Cultured folk! Who are the photographers that capture ordinary lives?

That is it! That is the question. I am trying find good photographers where they have gone out and just photographed the ordinary world around them - I remember some about the working class of Liverpool from the 70s but can't remember who it was after Googling. Could be from any area - but I want the idea of people in a natural everyday environment, and being looked at uncritically.

No ulterior motive - I am just trying to broaden my interest in an ongoing research project.

James Ravilious? 50s and 60s I think.

Not the one you're thinking of, but Martin Parr is a classic documentary photographer with a distinctive style.

I love Tish Martha's photos.

The last resort is collection of photographs of New Brighton in the 80s. I don't know about uncritical - as the title implies it documents how run down the place was. It's local to me and happily can report it's a lot nicer and cleaner now, though sadly the outdoor pools are long gone.

Don McCullin may be who you are thinking of re Liverpool. But he was most famously a war photographer. Big retrospective at the Tate (and Tate Liverpool) a few years ago.

There's just been a great exhibition in Salts Mill of work by Ian Beesley who captured photographs of people in Bradford over the years.

Look up Chris Killip or Phil Kneen

This is a v good site for 20th century photographers and their archives. Very evocative, gritty and mostly working class, lost neighbourhoods, 60s,70s and 80s.

Check out Bruce Gilden

I was going to say Martin Parr, who I see pp have mentioned. I always get the feeling he’s being a bit snide though.

www.brucegilden.com/ I get addicted to looking at them.

There's also Peter Mitchell who captured Leeds.

I also came on to say Martin Parr. But he hasn't photographed Liverpool. Or at least I don't think ao

Check out the bloody wonderful Vivian Maier: www.vivianmaier.com

The story of how her work was discovered is excellent too!

Sorry to come to this thread so late but wanted to add the amazing Shirley Baker. Manchester/Salford, not Liverpool shirleybakerphotography.com/ but her photos are brilliant.
And also, more modern, Chris Porcz. Such interesting photos of everyday life changing through time in Peterborough. Not where you were looking for but I really enjoy them.
