Honestly I've never seen poverty like I read about on Mumsnet all the time, not that I'm rich myself but I feel it after reading some of the money threads here. There was one recently enough where a poster got crucified for humble bragging after complaining she only had a few hundred left after bills at the end of the month.

ApolloandDaphne · 07/11/2022 14:10

I am seeing far more posts about people asking for budgeting tips or how to keep their homes warm than I am people boasting about having loads of money.
That said, if someone was looking to spend a bit of money on a birthday or some such treat I would have no issue with it and would make suggestions. I know we are not struggling for money at the moment, but I wouldn't rub it in someones face. However I am happy to make suggestions where they are asked for.

All human life is here iykwim. We’re comfortable, but I had 1 child at 40. If id had 4 in my 20’s, I wouldn’t be. I don’t buy supermarket chicken either - so what? 🤷🏻‍♀️

LBFseBrom · 07/11/2022 14:23

I haven't particularly noticed it. There is a good mix on here and in real life there will always be a disparity in incomes. However people are people and everyone will experience stressful times.

Followtheyellowsicktoad · 07/11/2022 14:25

As a complete aside from the point of this post, I don’t think there’s such a thing as grass fed chicken. Chooks are omnivores and need a bit more to eat than grass - bit of grain, few leftovers, blood of your enemies, they enjoy all sorts.

peaceandove · 07/11/2022 14:43

It's a truism that 'Nothing makes more money than money.' We've only recently got into some amateur property developing. We bought a run down house, renovated it and flipped it - we made £65K clear profit. That £65K allowed us to buy another doer-upper for cash, renovated it and it's now worth £90K more than we paid for it + we rent it out for £1K per month. We're now in the process of buying a doer-upper in Italy, and on and on it goes.

@Followtheyellowsicktoad yes I think the OP meant corn-fed! It makes them look a bit jaundiced imvho…

GoodnightGentleBoris · 07/11/2022 14:56

I always think there is more of a representation of lower income people on here. Lots of shift workers, public service workers etc

frozendaisy · 07/11/2022 14:58

Might help if you define "normal" OP?

I absolutely agree with this!
There is EVERYONE on here, as they are well entitled to be.
So that will include richest, poorest, and everything in between.
It's actually the beauty of the site - you can get opinions from all demographics, rather than just your own 'normal' bubble.

People’s incomes and lifestyles vary hugely. A five minute walk from one end of my street to the other takes me from a council-owned block where I’d imagine many are struggling, to side streets of semi-detached houses worth upwards of a million. That MN threads might also reflect this sort of difference isn’t surprising to me.

Beingastatistic · 07/11/2022 16:21

There are a wide range of incomes on MN of course it’s all to be taken with a pinch of salt. I have never gone in to great detail about my income but I did NC to write how much I had in savings on a thread a few months ago.

Goldenbear · 07/11/2022 16:44

I don't think people are lying, there are quite a few people in the UK that are wealthy from inherited wealth. People just don't get outraged about it at ballot box anymore.

Shitfather · 07/11/2022 16:59

OP - your post isn’t very well thought out, I’m afraid. MN represents people of all income levels. Why shouldn’t the wealthy talk about their lifestyles? You sound quite bitter about your own situation, sadly. Plenty of people won’t be affected by the current situation (including myself). Reading about the struggles of people has been an eye-opener for me, and has made me reassess my my own spending (even though I don’t need to). I won’t apologise for my background, but neither will I be rubbing it in anyone’s face.

superdupernova · 07/11/2022 17:04

I think you're more likely to interact with people far wealthier than you online. I have a couple of very wealthy friends in real life who I met when I worked in a city as a PA years ago but day to day, I don't run in those sorts of circles anymore. Still, I know they exist and are just as likely to use Mumsnet as I am. Pretty much any question you ask google will include a Mumsnet post in the results.

So by "lower" you mean "average" income?

£31,285 is the median full time wage in the uk. Nearly all police officers, teachers, nurses etc will be on more than this unless they are very new - all public sector, shift workers.

This encapsulates the problem with mn - all the threads asking "what do you think a good income is?" and posters replying "well 50-70k is average so over £100k although that wouldn't go far by me!"

And that in turn explains all the differing opinions on anything from the col crisis to state/private schooling or going on a spa day - because the 10% honestly think they are average, and an average wage is very low, rather than half the population living on less than it.

I was specifically thinking about supermarket workers, cleaners, carers etc

TurquoiseBeach · 08/11/2022 10:49

I haven't come across those threads, but then again I eat supermarket chicken!
