Best European city break with teenagers?

Hopalongnancy · 06/11/2022 22:08

Looking for suggestions for a city break next summer with 2 older teenagers.
Not Paris or Barcelona (been there)

We like history, cathedrals and water!

Wanted to do say 3 nights?

DD visited Berlin with us when she was 16 and has visited many European cities and returned to Berlin, which is her absolute favourite out of all of them.

We were to Budapest and that stands out to me, beautiful architecture, different atmosphere in Bupa and Pest.

lovely balcony and delicious places to eat at the end of the road. Only downside is that it's a loft and the rooms are in a massive wooden box so looks lovely but noise travels !

We are very lucky living in Europe so many amazing cities to visit relatively close. Friends that live in Canada green with envy

How about Vienna. There a public swimming area in the Danube which is z bit different.

TheaBrandt · 07/11/2022 11:52

We’ve done a lot of city breaks as we house swap and Vienna was far and away the dullest city for teens. There is no vibe there! Berlin and Rome were much livelier. Or Amsterdam though not if your teen has wild tendencies.

We're just back from short break in Berlin with DS (17) and absolutely loved it. There's masses to do - we barely scratched the surface in 3 days - and it's a very easy city to get around on public transport. Our favourite thing was a city tour with Berlin on Bike though. It's a flat, bike friendly city and we had a brilliant guide who gave us a lot of insight into the history of the city. I'd definitely like to go back as there's so much we couldn't fit in.

Totally agree with others. My top 2 European cities which also match your requirements definitely Berlin & Budapest! I think the latter edges it for beauty and water. No matter what time of year you go there are the thermal baths which are stunning. Like bathing IN a cathedral!

Absolutely. It's sometimes easy to forget, but you're right.

Budapest is great, added bonus is it's a little cheaper than the euro zone countries

Palma?

Great Cathedral and beach! Plus lovely shops/restaurants and museums.

Just done Athens with teen boys - it was brilliant - tons of history, great bars and restaurants with heated outdoor spaces, lots of beautiful views, some cool graffiti art.

@WanttoFindWorkLifeBalance were you there in winter? How cold was it?
Tail hopping this thread, keep the suggestions coming for the Halloween half term!

We were there end of October in half term - weather was beautiful - mid/late 20s in the day, late teens/early 20s in the eve. We ate outside every eve, in the later eves the restaurants put heaters on if needed. Can't say if it's always like that though!
