Employee liking explicit material

Name changed for this one!

I have a guy on my team who has a history of questionable behaviour. He's been rude to people, failed to show up to work on occasions when we know he's been out drinking, poor performance - nothing that amounts to gross misconduct but enough for some red flags. I think he's on the radar of people above him.

It's been raised that he's been 'liking' very explicit porn on his public (but personal) social media profile. His profile isn't linked to the company but his photo and real name are on it.

I don't know if this is serious enough to escalate. The person who told me is upset about it.

Should I raise this or let it go?

That’s his business not yours unless it’s some kind of safeguarding issue pertaining to his job.

silverclock222 · 06/11/2022 16:01

None of your business.

LeMoo · 06/11/2022 16:02

The person who told me is upset about it.

Why? What's it got to do with them?

Whether you flag this further up at work depends on company policy about social media use etc. Have a chat with HR

Stichintime · 06/11/2022 16:02

Depends on the role I would have thought.

CoastalWave · 06/11/2022 16:03

I think it should be reported.

Wasn't the guy who killed Sarah Everead watching and sharing dodgy stuff?

If it's clearly him, then he's bringing the company into disrepute (potentially)

Istheworldreallydonefor · 06/11/2022 16:04

@SilverSquare

most contracts have clauses that mean you can’t bring disrepute to the company.

depending on the country the content might be illegal too so that would be another issue.

the people who say it’s none of your business or it’s personal don’t really understand

talk to HR

KILM · 06/11/2022 16:05

Depends what your works social media policy says if you raise it or not - liking stuff is an interesting grey area as its generally not covered in social media policy as they arent actually sharing stuff.

Ekátn · 06/11/2022 16:08

That’s a difficult one.

Is there a social media policy that includes liking certain posts?

I get ops point about Sarah Everead murderer. But that’s not HRs domain. HR won’t react to something not against policy, because a murdered also did something similar before becoming a murderer.

How does the person who reported it know what he is liking? They must also be viewing it? So if viewing and liking is against company policy, wouldn’t they be also breaking the policy.

Theres a huge difference between liking a post (not matter how distasteful) and creating the actual content.

BagOfBollocks · 06/11/2022 16:10

Well if they're that upset about it, they'll raise it themselves assuming they're an adult?

BobbyBobbyBobby · 06/11/2022 16:11

Isn’t all porn ‘explicit’? I mean, that’s the whole point of it?!

Is it the usual kind of porn with a woman taking it up the bum by three different men or does your ‘explicit’ mean there is a donkey or other creature involved?

Mylittlesandwich · 06/11/2022 16:12

Honestly, there's a lot of explicit material on twitter. My employers social media agreement mentions nothing about this. If you're does then raise it. If it doesn't then there's nothing to raise. It's not something I'd worry myself about.

Looneytune253 · 06/11/2022 16:12

As long as the porn he's liking is legal it's really no one else's business. Literally. Not yours, not the person that's reported it, not HR. Nothing at all to do with his job. Jeez

girlmom21 · 06/11/2022 16:15

What kind of porn is readily available on social media?

Tell the person who reported him to just delete him from their social media. How do they even know what he's liking?

SilverSquare · 06/11/2022 16:21

His profile is public and I think he popped up in the "because you follow abc you might like to follow xyz" sort of thing. They looked at his profile and saw things he'd commented on and liked.

Part of me agrees with the opinion that it's no one's business - that's true. But then part of me wonders about damage to our reputation.

Thanks for everyone's advice. I think I'm going to leave it. Like someone said - the person who found it can raise it if they want to.

How does the person know what he looked at if she didnt also look at it?

I think that’s the best way to handle it.

If you wanted to be kind to the chap you could suggest to him that he changed his profile to private.

Thelnebriati · 06/11/2022 16:25

There are so many of these types of post, maybe employers should check they have explicit clauses in their contracts.

WhatTheHellIsAQuasar · 06/11/2022 16:25

Is this some sort of weird throwback to the only fans thread from earlier…

But porn isn’t available like that on social media.

Thelnebriati · 06/11/2022 16:27

It is, you probably have to go looking for it a bit but its definitely there.

It really is. There’s a lot of stuff on Twitter.

forevercooking · 06/11/2022 17:21

Are these types of threads going to be a daily occurrence now?

Explicit porn? That is then recommended to people who follow you?

Sadly yes.

Whataretheodds · 06/11/2022 17:45

It is potentially relevant - does he use the same phone number /email address for work (customers, colleagues, suppliers) as he does to log in to social media? Is he on linkedin?

If so then his SM profile could very well be suggested to clients/colleagues/suppliers.
