Cultured folk! Who are the photographers that capture ordinary lives?

That is it! That is the question. I am trying find good photographers where they have gone out and just photographed the ordinary world around them - I remember some about the working class of Liverpool from the 70s but can't remember who it was after Googling. Could be from any area - but I want the idea of people in a natural everyday environment, and being looked at uncritically.

No ulterior motive - I am just trying to broaden my interest in an ongoing research project.

Both explore subculture. I was a kid when I discovered their work and couldn’t unsee it. I absolutely adore photography and had the pleasure of working with many great fashion photographers in my youth. But fashion photography didn’t do much for me. I love delving into the gritty subculture.
Vivian Maier was mentioned above. What an extraordinary story!

And Dorothea Lange… old school, gritty, iconic photography.

The Hannah Starkey exhibition at the Hepworth in Wakefield is worth a look. Love her photos of women.

Craig Easton - he was interviewed last week on R4 here. Sounded an interesting and kind man, good views on what documentary photos are for

Not sure where you are based OP, but the Whitworth Art Gallery in Manchester currently has a exhibition about wallpaper which includes some wonderful photographs of people and their homes, including some of the photos Martin Parr took in 1970s(?) Manchester.
