I presume there are a good mix here from all backgrounds, but I guess it depends on the commentators and which threads, to get different perspectives

RJnomore1 · 07/11/2022 13:23

I presume at least 90% of them are talking utter shite tbh

PortiasBiscuit · 07/11/2022 13:26

Where are these people, can’t really say I’ve come across them..?

So you are one of them

Everyone is in different situations. For those of us who are older, we often have been in tight money situations but things are better now - we weren't born with silver spoons!

workiskillingme · 07/11/2022 13:31

For me it's more the attitude that people display 'omg people would eat chicken from a supermarket??' showing zero insight into what life is like for some people

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 07/11/2022 13:33

Can you link to a thread where people are saying this?

TabithaTittlemouse · 07/11/2022 13:33

It doesn’t really highlight the rich getting richer though, it demonstrates that many live within their means?

Normal is different for everyone

transformandriseup · 07/11/2022 13:34

There is a broad range on Mumsnet you don't meet everyday in real life but I have learned that even people on high salaries can be struggling financially.

The pension threads are still an eye opener and I think this is where those with more money and those who don't are going to be pushed further apart in the future. Most people I know are only paying the minimum percentage into a pension and their employers too where lots on here have employers paying in 4/5 that.

3peassuit · 07/11/2022 13:37

There have been lots of threads started by people who state they are only just getting by. The organic grass fed chicken eaters are in the minority these days.

arethereanyleftatall · 07/11/2022 13:38

Eh? How does that demonstrate anything? Strange post. Yes, people have different lives and incomes.

AriettyHomily · 07/11/2022 13:43

People earn wildly different salaries. I don't understand what's so hard to accept about that. If people aren't massively struggling are they not allowed an opinion? It's not a race to the fucking bottom.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 07/11/2022 13:45

I actually don't believe you that there are people on here saying "Omg people would eat chicken from a supermarket".

Ted27 · 07/11/2022 13:46

If you are picking up from the 18th birthday thread, I'm probably one of the higher spenders on that thread.
I'm a very ordinary single parent, I only have one child, I'd saved for his birthday and I have no mortgage. I could afford to splash out a bit on his birthday.
I don't buy my chicken from a supermarket though- I go to the local butchers - it's costs more but I don't buy it often.
People choose to spend their money in different ways

LaLaLouella · 07/11/2022 13:48

I think it's the opposite, Mumsnet now seems to have far more posts from people struggling than those on comfortable incomes.

I think you see in posts what you want to see... just because someone has money, it doesn't mean they don't have problems or live in the real world.

Often the first response to a problem is 'can you afford it' - when it's something as inexpensive as an extra child staying for dinner or being a fiver down on something. Lots of people don't worry about money to this level.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 07/11/2022 13:45

I've never seen that extreme either but there are still people suggesting off-hand spa days (and I'm presuming they mean naiiiice ones in a country club with several treatments rather than a Groupon deal costing thirty quid) or getting a cleaner to people who are struggling to feed their children or heat their homes so there is a certain degree of complete obliviousness to how the other half live....

acornsarenottheonlyfruit · 07/11/2022 13:50

Ive never come across that? But I guess you are right in that in life some people have a lot of money and some people don't, so obviously different people have different lifestyles.

Getting a car and 1000 for 18th is something that several friends have done and they have 'normal' jobs, Binman, care worker, Supermarket shift leader etc.

MegGriffinshat · 07/11/2022 13:50

Well I’ve got jack shit. My sons 18th birthday present was a couple of jackets and a pair of trainers from Primark, and that almost finished us off that month.

Of course, I could have come on to say that I bought him a brand new car and paid for a year long, round the world backpacking trip, which is what I would have done in my fantasy world.

People on the internet make up bollocks to make themselves feel better.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 07/11/2022 13:51

latetothefisting true, I've definitely seen those in the past. Haven't seen a 'spa day' recently though, I suspect the pile-on would be epic Grin

It’s the amount of private schooling on here that I find mind boggling

arethereanyleftatall · 07/11/2022 13:52

But @latetothefisting - IF the op hasn't posted their financial situation, and that is what the responder would do in said situation, why can't they say it? The op is then perfectly at liberty to respond with more information 'thank you but can't afford that.'

eurochick · 07/11/2022 13:52

Well yes. Income disparity is increasing. That can be demonstrated. A quick google led me to this report but there are others:

Meagainalready · 07/11/2022 13:52

I see way more posts on here from people asking for budgeting tips.
The majority of posts where wealth is mentioned are clearly middle income type level.
I don’t think I’ve ever really seen a post where someone is saying insane things about their own wealth- more likely to be a snidey comment about the wealth/spending habits of others…….rather like this one……

ethelredonagoodday · 07/11/2022 13:59

I think there's a huge mix of people on here, from the seemingly supremely wealthy to those really struggling to make ends meet.

Some of the posts are absolutely bonkers, but in general I ignore those, and focus on the mainly good advice, debate, and funny stuff on here.
