I know this has probably been asked so many times but in current times with the prices of food going up what are you spending for a family of 4 or similar size?

2 adults, 2 dc aged 8&12 so no nappies etc and one small dog. Dog doesn't cost us much at all, she is very petite and doesn't eat a huge amount in one go!

we are spending around £100 a week on a big food shop - Tesco delivery as it is easier for us living where we do and a top up which can vary wildly but could easily spend £50 on a top up per week. This all includes toilet roll, cleaning products, dog food and treats etc.

I get a shop delivered on a Monday and it's all gone by the weekend so it's not going far!

we don't really buy branded stuff other than the odd thing, I try and meal plan. It's hard because DS is autistic and has extreme issues with foods so have to but what his current safe food is - currently it is wedges and bacon 🤷‍♀️He likes scotch pancakes for breakfast but does not like the taste of the standard Tesco pancakes and only eats warburtons 🤦‍♀️

what are others spending?

We are two adults and DCs aged 13 and 11. We spend £150 a week. That includes household products and toiletries.

bagelsandcheese · 07/11/2022 19:52

Family of four two oids, 10 and 8, spending around 130 asda delivery, and around 50-60 top ups. That includes everything, cleaning products alcohol ect.. keep trying to get it down but seems impossible.

gisajob123 · 07/11/2022 19:54

Averaging £140 from Tesco once a week & approx £40 top up.. family of 4- 2 kids early teens. Includes packed lunches for them, not dog food, all cleaning stuff.. it's insane. Used to be around £100 with £30 to up this time last year.

OldEnoughToHaveReadBunty · 07/11/2022 19:55

Family of 5. Me, DH, DS1 25, DS2 21 & 11 year old DD. Plus 2 cats. Around £150 but it's very noticeable that just months ago our average weekly spend was £90 to £100.

CatSeany · 07/11/2022 19:55

£150 per week for us as a family with two kids aged 2 and 1. Includes all toiletries and cleaning products etc.

Heatherbell1978 · 07/11/2022 20:01

Family of 4 - DC are 5 and 8. Weekly Tesco delivery shop of £50, SimplyCook box of £10 and then about £30-40 top up shops at Lidl and Aldi. So yep about £100 a week.

somanybooks · 07/11/2022 20:04

I get a shopping delivery around every 10 days that's ~£150 plus around £20 top ups - so around £120pw. This includes cat food, and lunches for us all. Family of 4 inc two tweens.

There's one delivery driver who regularly comments how we have a such a lot of food and he wouldn't like to be paying for it, but it's just a standard vegetarian big shop with mostly value ranges and offers, and I cook most things from scratch. I think I get a lot for the money compared to how bad it could be. Rude delivery driver!

rainbowandglitter · 07/11/2022 20:07

4 in our house and we spend about £80-£100 pw but then get a takeaway once a week.

User0ne · 07/11/2022 20:10

Family of 5 (me, DH, 6yr, 4yr and 18m DC), we spend £490 a month. It's always tight and we eat a lot more baked beans than we used to

Theydoyaknow · 07/11/2022 20:13

About £200. We also get takeaway once a week.

beaconofsanity · 07/11/2022 20:16

2 adults and 2 ds, 11 & 12. We spend about £60 in Lidl (inc some wine!) and a tenner on milk man per week plus £22 on oddbox fortnightly. Both boys have school dinners so that's probably another £30-40 pw. Quite a lot when you add it up!

Season0fTheWitch · 07/11/2022 20:16

Family of 5 here but youngest is 2 months old, so removing the cost of her nappies, our weekly big shop is between £100-150. Top up shop usually around £10 for milk and bread in the middle of the week. Plus once a month I pop to B&M for a big cleaning products shop- around £40

Meredusoleil · 07/11/2022 20:18

2 adults and 2 dc (14 and 10). About £100 weekly + top ups + 1 take away. So £150 sounds about right with a pet!

DinosApple · 07/11/2022 20:20

Two adults, 13yo and nearly 12yo (one fussy veggie). Approx £100/week at Tesco. Sometimes it's closer to £110. Try hard not to top up shop. Bulk buy toilet rolls. Don't eat much meat. No takeaways. Booze rarely.

I usually get it delivered on a Friday night so we always have lots in for the weekend and it's easier to bulk up the following weekday meals (usually a few freezer meal nights).

Winceybincey · 07/11/2022 20:29

I went through my bank statements back to January and my weekly shop averaged between ££65-£100. For the past 6 weeks it’s been £120-£170. The jump is insane but I can’t see where we can cut back. We have two toddlers and this doesn’t include nappies and wipes but the earlier shops included formula that we stopped buying in May. It’s mental.

MrsTopaz · 07/11/2022 20:34

family of 4 (me, DH, 12yo, 8yo) spend £75/80 per week. Tesco, but I try to match as much as possible to the Aldi price match. getting harder each week!

Cottagecheeseisnotcheese · 07/11/2022 20:49

family of 3 main shop £50, £30 top up shops £15 dinner money for DD occasional coffee lunch out another £10 ( though more likely £20 one weke and nothing the next) so just over a £100 includes cleaning and toiletries in fact anything form supermarket
I don't think £150 all in is bad for a family of 4 could be less, ours could but we like meat, free range eggs nice cheese etc and DH has to be lowish carbs to stop diabetes which he has reversed so no bulking out meals with bread potatoes etc

MyIgloo · 07/11/2022 21:28

Family of 4, 2 x adults and 2 x older (not yet teenagers)

Im spending around £150 a week a mix of tesco and aldi…(aldi fruit and veg is rubbish at our local store hence the tesco shop) nothing overly extravagant and neither dh or I really drink alcohol 🤷‍♀️

I am not buying much different to what I used to get for around £90-100

We don’t really get treat bits anymore either and I’ve cut back on meat.

OldWivesTale · 07/11/2022 21:36

About 160 plus 30 -40 ish on a takeaway

mrsfeatherbottom · 07/11/2022 23:00

£400 a month (DH & I plus 15yo and 12yo). Doesn't include dog food or toilet rolls but does include cleaning products. I do a weekly online Sainsburys shop but usually end up buying a few top up things. Don't eat much meat and hardly any alcohol.

Veggielove84 · 22/06/2023 22:07

I know this is an older thread but I was going to make one as I have an Autistic daughter and both of my children are very fussy, its pretty stressful and expensive and I need more ideas. I cant just make a family meal as its me and hubby and then both kids different ages and some nights not same meals. Wy wont eat (throws away at the first sight/touch) potato, rice, only eats pre made mac and cheese and pizza and chicken nuggets and snacks tonnes as wont eat much at meal times. I'm finding I'm spending so much on food every week and we could be doing so much more with the money.

Veggielove84 · 22/06/2023 22:09

I see on some budget advice places to try and aim for 100 a month for each person in the family so we are 4 so 400 a month but its way more than that currently. I wonder if that's just for the groceries and not all the other toilet rolls, foil etc

Mingomang · 22/06/2023 22:12

I’m getting on for £200 a week tbh, maybe £250. Always buy free range meat and have meat most days. Kids 7 and 11 and petite dog also!
That includes a decent bottle of wine every week.
I do buy a lot of brands and I don’t know why that is. I think it’s just because it’s on the favourites on the Ocado app. I am going to make an effort this week to try and swap the brands out.
The way we eat hasn’t changed but the price has almost doubled.

Is that for adults/teens or an average of adults and children? A family of two adults and two young children wouldn't need to spend as much as a family of four adult sized people.

Purplefoalfoot · 22/06/2023 22:36

£150 for us and two kids age 1 & 3 & DDog
