Bday party with no sarnies?

Party tomorrow and just thought I can probably get away with no sarnies?

5 year olds. Party is 2-4pm. Party lunchbox with pombears, mini choc fingers and juice box, plus the party favour and a cupcake to choose on the way out.

Does this seem measley? Purposefully chose that time slot tbh to avoid doing a full meal.

Want to avoid as much waste as poss - have borrowed proper cups, all paper decorations etc. I have bought the stuff for sandwiches but we’ll easily use it up through the week. Just hate the thought of platters of rejected sarnies!

Tbh I’d probably assume you’d forgotten to put the sandwich in the box. Stick a sarnie in there.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 05/11/2022 12:35

5 year olds have no interest in sandwiches.

I’d get a bag of frozen sausage rolls and a bag of nuggets.

MassiveSalad22 · 05/11/2022 12:35

God sorry massive overuse of the word sarnies there 😂 I would never say that out loud haha!

How about adding breadsticks and cheese cubes?

Crossback · 05/11/2022 12:35

Just do them half a sandwich each

sheepandcaravan · 05/11/2022 12:36

Mine wouldn't want a sandwich 2 to 4. Sounds plenty to me

OnTheRunWithMannyMontana · 05/11/2022 12:36

I would be doing little triangle sandwiches, a plate of ham, jam and cheese.

Sorry but it does sound a bit measly.

See I would do this and even thought of putting a filling request on the invite 😄 but say there’s 20 children, I would feel the need to do 20 half-sandwiches of each because I don’t know which filling everyone would pick.

Sausage rolls/veggie equivalent might be better than sandwiches.
Little pizza slices. Things like popcorn chicken.
These always seem to be eaten more than sandwiches.

Suedomin · 05/11/2022 12:37

Could you ask the parent what type of sandwich their child would prefer? From a choice of what you have. Then put one in each party box? That would avoid making platters if sandwiches and avoid waste

Smileandtheworldsmileswithyou · 05/11/2022 12:37

That’s not very much food, I would make them something else as they might be hungry.

Ok that was the exact original plan until 10 mins ago 😄 might just stick to it. Really don’t like the beige party buffet offerings I’m afraid #snob

Why not cook a few veggie pizzas to be safe and cut those up??

Herecomeschristmas · 05/11/2022 12:41

Mine never touch the sensible food (definitely didn't at 5) and they will have had lunch so I would say it's fine. They'll be done in a few minutes though.

Herecomeschristmas · 05/11/2022 12:42

Actually to please parents you might want to stick to your original plan!

ancientgran · 05/11/2022 12:44

I remember one of my kids going to a party with no sandwiches. Didn't worry me as she wouldn't have eaten it anyway but I was shocked at how outraged the other mothers were, it was like a big scandal at playgroup for a few days.

FirstnameSuesecondnamePerb · 05/11/2022 12:45

I always say, do half the sandwiches you think and double the number of cocktail sausages.

Herecomeschristmas · 05/11/2022 12:51

it was like a big scandal at playgroup for a few days. 😀

The food bit at parties at that age is always a bit joyless with each parent hovering behind their child. I don't know how the kids manage to enjoy it.

MassiveSalad22 · 05/11/2022 12:56

I was at a party the other day with this awful dad who told his daughter ‘SANDWICH FIRST or no one will get any cake’ 😲 and he looked around at all the other parents like he was a shining example…. I said to my son ‘don’t worry, that’s not true’ 😂

Maybe he is struggling with money so wanted to make sure she had something filling to eat first.

OnTheRunWithMannyMontana · 05/11/2022 13:01

Stick to the original plan then I say! When mine were that age I would probably have just given a snack at lunchtime thinking they would be getting sandwiches at the 2pm party.

We used this, but with crisps instead of cocktail sausages.

I think with just pombears and choc fingers to eat for the "party tea" you might have some asking where the rest of the food is! I would add something else personally. You don't know how much lunch they've had. Apart from anything else it'll keep them busy a bit longer.

Novemberrain1111 · 05/11/2022 13:08

I think it's fine for the time slot, but maybe let the parents know in advance that there won't be a full on party meal as some may skip their child's lunch thinking there will be a big spread of sandwiches etc.

Crimsonripple · 05/11/2022 13:10

Children that age want party food. Pizza, little sausages, sausage rolls, crisps, cheese etc. Party lunchbox sounds a lot of effort.
