How much can you reasonably afford? How much do you usually give them? No one can tell you what’s a reasonable amount. £100? £1k? A £5 mil Ferrari?

cruellabraverman · 06/11/2022 22:16

Depends upon a household budget surely, not sure there would be a normal.

We put away money monthly since birth and they recieved it on their 18th.

19th and subsequent went back to a normal amount

pyjamafashionista · 06/11/2022 22:25

I'd say for a special Birthday such as 18th around £500 if affordable.

drkpl · 06/11/2022 22:27

@pyjamafashionista £500!!!?

@pyjamafashionista £500!!!?

We gave ours £1000. Its completely relative though isn't it. To some that might be way too much, to others they may give £5000. DH and I both work and have paid off our mortgage so we're happy to give £1000, but others may think that's too much. It's a personal decision based on what someone can afford.

Kendodd · 06/11/2022 22:31

Am I the only one who thinks it should just be an ordinary birthday?

Ted27 · 06/11/2022 22:35

My son was 18 this year, I didnt give him money, he had a PS5 which he waited a long time for.
We also had a helicopter trip whilst we were on holiday

DrMadelineMaxwell · 06/11/2022 22:38

We didn't give money. We bought a few small gifts as they'd have for any other birthday, then they had the choice: birthday party or a holiday?

DD1 isn't a very sociably outgoing person and didn't like going out so opted for an Athens trip due to her love of ancient history.
DD2 is more sociable, but the eldest in her year (so no fun having an 18th if you are the only one who can legally drink!) so she's just had her trip away with me. Her criteria - somewhere she could sit by a pool.

dementedpixie · 06/11/2022 22:39

I didn't give money as dd doesn't spend the money she already has. I gave her some presents, a balloon arrangement, made her a cake and we went out for dinner as a family.

£500-£1k sounds crazy to me

Lattedream · 06/11/2022 22:40

£500 and went out for a nice meal as a family

2pinkginsplease · 06/11/2022 22:40

Both mine got £500 for their 18ths.

2pinkginsplease · 06/11/2022 22:41

My mum paid for me to go to Florida for my 18th which was 28years ago.

sneezums · 06/11/2022 22:52

We bought all of ours a small car( £2k max) when they passed their tests - all around their 18th birthdays - had a big family meal and smaller present on the day.

Giving mine 1k.
Plus presents costing around £250 and a party at home.
She's my only child x

Yes!

chocolateandtea123 · 06/11/2022 23:03

All dependent on what you can afford.
I would give a few hundred pounds most likely

FirstnameSuesecondnamePerb · 06/11/2022 23:07

Dd1 got a macbook, dd2 a car. Both relatively the same value. Dd3 I expect will have a car as well.

McConkeysPlate · 06/11/2022 23:10

My DD is getting a pair of pyjamas and some tinned cocktails.

ThatsRoughBuddy · 06/11/2022 23:16

Mines 18 next week and getting £200 and a few presents to open.

EddieHowesBlackandWhiteArmy · 06/11/2022 23:18

We got her a private reg and some eye wateringly expensive but delicious smelling Tom Ford.

caringcarer · 06/11/2022 23:21

I have all of mine £1000 each or equal value. Second child got £1060. In Youngest actually got an extra £253 because that was apparently the value of £1000 when his eldest sibling was 18. You get is 10 years younger than eldest. Whatever you give make sure you can treat all children the same.

healthadvice123 · 06/11/2022 23:31

We spent about £150 and a small garden party as all we could afford
Ds was grateful though
