Just gave nephew £180 for his

mileaminute · 07/11/2022 08:41

It's no wonder you are in a less financial position spending that amount on a birthday.

Wow. You have no idea why our financial position has changed. It's certainly nothing to do with spending a couple of grand on a birthday.

DS1 got a MacBook. It was during lockdown so no big family meal or party.
Well off PIL gave him £30 which just shows how much importance people place on these milestone birthdays can vary.

I’m not that poster but we’re at similar levels of spending and it can feel like we’re really not generous when you look at the amounts other spend.
Interestingly though, we’re pretty much the only posters who mentioned how our offspring felt about it.

The OP didn’t ask how they felt, she asked what we gave them.

I can assure you my children are very thankful for all they have.

A car which we are budgeting 4-5k on. Then a family meal out as he doesn’t want a party, and will separately just go out with friends to celebrate which we will give him £100 for. Plus a nice watch to open on the day itself as it’s a tradition in DH’s family.

Well I have said 300 pounds- that's really the upper limit. Just peed off as she's started playing her face well just wondered if I could also have.....

God, this is so subjective.

DD2 turned 18 this year. Her main present from us was a 5 day luxury holiday in Mykonos with her boyfriend - and a vintage Tiffany necklace. On her birthday weekend we took her and DD1 (and their boyfriends) away for a 2 night stay at a smart London hotel with a spa. Her birthday lunch was at The Ivy, Asia - and later we paid for the teens to go to a cocktail/foam/roller disco type event.

So God knows how much it all cost? But this simply wouldn't have been financially possible even just 3 years ago.

Did you feel like that was a dig, it wasn’t, it was reassurance to anyone feeling like they can’t spend hundreds or thousands that the kids who get less are just as grateful and that we felt that we had to make the point that it was ok. I would hope that kids who get given more were too. I had kind of assumed they were.

Mine got £500 about 8 years ago. Plus some small gifts and a party. They got nothing special for their 21st as that's just a birthday

That sounds AMAZING!

I got my dd a Tiffany necklace for her 16th...she lost it two weeks later. 😳

Yes, they had a blast. We also bought DD1 a Tiffany necklace for her 18th but I haven't seen her in it for a long while........ Hmm.

My DD is getting a pair of pyjamas and some tinned cocktails.

I misread that as a tin of fruit cocktail!

Haha
my one about to turn 18 would prefer that as he loves tinned fruit (particularly pineapple) and doesn’t drink. He gets a pineapple in his stocking.

Ours got cars and a meal out. We chose to live very rurally and felt it only fair they had a car to be independent.
