I know this has probably been asked so many times but in current times with the prices of food going up what are you spending for a family of 4 or similar size?

2 adults, 2 dc aged 8&12 so no nappies etc and one small dog. Dog doesn't cost us much at all, she is very petite and doesn't eat a huge amount in one go!

we are spending around £100 a week on a big food shop - Tesco delivery as it is easier for us living where we do and a top up which can vary wildly but could easily spend £50 on a top up per week. This all includes toilet roll, cleaning products, dog food and treats etc.

I get a shop delivered on a Monday and it's all gone by the weekend so it's not going far!

we don't really buy branded stuff other than the odd thing, I try and meal plan. It's hard because DS is autistic and has extreme issues with foods so have to but what his current safe food is - currently it is wedges and bacon 🤷‍♀️He likes scotch pancakes for breakfast but does not like the taste of the standard Tesco pancakes and only eats warburtons 🤦‍♀️

what are others spending?

Is that for adults/teens or an average of adults and children? A family of two adults and two young children wouldn't need to spend as much as a family of four adult sized people.

good point, I don't know it just said 100 a month each person but I don't really know ages etc. I am going to try aim for 100 a week, I still have a child in nappies mind you and we do drink a more expensive milk ( Goat milk) about 5 or more cartons a week I think.

Family of 5 dc aged 6,5 and 1 and a cat. We spend £400-450 a month. We do really budget though and I cook
from scratch, no brands, lots of veggie nights,
lentils/ pulses. I’d like to be able to spend more really but we can’t currently.

Isyesterdaytomorrowtoday · 22/06/2023 22:44

A lot! Couple of years ago c£100pw, 6months ago £150pw, now I’m scared to add it up but probably around the £180 mark.

kids have school lunches and that doesn’t usually include any alcohol either 😫

doingthehokeykokey · 22/06/2023 22:45

I’ve just worked out we are hitting £180. 2 adults, 2 teens. That’s insane as we eat well, but not much meat. Lots of veg and salad stuff. I don’t buy brands, except Fage.

Fuck that’s a lot.

Family of 9 £150 a week in two supermarket deliveries. No top ups never set foot inside an actual supermarket.

I get a shopping delivery around every 10 days that's ~£150 plus around £20 top ups - so around £120pw. This includes cat food, and lunches for us all. Family of 4 inc two tweens.

There's one delivery driver who regularly comments how we have a such a lot of food and he wouldn't like to be paying for it, but it's just a standard vegetarian big shop with mostly value ranges and offers, and I cook most things from scratch. I think I get a lot for the money compared to how bad it could be. Rude delivery driver!

That would piss me off! It’s none of his blinking business how much food you buy 🙄

Blooming heck! You do well spending that with 9 of you.

I am 2 adults and 2 small children .eldest child has free school meals and younger one is looked after 3 days by family so doesnt have lunch at home.

My budget is £450 which includes dog food as part of that. Even the dogs food has gone up massively. It's hard for me to track though as I usually keep a big stock of cleaning stuff, toiletries and toilet rolls etc so I'm not buying them on a regular basis but more as a one off and stocking them up. I try and use the Butchers to get quality meat, spend a small fortune on fruit and dont buy any alcohol.

I've cut back on chocolate, biscuits, juice, crisps and takeaways to be honest. No longer buy coke. I do like a brand but I've switched to aldi beans, Ketchup, mayonnaise. I can't seem to give up the branded cereal though, cheaper stuff doesn't taste the same.

I cook alot at home, don't buy ready meals, dont eat fish as often as if like and we've started having omelette and jacket potato on the menu a bit more regularly for some cheaper meals. And I have started using the fruit and veg man too, much nicer better quality although not sure it is much cheaper.

Whilst i can afford to buy food and have a bigger budget, it is a sad state of affairs when everyday people who work hard really have to think hard about a food shop.

2 x adult 2 x DC 10 & 12, 1 x Dog 1 x Cat

Food shop day today, £134 in Aldi, £38 in Asda. Includes pet food but nothing like shampoo/laundry stuff etc.

😒

Icannoteven · 22/06/2023 22:53

Around 140 for us with about 30 top up. 2 adults, 2 kids (one kid gluten free who has packed lunch for school), 1 dog, 1cat.

Our shopping bill has literally doubled since pre Covid days. It’s scary.

Fandabedodgy · 22/06/2023 22:55

2 adults and 2 DC (14 and 10)

We spend about £150 a week on supermarket food and might have a takeaway too

Scottishdreams1991 · 22/06/2023 22:55

Bloody hell family of 5 and we spend 300 per week

BloodandGlitter · 22/06/2023 22:58

3 adults and a 10 year old. £110 a week? £75ish with M&S - they always have "new" customers offers on of £20 off. Then maybe £35 on top up bits.

tunainatin · 22/06/2023 23:09

Family of 4 with similar age children, no pets, I think about £100 a week including top ups. I'm not including school dinners in that though, which adds another 20 apart from school hols. One takeaway a week for around £20. So similar.

NewNovember · 22/06/2023 23:16

curlywurlylover666 · 22/06/2023 22:49

That's pretty impressive!

It is just food , nappies, shower gel and toothpaste tbf and no alcohol we don't drink, things like toilet roll , dishwasher tablets, laundry detergent, baby wipes, shampoo etc are on amazon subscribe and save.

Mothwingdust · 23/06/2023 00:39

We spend around £120 PWit’s four of us for half the week and three the rest, all adults with two with big appetites plus a cat

I have time to be able to do a series of small shops though. Today I got a bunch of asparagus for 33p and two bags of salad for 50p each. This includes lunches for all three every day.

fertu · 23/06/2023 00:51

£180-£200 per week Tesco delivery, no top ups. Two older teens so 4 adult appetites. But not toiletries or loo roll. We do buy more convenience stuff and premium range than necessary, and we eat meat every day, and lots of fresh fruit, so could cut it down if we needed to.

IneedcoffeeinanIV · 23/06/2023 01:05

£200 a month for 2 adults and 2 kids. I am obsessed with lists and budgeting though when it comes to the food shop. We do still pick up milk and fruit ect each week though so roughly £250 a month

Passthecake30 · 23/06/2023 06:50

About £650 a month, 2 adults and 2 teens. The teens eat more than us, large portions and constant snacks. It includes beer for dp for fri&sat nights and a 1-2 bottles of wine a week - we rarely go out. I save money as don’t buy lamb or beef, mainly eat chicken and pork which are cheaper. I also stock up on things when on offer and have a well stocked larder and toiletries cupboard.

MrsSamR · 23/06/2023 07:36

2 adults, 3 year old and 8 month old. We get an online delivery once a week and spend about £120 (that includes formula, toiletries etc) and then we do top up shops as needed.

doingthehokeykokey · 23/06/2023 07:38

My £180 includes all toiletries and cleaning stuff, period products (2DD) and we all eat 3 meals a day from home.

I think these bills can vary a lot when it’s ‘just’ food. We very rarely eat a takeaway. Im still shocked though!
