sick days.

coffeeandcakeat10 · 09/11/2022 14:26

I sometimes need to spend a day in bed.

I am unsure what it is and very lucky to live a life where I can and it took A LOT for me to break it to my partner.

I don't know what or why... every 3/4 weeks I was having a week where I just couldn't do life. I'd be tired have brain fog, unable to concentrate, unable to have a conversation and this would go on for days UNTIL I stopped life, laid in bed, slept, stayed in the house doing general cleaning and looking after the kids.. not going out etc.

But what I soon came to realise is, if I give in to my brain fog and tiredness when it comes and lay in bed for one day... the next day I am back to normal, whereas if I try and fight it.. then it lasts for days on end.

It was hard to admit to this, I see laying in bed as lazy, I then get guilt which makes me worse... but I mentally can't help it. Every 3/4 weeks I know it's coming.

My post probably makes no sense, but this is my life and I have no idea why I'm like it.

MavisChunch29 · 09/11/2022 14:26

The longest period I've had off is two weeks when I had a laparoscopy but that was 7 years ago. Fine since, thank goodness. If my endometriosis flared up again then I'd definitely feel too unwell to work.

OnABreeze · 09/11/2022 14:27

I currently am in bed with the flu but then I'd never be in bed with just a sore throat.

newnamenellie · 09/11/2022 14:33

Occasionally, yes. A couple of weeks ago I had some sort of virus that turned into a chest infection and although I didn't actually stay in bed, I was laid on the sofa for a couple of days, totally wiped out. The last time I was ill like that was about ten years ago, otherwise, I would just crack on with a cold or minor bug or whatever.

CrunchyCarrot · 09/11/2022 14:34

Heavy colds and occasional flu put me in bed during my childhood, teens, 20s and 30s. After that I have had far fewer illnesses, but I am housebound now so rarely see other people apart from DP who is hardly ever ill. The most recent thing I had was Covid a month ago and I was in bed for a week with that.

JustDanceAddict · 09/11/2022 14:34

I had suspected covid in March 2020 and literally could barely move from bed for a couple of days except for the loo and staggered down to make toast as rest of household were at school/work. My temp was over 38 and felt like poo. Dh brought me dinner in bed but my appetite was shot.

When I actually tested positive for covid a year later I didn’t feel as bad but still spent a couple of days mainly in bed/on sofa.

Resting is best when ill anyway. With a cold I dose up and get on with it. It’s the high temp that knocks me out.

newnamenellie · 09/11/2022 14:37

I think if you have young children, then yes, this can happen. I had a dreadul chest infection when my youngest was a baby and my older one had just started school. I remember how awful it was trying to rest in between school runs and looking after the little one. I think this makes the illness last longer though, as (mentioned in my post above), I've just had a similar illness, but my children are older now and can look after me. I recovered quicker, definitely!

Claudia84 · 09/11/2022 14:42

I think there are people that don't like to take things like night nurse etc so sleeping it off is the best option.
but then again I think influencers are very much doing it for the gram. I would not want ANY photos of me on the internet when I'm feeling ill. They can't actually be feeling that bad. There's probably a throw in the background or a bed set they've got to advertise.

PeloFondo · 09/11/2022 14:46

I'm immunocompromised so I'm sick about every couple of months (very understanding job)
Mostly tonsillitis or kidney infections that are uncomfortable enough I can't work (or have no voice)
When I'm really sick I often don't realise it, so was out shopping with pneumonia Blush drive myself to a&e with cauda equina type thing

I never was until I hit about 30 and went down hill from there, I now have a chronic illness and on immunosuppressant medication and lots of illnesses now totally floor me and take weeks to recover.
We used to joke about how I could deal with the sick kids in the family as I never got ill. Jokes on me now unfortunately.

Had to check that I hadn't already posted as this is very much me. Currently off work with tonsillitis, awful fever, and just feel drained in general.
