Bday party with no sarnies?

MassiveSalad22 · 05/11/2022 12:33

Party tomorrow and just thought I can probably get away with no sarnies?

5 year olds. Party is 2-4pm. Party lunchbox with pombears, mini choc fingers and juice box, plus the party favour and a cupcake to choose on the way out.

Does this seem measley? Purposefully chose that time slot tbh to avoid doing a full meal.

Want to avoid as much waste as poss - have borrowed proper cups, all paper decorations etc. I have bought the stuff for sandwiches but we’ll easily use it up through the week. Just hate the thought of platters of rejected sarnies!

It's fine to do something instead of sarnies but if you gave my kids crisps, chocolate fingers and juice only I'd not be impressed 🤷

OhIdoLike2bBesideTheSeaside · 05/11/2022 14:38

I mean if you can't face making sandwiches you could order pizza in for the party??

isladeltesoro · 05/11/2022 14:39

Cover your bases and put a box of crackers and some babybels on a plate for them to choose from when they collect their lunchboxes.

Most of the kids probably won't take them but it keeps the parents happy and you're only wasting the box of crackers as the babybels can go back home with you.

You could just pop a brioche or similar in, with or without chocolate chips.

isladeltesoro · 05/11/2022 14:40

I'd stick some fruit in the lunchbox as well. Maybe an easy peeler.

Undertheoldlindentree · 05/11/2022 14:42

I'd definitely expect something savoury. Seems a bit demeaning to just offer highly processed crisps and cake. I'm not being precious, my DC had plenty of this stuff growing up, just not only that in one meal.

I'd do a plate of various sandwich quarters, carrot, cucumber and pepper crudités, mini sausage or rolls or cheese straws. If you can't be bothered with platters, just stick each in a big tupperware box, next to a stack of paper plates and get the parents to select for them. But really, the passing round of stuff and choosing their own is all part of the party fun!🤔

MassiveSalad22 · 05/11/2022 14:44

But it’s not a meal 😵‍💫

I’m just gonna yell ‘SNACK TIME!’ when the time comes 😄

I think I’d add some chicken nuggets.

@MassiveSalad22
I mean yeah it does sound Measely
Making sandwiches is no great shakes is it really.
Just do the Pom bears and treat and drink but it does need padding out

Dairy lea dunkers/ lunchables
Cook some pizzas
Make some sandwiches
Mini sausages
Sausage rolls
Cubes of cheese
Veggie sticks maybe??

But yeah that would be preety pathetic on its own my kids would be starving

We went to a party 1-3 a while back and they did NO FOOD
The kids were all starving it was in a social club room so I went round to the bar and ordered chips, nuggets and beans for my 3 kids and brought it round it was horrendous

I cant believe you were so rude to do that Shock

Surely your kids would have survived till they got home!

MuggleMe · 05/11/2022 15:01

I think clarifying on the invite next time that snacks will be provided and doing a buffet, but by doing a box each, there's an expectation. I did quarter cheese and quarter ham in your situation just to pacify.

Please make sure you are in a corner standing on a chair.

It is extremely frightening to be amongst 20 5yr olds high on sugar hunting for more sugary snacks.

I don't want your next thread to be from A &E 😧

mathanxiety · 05/11/2022 15:50

Sausage rolls are a better idea.

I think it's a better idea to have a party around a normal mealtime. That way you can serve pizza and less of the fiddly little extras. Either start with the food or end with it. Cake and candles last thing either way.

Denny53 · 05/11/2022 15:53

Go to Asda and buy a couple of kids sandwich platters. There about £4 each!

God I still have flashbacks from the piñata. It was like 28days later. I was absolutely mauled by sugar-crazed four year olds

I always say, do half the sandwiches you think and double the number of cocktail sausages.

This.

Winterfires · 05/11/2022 17:49

I would’ve fed my 5 year old lunch before two so wouldn’t worry about a sandwich

Winterfires · 05/11/2022 17:51

I watched a documentary once where they gave party going kids sugary snacks but sedate activities and the other healthy snacks but hyper activities and the sugar kids were calm but the hyped up activity kids were off the charts crazy so make of that what you will.

AdInfinitum12 · 05/11/2022 18:03

Are some people missing that this party is between meal times? Surely kids will have eaten lunch by 2pm and won't be having an evening meal before 4pm? OP is fine to provide a snack.. why do you need pizza, sandwiches, sausages rolls when you're just providing small snacks?

diddl · 05/11/2022 18:18

RFPO77 · 05/11/2022 14:35

It's only for 2rs.2-4.

Wouldn't your kids be eating before & after?

LolaSmiles · 05/11/2022 18:25

For any children's part I tend to assume there will be a light party tea, so I'd not give a full lunch if we were going to a 2pm party

I think there needs to be a savoury offer, even if it isn't sandwiches. The poster who suggested mini pizzas and sausage rolls had a good idea.

I'm a lazy parent though so the idea of a party lunchbox is a lot of work to me.

BeautifulDragon · 05/11/2022 18:26

I think for most people party=food 🤷🏽‍♀️

I would have given mine a light lunch and assumed they would be eating at the party... because it's a party!

I'd be embarrassed to just give and crisps and biscuits.

IDidntKnowItWasAParty · 05/11/2022 18:38

Definitely have sandwiches, even just jam sandwiches - or SOMETHING, it may not get eaten but you need to have at least offered

Comedycook · 05/11/2022 18:58

Party lunchbox with pombears, mini choc fingers and juice box, plus the party favour and a cupcake to choose on the way out

Honestly, I'd be seriously unimpressed if this is what my dc was given at a party. I'm pretty lax about food but this is pure snacky junk. I'd cut up some carrots and cucumber or Chuck in a babybel...that plus even a quarter of a sandwich would be better. Why so keen to undercater?!

Because she's trying to reduce food waste? Realistically as a snack (not a meal) these children will leave the sandwiches, cheese and veg in favour of the chocolate fingers, cake and crisps.

But the party is only a couple of hours & between mealtimes.

Why should it be more than a snack?

I can't believe how many would rely on a meal being given.
